Buffy’s forcible transition from only-child to eldest daughter marks the change in her perspective on being the slayer: as something characteristic to her into something she can guide others in. The third and fourth seasons mark her struggle with Faith (and the memory of Kendra) as meaning that as long as she is alive, the slayer will be a constant duo-logy. That she is no longer “the only one” who can save people. It takes her a long time to accept that, and with that acceptance a new duty is added. Now she isn’t just the only one that can save the world, but she is also not the only one important to her mother. Buffy is continually ripped of her comforts as the series progresses, she is pushed further and further beyond herself.

She loses her teenage years, her first love, her “specialness” as the slayer, her status as her mother’s priority, her mother, her life, her friends, her dignity, and her home physically and spiritually with the loss of Sunnydale.

The world was not just unfair to Buffy, it was downright cruel. She gave everything, only to end up with nothing at the end of the series. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is potentially the most aggressive metaphor for how violently we lose our childhoods. Buffy loses hers fast and roughly, and she receives no comfort in death at the end of it.
