Give my muse unwanted advice!
He asks to stay and there’s a denial on the very tip of your tongue that you bite back– that wouldn’t be fair. You know you aren’t being fair. To yourself, or to him. Fingers flex for a second before you find some strength to move your arm away from your eyes, blinking tiredly up at the dark ceiling above you. It really was nearly pitch black in here, wasn’t it? “You aren’t bothering me,” you say, hesitantly, “you could never bother me. I’m glad you thought to stop by. Thanks.”
It’s not all lies, at least. You don’t like lying, you make a point not to, but these were your own issues. The fact that they were centered around Lavi– it shouldn’t matter. You should be able to handle it yourself. Right?
… Right?
“I do have something to ask you,” no, you weren’t right, your way of thinking wasn’t right, you knew that from the beginning. You need to rely on others. It’s okay to ask for reassurance. It’s okay to be angry with reason. But it’s not anger. It’s annoyance, it’s jealousy, it’s inadequacy. It feels like what happened before, but worse. “Do you,” another hesitant pause, eyes focused intently on the ceiling still,
“Do you even still wanna be with me?” It comes out harsher than you intend it to– the wording could’ve been better but it hurts, “’Cause I gotta say, it doesn’t really feel like it anymore.”
It catches the redhead off guard and for a moment, he has to wonder if he even heard it right. The reaction that comes out of him is delayed too, or maybe it’s just hesitation. Maybe Lavi is just scared to look at Dirk after such question, even though he shouldn’t be-- there was no reason to. He doesn’t know what prompted Dirk to ask such thing, doesn’t understand what he says shortly after. It leaves the Bookman confused, and when he finally turns to look at the blonde, there is a strange feeling of relief when he notices Dirk wasn’t look at him.
Maybe it’s because he can hesitate, maybe it’s because he was so unused to those kind of things that he worried his body would act in ways that weren’t appropriate for the occasion.
Yet, regardless, Lavi doesn’t know how to answer. Doesn’t at all know why Dirk would ask and say such thing.
❝ Wha-- Of course I do! What are you talkin’ about, Dirkky...? ❞ Out of all the knowledge Lavi has, both from his job as the Bookman apprentice and simply from his hobby to learn new things, relationships and how to deal with them ( and the obstacles that could show up in their way ) was never something Lavi knew much about, if at all. He doesn’t have much idea how to work with them, or how to behave in them, but not once he regretted being with Dirk. ❝ Did I.. ❞ And truthfully, when it came to him, Lavi had become way too soft, way too weak, in a way. ❝ Did I do somethin’ to make ya think that? ❞
For too long of a time has she wandered the aisles of the sector five library in search of a specific genre of book. She’s never been here before and doesn’t know her way around. And it’s not that she’s above asking for help–because she’s definitely not–it’s that she’d rather not trouble someone with such a simple task if it were avoidable. But she didn’t seem to be getting anywhere in finding what she needed, perhaps it was time to ask someone.
❝ Excuse me. ❞ A hand gently sets itself onto the arm of the tall young man beside her. She takes the few seconds she has to look him over. Tousled red hair, an eye patch covering his right eye from what she could see. Few things considered, he was very handsome. ❝ Do you happen to work or come here often? I’m having trouble finding a specific book. ❞
❝ I was wondering if you could assist me. ❞
@inkinglogs
After nearly a year of coming to the same place nearly every week, one would have thought Lavi didn’t have any more business at the library; but books came and went, and there were more than the redhead even had time and eyes to spare, despite his own ability to process things much faster than others. Recording was one thing, but reading for his own interest was another. He has met enough people as well ( pretty girls, nice dudes, weird monsters ), but all things considered, he had never met the pretty girl.
The one who made the Bookman’s heart skip a beat, made his mind go into a blurry and his fact heat up. The girl who Lavi’s mental STRIKE went off for-- really, it hadn’t happened in a while. One thing was cute girls flirting with him, the other was Lavi actually being that much interested, all with those random crushes of his.
When his single eyes averts from white pages and lays on the owner of a voice much softer than the exorcist was used to listening, that warmth feeling he so often used to feel came back in a rush. ❝ I-- ❞ A pause. Time to process the most gorgeous woman he has seen in the last couple of months was talking to him-- asking for his help. TOUCHING HIM. ❝ Absolutely!! I mean-- I don’t work here but yes I can help you, of course!! Anythin’ ya need? I pretty much kinda live here so I know where everything is! What d’ya need? ❞
... And he’s sparkling.
Lavi’s suspicion is certainly justifiable but the timing couldn’t have been worse. It’s possible Bookman’s been knocked around by the Noah so much he’s developed selective amnesia. Maybe he’s just being his insufferable self. Link can’t say and they don’t have the time to puzzle it out. Every second wasted could be a step closer to death. The urge to take Lavi by the shirt and shake him is nearly overwhelming. Somehow Link resists but the frustration makes his words quick and sharp.
“Now is not the time to squabble about loyalties! Have you any idea of how grave our circumstances are?! Walker may be in danger! Save your petty disagreements for some other time!”
If Lavi didn’t know more about the city and Allen’s condition than Link, he would have worried. He would have dropped the attitude and given the other the benefit of the doubt. He would have put Allen’s safety much more ahead his own bickering and stubbornness, but this wasn’t the case. He has seen Allen just a few hours ago, seen the smile on the boy’s face and how well and safe he was.
Besides, truly, Link was the newcomer here. It has been nearly a whole year the Bookman found himself trapped ( which felt less like trapped and more like home as time passes ) in the city, a year of hardships and opportunities he would never have back in the Order, in his world.
Here, even Link isn’t the same.
The redhead waves a hand in front of his face to dismiss Link’s claims; he probably should explain their situation to him, but sooner or later Allen would do it himself. ❝ They aren’t grave at aaaall. Ya just got here, right? Relax, man. Allen’s safe ‘n sound and you got nothing to worry about. I’ve been watching over him. ❞ Which was much better than some watchdog who didn’t even see Allen as his own person, and more like the Fourteenth’s vessel. ❝ Your little dirty job of watching Allen doesn’t really matter here, yanno. There ain’t no Noahs around, no Millennium Earl and most certainly no Fourteenths. ❞ The last bit was a lie, but Link didn’t need to know.

All my favorite characters: Lavi (D.gray-man), Exorcist from the European Branch of the Dark Order and Successor to the Bookman Clan. “War is sorrowful. The flames of war burn away life and dreams and bonds, leaving behind countless sorrows. So sorrow gives birth to tragedy. And tragedy gives birth to Akuma.” | Inspiration
You wait and you wait, it feels like all you ever do, until you hear some movement by the door. The rustling is what you assume to be him putting down the bags in his hands, and you hear the door creak gently and swing almost all the way shut. Really should try to fix that creaking one day, when you actually remembered it did that.
“I don’t think I’m sick,” you answer, tensing briefly when the bed sinks down beneath his added weight as he sits next to you. Your eyebrows furrow behind your arm too, orange eyes squeeze shut even despite the already complete darkness the shield of your arm provides you. This was the worst. You are the worst. Seriously.
This is absolute shit. “No, you don’t have to worry about it,” it’s mumbled, quieter than before considering how close he is now, “Thanks for stopping by, though. Sorry I’m not feelin’ up to much right now.” Or at all, lately.
You really are the worst.
This isn’t exactly something Lavi is good at; he’s at a loss of what to do or say or even if he should be there at all. He doesn’t think he can be much of help, but the very idea of actually leaving leaves a sour taste in his mouth. He was good at cheering people up-- or that’s what he wanted to believe. He was good at being reckless and careless and generally someone who brought a smile to people’s face, whether because Lavi was a genuinely funny person or just because he was stupid enough that people laughed at him-- but still laughed, nonetheless.
There is a considerably long pause before the redhead speaks again. ❝ Is it fine if I stay for a while, though? I can just, dunno, read or somethin’. ❞
He fidgets a bit on the bed and it’s clear that the Junior is somewhat uncomfortable with the whole thing; uncomfortable and unsure of what to do or say, but there were attempts. Maybe selfish ones, but it would be better than stay quiet. ❝ I won’t bother ya or anything, but I figured some company would be nice, y’know. ❞ I missed you too, he wants to complement, but is too embarrassed too. ❝ Unless you’d rather be alone? I can come back tomorrow. ❞
It’s not that you were sleeping, no. You’d just sort of.. well, lacked the energy it would’ve taken for you to get yourself out of bed. Not that it was anything new, but you hadn’t felt this awful in quite a while. It was more draining than you really remember, and the arm draped over your eyes keeps out any light that could possibly filter into the darkness of your room.
And, of course, you’d heard him coming from a mile away.
Lavi is definitely not the quietest person on the face of the planet, but you hardly think the yelling is necessary. You hear the door open and his voice quiets down when he steps inside, thankfully, but.. you still don’t feel like moving. The offer sounds tempting, sure, but the words that follow and even the question are almost infuriating.
“I don’t mind,” it’s flat, monotonous as usual, but you don’t pull your arm from over your eyes. You don’t.. want to look at him. Your eyes always betrayed you, and you really didn’t want to talk about it. “.. I’m not feeling all that great. You’re welcome to stay, if you want to, though,” the offer is there, at least, despite lacking any feeling behind it.
All things considered, for the job and position he has as the Bookman Junior and all of that, for how silly and straight up dumb Lavi could be, he was still an observant person-- most of the time. There were things he was good at picking up ( body movements, mannerisms, things like that, things that mattered as an apprentice ), things he wasn’t in the slightest ( feelings, anything that wasn’t necessary for his training ), and he’s good at noticing that Dirk is acting slightly weird.
He would have asked, sure, but before words even leave his mouth, the question had already been answered, in a way. Any bags the redhead had in hands were left on the floor, and all the cheerfulness that once took care of his entire being was replaced with worry.
❝ Eh? Yer not feelin’ good? Are you sick? ❞ Whatever minimal space he could find on the bed next to Dirk, Lavi settles down there. There’s obvious concern in his voice, much quieter and gentler than it had been previously. ❝ Is there anythin’ I can get ya? ❞
The scolding can come later, Lavi. You see, Link is a man of opportunity, and the moment Lavi reveals himself he’s snatched by the wrist and hauled into the nearest secluded alleyway. Swift as ever, Link wastes no time in putting himself between Lavi and the mouth of the alley to block a hasty escape. He’s a little roughed up and haggard, and the lack of sleep has made him irritable. Too irritable, it seems, to give a proper greeting. He looks Lavi up and down, frowning so deeply the tendons in his neck bulge.
“Back? Enough of your foolishness, Bookman! I’ve only just arrived. I ought to be asking you how long you’ve been here, but instead I’ll kindly insist you keep your voice down and reveal Walker’s whereabouts so we might leave!”
He doesn’t really make a point of explaining how the city works just yet ( actually, he doesn’t even feel like explaining such a thing to someone who worked for lveille, someone who stalked his best friend and lavi had no reasons to trust or be exactly nice towards ), doesn’t explain what he means with back and simply lets the assistant take him by the wrist to a secluded alley ( suspicious, link ) and look at him with eyes that he was sure could frighten young children to the point of trauma.
But Lavi wasn’t a young child; he wasn’t really scared of Link ( hell, he liked to make fun of his two spots ), and for Allen, he would stand up against him.
❝ Ya think I’ll really hand Allen to you like this? This isn’t our world, yanno. Ya don’t have to watch him all the time anymore. Yer owner isn’t even here. ❞ And even though all Link ever did was watch the Fourteenth, instead, who had once taken over Allen, Lavi couldn’t help but worry what he would do if it ever happened again in the presence of the blonde. ❝ Yer gonna have to look for him yourself, alone. I’m not helping you, Two Spots! ❞
whispers in your ear gently (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

❝ CAN YOU STOOOOOP YELLING? ❞
The quiet stillness of the house had been rudely interrupted by his very loud friend, who had just woken up from his slumber. Allen never bothered him when he decided to sleep days on end, as long as he was still here and alive that was enough for him. Lavi waking up though, well that was always a loud occasion such as now. ❝ OF COURSE WE HAVE FOOD, YES I’M ALIVE, NOW BE QUIET! ❞ realizing that he’s yelling in response, he quiets his voice and finds Lavi instead of continuing this meaningless game of yell and seek. ❝ You’re loud enough to wake the dead you know! ❞
Oh! He is alive! Alive and still here, apparently, which was a good sign. Even though the Junior was ready to yell back ( he saw no problem in doing so, it was more practical than finding allen first, wherever he was, right? ), Allen takes his time to come greet his friend himself and cease the yelling the Bookman was so fond of.
He had always been a loud guy. It’s not like Allen wasn’t totally used to it.
❝ ‘Course I’m loud, I’m starvin’! Yer just as loud in the morning, y’know? In the MORNING. When ya need to be extra quiet!!! ❞ He can’t genuinely remember the number of times he was woken up by an angry, starving & scolding Allen because Lavi always slept in. ❝ Good to see you’re still here, though! I’m so used to wakin’ up and seein’ you around that I dunno what I’d do if ya just suddenly left. ❞ Sensitive topic, Lavi.
❝ Ooooooooooooi, Dirkky! ❞ He doesn’t knock as much as doesn’t really call or text. Does that mean he would have to walk around to find out where Dirk could possibly be? Yes, but at times, Lavi likes to surprise him with an unaccounted visit. His apartment wasn’t really his first choice, but when one of Dirk’s roommates confirms he was in his room, Lavi tries not to be too loud when he enters the room.
❝ Yer sleepin’? ❞ That was more of a joke than an actual question ( dirk barely sleeps, he remembers ). ❝ C’mon, it’s time to wake up! Hope ya don’t mind me comin’ uninvited. ❞ Even though he was sure he would always be invited over. ❝ I have been starvin’ all day, so I decided to buy some warm stuff and share with ya! I feel like we haven’t talked in so long. What’s up with that, right? ❞

— War is sorrowful. The flames of war burn away life and dreams and bonds, leaving behind countless sorrows. So sorrow gives birth to tragedy. And tragedy gives birth to Akuma. Happy Birthday @sougu
As much as he enjoys spending most of his free time at the library or down in district Epsilon, there are times Lavi finds himself taking a peek at interesting new things at the Cultural Sector or simply finding fun things to buy in the Shopping District-- where is exactly where the Junior found himself now.
He barely spends money; would rather just rent books or read them at the library and doesn’t really have many things of interest to buy ( and whenever he did buy them, it was either food or small gifts he bought Dirk ), but once in a while, he liked to walk around and see what new things the sector had to offer. That simple knowledge was enough, and who knows-- maybe he would find small gifts for his friends, or even ( despite a rare occasion ), something for himself.
Instead, however, he finds something else. It doesn’t tick at first, doesn’t process what his single emerald eye shows him, and his reaction ends up being... normal, in a way, for a person such as himself. There’s a loud AH!, a point of finger at the direction of a certain blonde, and loud, loud words, for the entire street to hear.
❝ IT’S TWO SPOTS! Two spots is back! ❞ It takes a minute or two for the Bookman to notice how loud he had been ( he never quite cared, though ), and makes sure to walk closer to Link before he probably scolded the redhead for his overreaction. ❝ How long have you been here?! Don’t tell me... Are ya lookin’ for Allen? I won’t tell you where he is! ❞ Despite already confirming he is in the city. Good job, Lavi.
@wachhvnd
❝ ALLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! ❞
Out his room he goes. That felt like the longest slumber he has ever had ( which, honestly, Lavi didn’t mind in the slightest ), and with it, came hunger that felt like he hasn’t eaten a single thing in months. It was almost painful to walk. ❝ OOOOI, ALLEEEEEEEN! YOU HOME? DO WE HAVE FOOD? YELL BACK IF YER STILL ALIVE! ❞
