Name Reources
So, you’re writing a thing, and you need to name a character. And, as we all know, naming a character is a giant pain in the ass. I offer this list of shit I use pretty regularly, for this purpose.
Behind the Name (The etymologies are weird as fuck, in a few places, but it’s great if you’ve got a name and need to find other names that are from or derived from the same culture/language)
Behind the Surname (BTN for family names)
Academy of Saint Gabriel Medieval Names Archive (This is the go-to for medieval names in Europe and the Near East. Hardcore scholarship and a distinct lack of fucking around.)
Kate Monk’s Onomastikon (The original internet name resource.)
The Soldier in Later Medieval England (Actual names from English military rolls around the Battle of Agincourt)
England’s Immigrants (Non-native residents of England, 1330-1550)
Celtic Personal Names of Roman Britain
Mapping the Medieval Countryside - People (People appearing in English inquisitions post mortem, 1418-1447)
Wiktionary’s Index of Biblical Names
Ancient Names Galleria (The weird shit is here. If you need Akkadian or Phoenecian names, those are totally covered.)
Trismegistos People (Names extracted from the Trismegistos Texts – mostly names from Graeco-Roman Egypt.)
Personally, I use the shit out of Trismegistos People, England’s Immigrants, and the Ancient Names Galleria. If you’ve got good sources I didn’t hit, feel free to add them in a reblog. I’m always looking for more good name resources. (And almost all of what I have is Europe and the Near East, with a little North Africa.)
Dropping this update in the most recent reblog in my notes, in the hopes it falls into as many laps as possible. Here’s some more good sources for names, this time with a more African focus.
Wikipedia Category: Surnames of African Origin (which is helpfully divided into sections by language)
Wikipedia Category: Amharic Language Names (I believe this list is primarily, if not entirely, given names.)
YorubaName (“an online intervention to preserve and document all Yorùbá names in a multimedia format.”)
Writing Adolescent Fiction: Character names: Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan (a list of given names and surnames with notes on how full names are constructed in each culture listed)
Again, if you know any good sources, particularly for regions I haven’t covered, let me know!
Rebageling with some more good shit:
So You Want to Name a Sino (a fairly detailed guide on how to name a Chinese character without sounding like too much of a moron)
Most Popular Baby Names for Girls Since 1960 (most popular American girls’ names, by state, from 1960-2012, as a gif)
Popular Baby Names (the US Social Security database of naming trends in the US, with search options for date, gender, location, and trend)
A Guide to Names and Naming Practises (a UK government guide to common names and structure of names from around the world, split first by continent and then by culture. PDF.)
Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature (an entire book on trends in English naming and name structure and the Puritan influence, from 1880. PDF.)
Things I am particularly looking for reliable sources for, if you’ve got them: North and South American aboriginal names, Southeast and East Asian names, names from the former USSR, Australian aboriginal names. (All of these by culture or language family, if possible, not just by current national borders.)
Finally back to drawing after months with what I think might be my favourite piece I've created to date
This piece came into existence thanks to the 1789 Fandom, when @margridarnauds shared an AU headcanon that my beloved girl Charlotte was Lazare's half sister, and the idea grew from there.
I could talk for hours about how much I already love this AU-
for every "🌹" received in my inbox i'll post one random sentence of a random WIP i'm currently writing
fanfic speedrun: write the scene you want to write and skip the rest of the fic
(same goes on the reader side of things)
I'm seeing people on this post who think that what I'm saying is, "Write out of order, starting with the things you enjoy most." And while that's fine advice, it's not actually what I said.
What I said was, "Only write the thing that's fun, and don't write the rest."
Write one shots. Write drabbles. Write ficlets. If you have 5 interesting scenes but you can't figure out how to tie them together into a fic, then write 5 separate ficlets, post them in a series, and when you get another idea for that series just plop it right in there and rearrange the works into the right order.
You don't have to write longfic to write fanfic.
I love one shots. One shots are awesome. One shots don't fuck around. One shots are a hit of pure, distilled fandom straight into the veins. They know what they're here to accomplish and by God they accomplish it with as little extraneous bullshit as possible. Sometimes you don't want a 30 chapter slow-burn epic five course meal; it too much. Sometimes you just want to down a double-expresso one shot of your favorite character and ride that high for the rest of the afternoon.
If you have 5 interesting scenes but you can't figure out how to tie them together into a fic
I would like to reintroduce you to ye olde fanfic classic “Five times [whatever]” with bonus variant “Five Times [whatever] and One Time [whatever adjacent]”
let’s say we want to write Destiel pining. Great “Five Times Dean Didn’t Say I Love You (and One Time Cas Died Did)”
You don’t need filler, you don’t need connective tissue, “[number] times [thing i want to write about]” is a perfect framing device for just hitting the highlights

Plot Bunnies, Plot Chickens, Etc.
As a lot of people aren’t familiar with plot creatures, I thought I’d shed some light on the members of the mental menagerie…
The Plot Bunny - Story ideas that come bounding in and start multiplying.
The Plot Chicken - They squawk, flap around, and shit everywhere, but when you actually need to do something with them, they scatter.
The Plot Sloth - Takes its sweet goddamned time turning into something useful.
The Plot Mule - When you mash two plots together and get something cool, but you can’t get a sequel out of it to save your life.
The Plot Cat - Lazy little bastards who take up your headspace, scare away all the other plot bunnies, but won’t actually do anything except lay there.
The Plottweiler - Barks loudly and viciously so you can’t ignore it, distracts you from everything else you want to write, but leaves you too paralyzed with fear to actually put words down.
The Plot Squirrel - Cute, distracting, full of nuts, and just TRY to keep up with that train of thought.
The Plot Bedbug - Shows up during the night, chews on you so you can’t sleep, and disappears in the daylight.
The Plot Tick - Burrows in, bleeds you dry, and leaves you with the creepy-crawlies. Mostly preys on horror writers.
The Plotroach - Totally unappealing, but so tenacious they’ll survive anything until you finally give up and write them.
What Plot Creatures have you encountered?
The Plot Dolphin - Either something very intellectually stimulating and probably surreal, or porn without plot, no inbetween.
The Plot Fin Whale - It’s a longfic, but a surprisingly fast-moving one that just flows right out of you.
The Plot Dragon - A gigantic pile of your most treasured tropes that probably don’t go that well when mixed together haphazardly like that but so shiny
The Plot Gryphon - A crossover.
The Plot Chimera - An especially ambitious crossover.
The Plot Hydra - WHERE ARE ALL THESE SUBPLOTS COMING FROM
The Plot Salmon - A love story that ends tragically.
The Plot Peryton - That deathfic you don’t want to write because you like that character and don’t want them to die but its shadow will be cast upon you until you give up and write it.
The Plot Stick Insect - You thought the plot was going to do one thing but SURPRISE! The characters have decided to go in a completely different direction.
To celebrate finishing my final assessment I thought I'd get some damn work done on the next set of custom card concept designs
So here is the Scarlet Pimpernel set!
With Percy as the King, Marguerite as the Queen and Chauvelin as the Jack

Tagging @whereswaldotho and @chaoticbitheatrekid because guess who's proud of their artwork for once
So I'm a week away from finishing high school and my brain just started yelling at me to make Frank Wildhorn musical inspired playing card designs??????
AND I DID??????
Pic 1: all four designs
2: Jekyll and Hyde
3: The Scarlet Pimpernel
4: The Count of Monte Cristo
5: Dracula
[I will also be creating king, queen and jack designs with the characters when I have the time]
[and possibly buying a whole pack of cards specifically to vandalise to make the whole pack]

Holiday/vacation prompts
Suggested by @whereswaldotho, who also created a couple of these
Dialogue prompts
"Just tell me where we're going!" "And ruin the surprise? I think not!"
"I've never been to the beach before..." "Well, what are you waiting for then? Let's go!" (by @whereswaldotho)
"Please don't tell me that you're planning on singing along the whole time we're travelling..."
"Why are you wearing your t-shirt over your bathing suit?" "Why not?" (@whereswaldotho again)
"Aren't you holding the map upside down?" "Of course I'm not! ....Wait. Yes I am-"
Situation prompts
Person A loses the Map. Person B doesn't mind because they're secretly in heaven and being lost with Person A is better than anything in the world (by @whereswaldotho)
Person A books a holiday for Person B because Person B has never been on holiday (also by @whereswaldotho)
Person A has told Person B all about the vacation planned for the two of them. Except for one tiny little secret, of course...
Person A plans a group vacation to get their high school friend group back together
Person A's car breaks down on the way to meet their friends at the beach, so Person B offers them some help
Prompts for when the villain has captured the hero
"I heard you didn't even put up a fight. How very disappointing. I expected much more from you."
"What do you want?" "That's for me to know, and for you to find out."
"Who are you?" "Of course you don't remember. Why should you?"
"I look forward to the sound of your pain."
"How long do you think you can hold out? And I mean truthfully." "A hell of a lot longer than you think."
"Just get it over with." "Oh, I'm not going to kill you. That would be far too easy."
"I can't wait to see the look on your face when I get out of here."
"You're brave, [name]. However, bravery can only get you so far."
"I wish I could tell you that I'm doing this for some deep and meaningful reason. But I'll be honest, it's not the slightest bit true."
"Are you having fun, [name]? Because I'm having lots of fun."
Argument prompts
"It's just that-" "it's just that you don't trust me, right?"
"If you would just listen to me for once in your life, I'd tell you!"
"You haven't cared this far, why start now?"
"If it was anything to do with you, I'd tell you. But it's not. So stay out of it."
"Is that all I was to you?" "You don't understand-" "Just tell me why!"
"Don't you dare try to put this on me!"
"Why didn't you just tell me? I could have helped!"
"So I'm useless, is that it?"
"So it's their word over mine, right? Every fucking time!"
"I trusted you!"
Angsty prompts
"Do you even understand what loyalty is?" "I understand what watching you die is!"
"It's [name]. They're the one who sold us out." "You're lying. It can't be."
"I can't hold on much longer. It hurts."
"Don't you see it?" "I see it. But what I don't see is a place for me."
"That one dream was all I had left. But now it's gone."
"This isn't me, [name]. It never was."
"I feel like I'm losing my mind."
"Just stay. I'll help you-" "I don't think you can anymore."
"I've changed. And I don't know if I want to go back."
"You didn't notice. You never notice."
So I'm thinking about starting to take requests for prompts on my sideblog @insanities-incarnate because I'm much better at writing short prompts than I am at writing full pieces
So if anyone wants to send me a situation or something on there I'll do some short little prompts to help I guess
I'll take suggestions for almost anything except NSFW because that's the one thing I don't feel very comfortable with
Send them in babes I'll do my best
