Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.
This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?

Akio Kubo is a quiet awkward but powerful student. His quirk, Glitch, allows him to have the same physics as a GMod character. He can phase through solid objects, launch things or himself at insane speeds, buffer/slow down speeds, move his own "hitbox", etc. Anything that a laggy game can do he can replicate!
After being caught in a villain attack as a child, his quirk managed to teleport himself and a large group of civilians to safety, earning him renown and respect as well as a recommendation to UA.
However, Akio was not so excited about his predestined future as a Pro-hero, claiming he wouldn't go to UA if he was going to be separated from his brother.
Now we meet Yuto. A completely average quirkless boy whos whole life revolved around how talented and powerful his brother is. Yuto is often overlooked and babied because of lack of power. This led to his growing resentment to his brother and the rest of the world. However, his life still revolved around his brother.
Akio got into UA on recommendation, and Yuto got into UA on Akio's accommodation.
Akio excels in academics and Hero work while Yuto is average in every aspect, all except when it comes to dealing with the rest of the students. Yuto being quirkless, in the hero course, without even getting into the school, immediately a target is placed on his back.

setup steps:
click the code link above — it’ll open a long block of code. copy all of it (don’t include the title). it’s way easier to do this on desktop since mobile has copy limits
on AO3, go to your username → dashboard → skins → create site skin
give it a unique title, paste the CSS you copied, then scroll down and hit submit
once it’s created, just click “use” to apply the skin 🖤
