It’s always been strange to me the amount that Dess in fandom is associated with the electric guitar. And, sure, we learn through Raise Up Your Bat that Dess loved rock music videos— but it’s explicitly an acoustic guitar that she owns. So I had an idea for a comic about that contrast and what it might represent about her character.
Its very possible that people won’t like this one because I made Dess kind of bratty. But you know, she’s a messy teen, she should show it! I’m living my Bratty Dess truth. Ooh is that a ship? Bratcember? Gatordoe?
Anyways, to me the electric/accoustic split represents the division between Dess’s personality and aspirations and her family’s quiet, reserved qualities that constrain her. And while a part of her is resents her family for that, at the end of the day she still loves them, with that kind of love that hurts because it’s a contradiction. Thats what I feel is represented by the guitar, for me at least.
