The first time we hear from him for months and hes being extremely vulnerable; opening up about depression and creative block, especially regarding TWOW and all some people have to say is “well then get on writing.” Or “maybe instead of hating on HOTD you should be working on TWOW and get therapy.”

The last thing a depressed person needs is judgement from others on their behavior, ESPECIALLY when they are being so vulnerable to so many people. These remarks are so condescending because who knows if he HAS been getting professional help??? Talking to lawyers about protecting his creative work from being misinterpreted???? This poor man is talking about dealing with grief from losing people around him and having his passion of 30 years being misinterpreted and THAT was all people had to say…

I’ve dealt with periods of extreme depression before and there is truth to the statement that a lot of depressed people think irrationally because their whole bodily and brain chemistry is off balance. So what makes people think GRRM will be completely cool headed?

Shit if I had my work i poured so much love and care into for 3 whole decades bastardized by adaptation show runners and essentially lose creative control on how most people will interpret my works, id be depressed as fuck too.

Im not saying all changes on HOTD or GOT were bad. Some were actually beneficial. In fact, changes in adaptations can bring positive outcomes (AKOTSK is a PRIME example). But so many of HOTD and GOT changes were essentially HUGE mischaracterizations of everything. As the author of the material the adaptations are based on, depressed or not, GRRM absolutely has every right to voice opinions on them.

I’ve also seen people use the “depressed people don’t think rationally” argument to discredit his criticism of GOT and HOTD and not take him seriously but the most recent episode of HOTD and the GOT ending is literally proof of the validity in his outrage.

I think alot of times we forget that the fiction we enjoy are not made by fictitious beings. There are real people behind the stories we enjoy and it’s important to show some grace to them.

As Constance Wu once said, “I think it's important that we engage in curiosity and empathy before we go straight to judgment. Because if somebody does something out of character for them, usually it means something's going on in their life."
