The story of a marble worker Evrard Flignot from Brussels who devastated by the death of his wife built a pretty mausoleum for her in Cimetière de Laeken.

At first look inside, there is a mourner reaching out to an empty wall. But, once a year, on the day of the summer solstice, the Sun draws a light that recalls this love for almost a century.

Louise Fligot, Léonce Evrard’s wife, died 1916. After her death, beginning of 1917, Evrard bought a perpetual concession of 20 square meters. The crypt wasn’t finished until 1919, the same year that Evrard himself passed away. (He never saw the finished mausoleum, as it was completed 1920.)

Architect George de Larabrie took up the project after the death of Léonce and submitted the plans in March 1920. The sculpture itself is attributed to the Antwerp sculptor Pierre Theunis. The grieving figure nor the heart made of light were on the building plans, so it remains unclear whose idea it was.

(I’m unable to find measurements for the statue and mausoleum (other than 20 square meters) but if anyone can dig those up I’ll add them to this!)
