Publishing as Artistic Practice / Exhibition at Vulkano, Gothenburg August 19-21 // 2022
Weekend exhibition with 14 participants at the art space Vulkano in Gothenburg, curated and organised by Lani DuVall.
I showed parts of my Studio books project for the first time, which was interesting and exciting to see that work together with other publishing projects.
Text (Bio) from exhibition: Mattias GunnarssonI am an artist / educator / designer living and working in Gothenburg. Artistic publishing is an important part of my practice and has been so for the last ten years, both as a maker of zines and artists books as well as organizer of publishing-related situations. In 2016 I started and worked with, the HDK-Zine library in collaboration with Gothenburg University library. The archive is a donation based project where makers can submit (and publish towards) self-published work, both zines and artists books, that gets cataloged in the library system and open to anyone to browse and borrow.
I have participated in several national and international zine-fairs and communities, though my main distribution of work is trading with other makers and I have done some 200+ trades over the years, that has functioned both as reaching audience as well as building archive of others work. Since February 2022 I run the Salon de Papier together with design and curator group DOMA and Gathenhielmska huset. Besides my own publishing work I also work with MASUworks which is an ongoing publishing platform that follows the work of the artist collaboration project MASU (Mattias Gunnarsson and Susanne Westerberg). MASUworks has yet produced and circulated 14 issues related to their exhibition work.In this exhibition I will show (parts of) a project called Studio books, which is a growing set of collage books that I make and keep parallel to other art projects. The books have neither a given narrative nor chronology which make possible for new stories and kinship across several projects and times. The Studio books are also an archive of my processes. Â
Salon de Papier // 220222 // Premiere
Salon de Papier is a space for sharing and discussion, a showcase of new and innovative work, and a spark for multi-disciplinary collaboration. Each event will feature a guest artist, publisher or curator, who will talk about their work and their inspirations. There will also be an informal âshow and tellâ section, as well as opportunities for participants to trade zines and make donations to a communal zine library, which will be housed at Gathenhielmska Huset.
The project aims to reach artists, authors, designers & curators who are interested in self-publishing. Self-publishing, such as zine-making (the making and distribution of zines and artist publications), is a vital part of literary & artistic culture. There are several artists working within this field in GĂśteborg, however they are mostly working independently of each other and their work is reaching a limited audience. We hope to launch a new event to bring artists together, build a community, support collaboration & help participants reach new audiences.
The production and distribution of self-published artistic material such as zines, books, pamphlets, prints and artists books is quite often done in small editions as part of building community and to connect to an interested audience. The DIY part of the work makes the art of self published material accessible and possible for a big group of creators (anyone can make a zine!) and can serve as a platform for a great variety of artists, writers, photographers, poets etc to reach audiences and communities also outside of the commercial gallery and book publishers. The formats lend themselves well for the political, temporary and subversive as well as the initiated, personal and exploring expressions.
In the spring of 2022 we will host events when we can and we aim to start running the salon on a monthly basis from the fall of 2022.
Salon de Papier is a collaborative project between Mattias Gunnarsson, DOMA, Sarah Alfarhan and Gathenhielmska huset in Gothenburg.
