Swimming Lessons

I dipped my toes into the ocean of men's hearts

How silly of me to think I could calm the sea

To believe gliding through crashing waves would bring some saving grace

Still I hoped for island paradise on an iceberg

Still I gave up breaths of air for water to drown my lungs

Still I loved the hurricane over and over again

Until

A washed-up girl washed up on shore

Each sclera a tear-filled cloud above thunderous shouts

She is endowed with storms

Soaking

in sulk

Dripping

in doubt

Yet a woman instinctively soared

Up hill

I prayed "alis grave nil" over each piece of broken heart

How hard will it be to water my own seeds?

To conceive brighter days that could create a sacred place

Now I understand certainty in the unsure

Now I have the depth to prepare for every setting sun

And now I can wade in your eternal fountain
