We really are in a great era of being Nicola fans!
To me itās totally fine to not like a character, it doesnāt equate to disliking the actor or that their performance was bad. There are characters in media that I dislike but that is a testament to the performance by the actor making me feel strongly. It totally makes sense for Penelope to inspire a reaction and for the character to be adored by some and disliked by others. Whilst I am annoyed by how the show ended the LW arc in s4, it overall was a great character for Nicola to get to play.
I personally find the Bridgerton fandom as a whole pretty toxic but donāt care to engage unless itās hate towards Nicola specifically. Iāve always felt that most Polin fans that came from Bridgerton are more fans of Penelope the character than Nicola the actress. They certainly are more passionate about engaging in fan wars over what is said about Penelope or Polin than defending Nicola from those in their fandom who speak badly about Nicola and her loved ones.
Oh I agree. Liking or disliking a fictional character has never been the same as judging the actor behind them. In fact, sometimes the characters that spark the biggest reactions are the ones played the best.
Being a fan of an actor is a different from being a fan of a character. Characters have their stories, but actors keep growing and becoming someone new every project
I am a fan of Nicola, not just one role she played.
itās not that
What is?
lol it makes me wonder about the age or life experience of some people in this fandom. Since when is being a feminist or an independent woman mean you canāt have a partner? Like thatās the end of the argument really. To the previous anon, even if Nicola wanted to take her partner to more events or mention something about him in passing, it wouldnāt undo her accomplishments or her impressive career trajectory or her activism or her friendships.
If we must indulge facile points, the quote these lukolas like to pull out about Nic illustrates the opposite to their narratives. She mentioned no woman is just someoneās girlfriend to say that women have internal lives and ambitions and struggles and shortcomings outside of any relationship.
She was speaking in the context of the types of roles she wanted to play where the female character isnāt just a prize for the male hero to win or save. Of course for an actor, playing the complexity of human emotions is far more interesting to do.
Nicola has always talked about wanting to be seen as a whole person with her own ambitions and identity. Having a loving, supportive partner doesn't take any of that away, it just means she gets to share parts of her life with someone she loves. Those ideas have never contradicted each other.

Thereās a certain group of Penelope fans on twitter who think that Nicola āsoloā fans arenāt real fans because we donāt engage in fan wars or fight with Bridgerton fans who dislike Penelope/Polin. Ironically these same Penelope fans regularly criticize Nicola and her loved ones for her personal life. Us Nicola fans can actually differentiate between someone having an opinion of a fictional character and someone attacking the actual actor. Penelope isnāt real. People are allowed to dislike her. But thatās a huge crime to Polins.
I know exactly who you're talking about. And I think you said it best: Penelope is a character. Nicola is a real person. Those are two very different things.
I've never understood why some people struggle to separate the two.
And yes, people are allowed to love, dislike, or feel completely indifferent to Penelope. That's the nature of fictional characters. None of that changes who Nicola is or the work she's doing now.
Penelope will always be an incredibly important part of Nicola's career, and I'm so grateful for everything that role gave her. But I also think the greatest compliment you can pay an actor is letting them become someone else.
That's literally the job. Nicola isn't meant to stay Penelope forever.
That's why I'm just as excited to meet Helen, Ellie, the girl with the red curls, and every other character she hasn't even introduced us to yet. To me, that's what being a fan of an actor is all about.
https://www.tumblr.com/inneedofanewname/821844180858978304/a-lot-of-these-so-called-fans-need-to-stop
This is so on point. As an example: Lukolaās will accuse Nic of redacting on her independent woman stance because she took Jake to Cannes. They completely missed the point of the previous speech about not just being someoneās girlfriend.
That whole event was focused on her. She posed for photos alone. She did her Q&A without mention of Jake. She did her podium speech to an enormous audience without mention of Jake. She did all of the press without him in focus. He was simply there as her guest. Yet THEY (not the press or wider GA) criticise, and focus on him - which ironically was the purpose and context of her speech! They are the problem.
I think some people have a very narrow idea of what independence looks like.
Independence doesn't mean doing everything alone. You can have your own career, your own voice, your own achievements, and still have a supportive partner standing beside you. Those ideas don't contradict each other, they complement each other.
Hi anon,
Regarding you concern,
From what I see, we, real Nicola's fans are incredibly supportive. We don't need to shout the loudest or make everything a competition to show up for her. We celebrate her work, vote when there's something to vote for, support her projects, and get genuinely excited every time she announces something new.
I also think people sometimes mistake being loud for being supportive. They're not the same thing. Nicola has a really lovely fanbase that appreciates her work without needing to turn everything into a fan war, and I honestly prefer it that way.
If anything, I'd say you're probably paying more attention to people who don't actually like Nicola than to the fans who support everything she does. Those are the people I choose to focus on.
One of the reasons I'm excited about Nicola having a part in OMITB, aside from the fact that I already love the show and think she will be a fantastic addition, is because they have had a consistently strong Emmy/SAG presence since their first season.
In fact, the year that Nicola was nominated for her SAG award was the year that they won best comedy ensemble. And several people have been nominated for guest actor/actress at the Emmys over the years.
It is completely within the realm of possibility that Nicola could be nominated for SAG as a part of the ensemble or even an Emmy for guest appearance; especially if her character does in fact have a real connection to the plot and is not just a walk-on cameo.
Given her costume, I'm hoping she is truly a part of the storyline this year. In that case, a nomination wouldn't be far-fetched.
I remember that! Selena looked genuinely stunned when they won. š
I'm not getting ahead of myself when it comes to nominations, but I do think it's encouraging to see the track record the show has. More than anything, I'm just really hoping Nicola has a character that's woven into the mystery!
Awards or not, getting to work with Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and the rest of that incredible cast is already such a special opportunity.
Can we just laugh about lukolas (aka Luke stans) atp instead of taking their bitter jealousy so seriously? As someone who has been anxious about what Nicās work plans are, I can tell you that of late Iām feeling a level of calm and certainty that she has moved beyond Bton (& itās fandom). IAH is being positioned as ch 4ās THE drama of the year for awards and critical acclaim. Then having Tina Fey thinking of her for SNL UK twice! Plus OMiTB casting with actual comedy legends of Hollywood for the last 50 years!
And now sheās working with some serious heavy hitters of prestige drama with Paul Laverty and Iciar Bollain. They donāt work with just anyone and theyāre selective about which stories they tell. The fact that they want to work with Nicola is hugely impressive and reassuring. So I finally feel quite relaxed about the fact that Nic is in a totally different lane to this petty fandom. Iāll also encourage some Nic fans to expand their horizons beyond Bton or Netflix slop to original storytelling by prestigious filmmakers, because weāre going to see Nic attached to a lot more like this i feel!
I don't care nearly enough to laugh at them. It just feels like a waste of time and energy. I'd much rather spend mine getting excited about Nicola's next project.
I never really doubted she'd carve out her own path. She has the talent, the work ethic and, more importantly, the curiosity to keep growing. She genuinely wants to keep learning, work with filmmakers she admires and tell stories that challenge her.
And that's what excites me the most.
It's not the quantity of work, it's the quality. She's building such a varied body of work with people who are respected in completely different corners of the industry.
I trust Nicola's instincts. She has earned that trust over the years. So wherever her career takes her next, I'm just happy to come along for the ride.

A lot of these so-called fans need to stop pretending they like Nicola. I highly doubt they agree with the topics she discusses, much less the values that she lives by. Case in point, they constantly call her manipulative because they disagree with what she says. They claim she's inconsistent when really they're just too dense to understand what she says. They also have a tendency to misquote what she says. Part of me wonders if they're just slow on the uptake, or just plain manipulative themselves. I've concluded that it's a mix of both, but mostly the latter. Why? Because she has always said what she meant and meant what she said, they just don't like what she's been saying lately about her life and relationship.
I think the problem is that some people created a version of Nicola that fit whatever fantasy or narrative they wanted, and then they're disappointed that the real Nicola doesn't match it.
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that she's incredibly consistent. If you actually listen! to her interviews, she's been saying the same things about her career, her values, and what she wants for a long time.
It's also the fact that she remains relevant so despite that not liking her, they try to hold on to any ties to her. Remember that one LN fan who was telling people to leave LN and his gf alone, yet got so upset at Nicola archiving over 50 posts, and left comments on her post/wrote a whole spiel about why she deleted? Of course they conveniently ignore how she deleted many other posts unrelated to Bridgerton, because their lives revolve around the show and their fav. They hate that she's basically distanced herself from him because it's obvious she has more than Bridgerton on her plate now. It's why Nicola fans don't really care if she has little screentime in Bridgerton, she's pretty much outgrown the show. She needs something to challenge herself and her next project is right up her alley.
I've never understood the anger behind the archived posts. The photos are still out there, they're not lost forever, and celebrities clean up their feeds all the time. Nicola has done it before, and it usually seems to happen before a new chapter or a new wave of projects.
I also think people sometimes struggle with the fact that actors move on. Bridgerton will always be an important part of Nicola's career, but it doesn't have to be the center of it forever. She's said herself she'll happily come back when Penelope is needed, but she's also clearly excited about exploring new stories, new filmmakers and new challenges.
As her fan, I'm much more excited by watching her career grow than by trying to keep her frozen in one moment from three years ago.

Itās karmic - Nicola just focuses on her work and the successes keep coming. Sheās a class act.
That's exactly it.
Nicola at Cannes š
From your lips to the film festival gods!
It honestly feels more possible than ever with the kinds of projects she's choosing.
itās the fact that theyāre always humbled too. āmfat is just a childrenās kovieā becomes extremely profitable and confirms two sequels ābig mood is just her friendās projectā bafta nomination ājust a line or two in goatā and sheās one of the core group of voice actors ājust a small scene in OMITBā sheās the girl with the red curls so itās at least something relatively substantial. i mean we know why they act like this but it time to just admit that projecting your envy on nicola isnāt going to work out well for you.
I honestly don't understand why some people keep doing it, especially when it almost always ends the same way. At this point I've learned not to make assumptions about Nicola's roles (okay... maybe one pirate project still has me holding out hope).
I'm so curious to learn more about the girl with the red curls, but for me it's also the fact that she got to work alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and the rest of that incredible cast. You just know Nicola had the best time.
That's what excites me most, watching her work with people she admires and seeing her keep challenging herself with every new project.

They donāt care that Nicola is working with a two-time Palme dāOr-winning screenwriter or has a prominent guest role on a critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning series or is leading a BAFTA-winning drama that Kate Winslet was the most recent lead on.
All they want is Nicola to play Penelope and outside of that, they want her in a fluffy Netflix rom-com opposite Luke so they can see their shipping fantasies played out onscreen.
Yikes... Nicola has been more than clear about where Bridgerton fits into her career now. She'll be back when Penelope is needed, but she's also made it clear she wants to keep exploring different kinds of stories and characters.
And honestly? I'm so so thrilled. Every new project seems so different from the last, and she's working with incredibly talented people on stories that actually have something to say. I genuinely can't wait to see all of it.
We really picked a good one to stan!
She's following her own path, and it's been so much fun watching her career evolve.
Iāve seen many Nicola fans hoping sheāll attend Wimbledon this year. However, Iām sorry to say that I highly doubt she will. One of Wimbledonās main sponsors is Barclays, a financial institution that Nicola openly and strongly criticized on Instagram last year over its alleged ties to the Isr@eli government and the war in Palestine. Given her public stance, it seems unlikely that she would attend the event as long as Barclays remains a principal sponsor.
That's definitely a possibility.
I'm not expecting anything, I just hope she's happy and doing what feels right to her.
