We needed something to store coffee at the trailer, and I found this cute little tin at thrift for $2. Lined it with a ziplock bag, and even ground some beans to work with the percolator, so we'll have fewer loose grounds at the end of each cup.

Stopped back at the trailer again, but we won't be able to sleep there again until Sunday night.
I found a wood panel at Walmart that fits exactly over the stove burner, so I designed and cut a vinyl decal for it. I'm still learning my way around vinyl transfers, but I didn't do too badly!
We won't use the fireplace until it gets cold, and I wanted to conceal the storage area underneath, so I put up a tension rod and some curtains. Even when we want to turn on the heat, we just have to push the curtain to one side.
Last but not least, we got a small TV, and brought over a little Blu-Ray player from home. Marc mounted it and set it all up. We get more over-the-air channels in the trailer than we do at home!
I popped in Return of the Living Dead to test the Blu-Ray.
This is officially "living."

I love this dumb stupid idiot so much.
Now that it's all done and settled, I feel better talking about it. We bought a travel trailer.

We were getting overrun with cucumbers, so last night I water-bath canned two quarts of pickle slices, plus a third smaller container for the refrigerator. I already had to harvest another ripe one just now, and there's a slew of small ones doing their best. We're going to be lousy with pickles by the end of the season.
One of the worst things about AI slowly and steadily infiltrating my job--although certainly not the ONLY thing--is that my boss is head over heels with it, and everything it can do. He loves the look of AI, which is the living bane of every graphic designer everywhere. He has no skills or design sense of his own, so AI--like every other person on FB who is just tickled to be able to generate a Disneyfied picture of their kid with no more than a few keyboard clicks between handfuls of Cheetos--gives him a false sense of accomplishment and skill.
Of course he's going to want to be best buddies with the faceless guy that lives in his computer and tells him he's the Rarest and Most Special Boy, and all his ideas are good ones.
So now I'm paralyzed with frustration and indecision when I sit down to design something, because I know he's going to want it to look more AI. He's going to run anything I design through ChatGPT or Gemini to "improve it", and then send it back to me and say, "Can't you just do this, this looks great!"
Yeah, boss, can we maybe lay off the jizz squirt lines on everything we do? Also, ChatGPT doesn't understand print margins, readability, or microfolding. It's designed to the wrong dimensions, and real life paper doesn't fold this way.
If I try to explain that, I'm being negative, and he doesn't like trouble-makers or problem children. I'm contradicting the man who lives in his computer and tells him he's an old soul with only the best and most groundbreaking ideas.
This is not a platform where I have a voice to say, "I don't want to do this. This is discouraging and disheartening in a way that eats at my soul."
Because my employer would happily replace me with some new AI-embracing upstart who will gladly and gratefully trade their soul for a paycheck.
And man, I need to buy a lot of kibble.
Oh, it's going to be a "Crying in the Car on the Way to Work" day, huh? Cool. Cool cool cool. Haven't had one of those in awhile.

“…she loved old tales, and wild uncanny legends of kelpies and water-horses and sea-bulls, of fairy-lovers and solitary walkers in the night, of the green-clad cailleach on the hillside singing her fatal song as she milked the wild deer, of the bewitched thorns under which folk lay down to awake witless, of horns heard in the moonshine, and strange forlorn music in desolate places, and of what came of these and other omens and perversities…”

This piece began very well! I especially thought the bottom half displayed the reflection of the sky beautifully!
And then there's the sky...
The Auroras actually started out fairly decently and I was quite happy while painting...maybe too happy because I started adding things...and adding things...making touch ups...darkening places then getting unhappy and having to expand the sky to cover the mistake..etc..etc...
In other words, you have to know when to STOP painting because not being able to resist this temptation, will often lead to heartbreak and frustration.
As a watercolorist, I feel it is important to post my mistakes as well as my good pieces because as humans, we all struggle. I get many messages telling me how they wish they could paint like me, but they make too many mistakes...some haven't picked up a brush in years, but my work has inspired them to try again. I am telling all these wonderful people:
Put down your phones or tablets, and close out Tumblr. Pick up a brush and just paint, don't overthink it. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece or anything at all. Just feel the brush in your hand as you dip it into the cool, clean water then watch with joy as the colours burst onto the paper. Seeing those jeweled colors mixing and blending on a colorless surface will inspire you to create more.
Art is true joy you can give yourself.

We stopped at two thrift shops while we were in the mountains. Small, rural thrift shops are pretty much the only place you can find old cassette tapes anymore (I like to buy the record-your-own tapes and see what people have put on them), and they're also a great resource for old cookbooks.
I actually found both, on this trip! I haven't sat down to listen to the tapes yet, but this cool Old New England Cook Book came with someone's handmade wooden cover.
The recipe book itself is c.1936, but tucked inside there was an entire page from an old newspaper from December 1988, with a bunch of different cookie recipes. My heart!
In honor of our cucumber harvest, I bought this amazing little handmade stuffed pickle at the flea market on Sunday. Go visit gegesflocreations on Tiktok (Instagram seems to be down!) to see more of her amazing work!
We're due for two days of rain, but I've been fooled before, so I went out to do quick water before our writing group. The caterpillars are still chowing down (I assume it's the same ones--no sign of chrysalises yet), and this little cicada let me pick him up and relocate him to a dryer vine.
Still only two small pumpkins, sadly, but I scavenged a few blackberries from the canes that are desperately hanging on from the cull, and another cucumber! There are already others growing like mad. We're going to be lousy with pickles!
Took Jim to the lake to spend some time getting caught up with his brother, and managed to catch this beauty while they were chatting.

We left midday for the mountains, after a few last-minute preparations for the pet sitter, and to be sure we wouldn't come home to a complete disaster.
Got back from the mountains (an update on that later) to find that the little curtains I ordered had arrived. we tied them up on the TV console, and I'm super pleased with how they look in the living room.
My Mom got a free subscription to People, which she, uh, kindly decided to share with me. So now I have a growing stack of magazines I don't read and am a little embarrassed to have out. Maybe one of the neighbors will want them.
I wonder if I can find or buy another type of curtain to hide the baskets full of crap on the entryway table...
