Visited Highgate cemetery. Hauntingly beautiful.
I fucking hate twitter and I hate the topics feature but this ONE time, this single time, they got me
Online classes are working for me, I’m starting to catch up on all the classes I missed earlier this semester and it’s getting easier for me. Spring has begun and the sun really energizes me! My plants also love it and my monstera is giving me a new leaf.
Please stay home if you can and be safe everyone!
dark academia but it’s online school
- waking up early in the morning to watch the sunrise, even though you don’t actually need to
- staying up late to read or paint because you don’t have to get up early
- handwriting assignments that should be typed and submitted digitally
- having a coffee cup with you, rather than a thermos because you don’t have to take it anywhere
- still getting ready and dressed so that you can feel focused on your work in the mornings
- emailing your teachers to see if they have any extra reading related to the topic
- turning in all of the assignments for the week earlier than the rest of your class because you wanted to finish them early
- not doing any assignments for the week because you were too interesting in researching about different planets or the deep sea
Writing novels, writing scripts, writing poetry, and writing short stories are all completely different skills and if you’re not good at one of them yet and you’re good at another don’t beat yourself up about it. You wouldn’t call an oil painter stupid because he can’t make a bronze sculpture. He’s an oil painter. He’s never made a sculpture before. Give him a minute to figure it out.
So if you’ve only ever written short stories don’t beat yourself up because your one act play is crap. You’re learning how to walk again. Let yourself fall flat on your face a couple of times.

Fountain of the goddess Diana (Artemis), Royal Palace of Caserta: Reggia di Caserta, Italy.
That strange feeling of longing when you are at a train station, in a 24/7 open market, when you are buying a coke from a vending machine, watching the city lights glow from your window, when you're walking aimlessly on a busy street after 5 pm, that feeling as if something is missing in your life and it will never come back although it was never there in the first place; that inexplicable urban sadness.
This is an actual thing in anthropology and urbanism guys!
Marc Auge explained how when we shifted from modernity to what he calls "supermodernity" we ended up creating "non-places". They're the opposite of place, as in they're places with no real identity, and have no real emotional connection with the users. They're there to fulfil a specific need and that's it. It's places like gas station, metro station and supermarkets, places where you go and you feel so detached, like everything is out of place. (The name of the book is "Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity" it's really interesting)
Rem Koolhaas also has a similar concept called Junkspaces, which are basically spaces that are born out of a capitalistic lifestyle, where everything is about selling and being bigger and more. Like malls and airports, and most big buildings. It's places that are empty, that tend to cut you off from the outside world and have no real connection to the users other than functionality. He also talked about the struggle of identity and city planning in Asian cities specifically in his essay "the generic city" and talks about how a lack of identity can lead to "empty" cities and this "urban sadness" op was talking about
Romanticizing back to school as a coping mechanism bc my teachers are toxic af, I spend 2 hours every day to get to school and back home, I’m sleep deprived, I don’t really have time or energy for my interests, don’t really have time to take care of myself but hey, cute notes and sweaters and stuff uwu
“At that point, it was impossible for me to see myself as anything other than the guise I had spent my entire life curating. I thought that if someone were to look at me for a little longer than necessary they would see it too, so I tried to hide. I hid in the way I spoke, the clothes I wore, the things I admired. Facing the reality of who I was, was something I never thought I would have to do, but I have grown to like, or even admire, her. Through the cracks of my front she found ways to appear, and when you met me you knew exactly where to find her.”

types of academia pt. 1
dark: black coffees and teas, silver signet rings, worn paperbacks, ink smudged hands, eyes in starlight, frayed sweaters, cashmere, wine colored lips, dark lashes, the smell of liquor and cigars, broken glass, humming softly down corridors, stacks of books all around your room, oak and vanilla, the perfect mix of sugar and poison, speaking in ancient languages, rain fogging your glasses, old clocks ticking, vinyl static, searching for meaning, lines of poetry written down your arms, obscured by an air of ambiguity, morally grey... murder?
cryptid: journal full of research and hand drawn sketches of cryptids, shelves full of sci-fi novels, binoculars and a chunky camera from the thrift shop shoved in your backpack, maps with red string and mysterious newspaper clippings pinned on the wall, looking for clues, hundreds of travel plans but none follow a coherent itinerary, you swear that was a ufo in the sky last night, dreaming to make a discovery bigger than life
goth: dark lipstick, abandoned buildings, velvet dresses, lace trimming, feathers around your feet, piano notes stretching through empty halls, the sand of an hourglass falling quicker, fishnet socks, ornate mirrors and candelabras, kerosene lamps, first edition copies of books, smudged eyeliner, a silhouette behind a moonlit window, stoppered bottles of mysterious liquids, melancholy and roses, living in legend
witchy: old grimoires gathering dust, clippings of your favorite spells pinned up, diagrams of plants inked in black in your book of shadows, teacups with already read tea leaves, tracing the lines on your friend/lover’s palm and secretly interpreting the meanings, incantations of the stars and planets, whispering to the plants on your windowsill before bed, piercings and stacked silver rings that catch the moonlight just right, lipstick the color of coagulated blood, smudged sigils up and down your arms under long sleeves
science: leather bound journals full of graph paper and notes, beakers and tubes of chemicals, researching the history of alchemy, the familiarity of the lab coat, the warmth of the soft yellow light in your room after the harsh fluorescents of the laboratory, your favorite research articles pinned to your wall, a folded copy of the periodic table in the pocket of your favorite jacket, debating over different scientific theories with your friends instead of studying, writing your poetry in chemical formulas and comprehending through atomic structure
The Secret History, 1992.
