Voters in Virginia and Nevada — both states where abortion is already legal through at least 24 weeks of pregnancy — are considering state constitutional amendments to create a right to abortion.

They offer the thrill of revelation without the burden of dealing with complexity.

They have different jargon and different priorities, but provide the same relief: Finally the world makes sense...and everything wrong is someone else's fault.

They're all selling the same emotional experience: A moment of awakening. That lightning bolt where everything suddenly makes sense. Whether it’s "the elites are eating babies" or "whiteness is a structural force," the rush is identical. You're not just learning, you're enlightened. The veil has been lifted.

They provide a villain who explains everything. No messy complexity, just a clear bad guy. The outgroup. The sick, immoral Them which is standing in the way of the righteous Us. Globalist elites. The Patriarchy. The Libs.

They provide a tribe that gets it. Once you're in, you're not just agreeing with ideas. You're part of a We, a totalizing in-group. Outsiders (They) are blind, brainwashed, or evil.

Why do so many people fall into this trap? Human brains love shortcuts. Thinking is hard. Wrestling with uncertainty is exhausting.

These ideologies hand you a pre-packaged reality where you don't have to weigh evidence, you just have to follow the script.

It feels good. The high from feeling that you see the truth is addictive. That's why people double down on their narrative even when facts contradict them. Admitting doubt means losing that sweet, sweet certainty fix. The prospect withdrawal is terrifying.

Blame is comforting. If everything wrong in the world is because of them, then you're not just a spectator, you're a warrior. Warriors don’t have to engage in messy, difficult, painful self-reflection. They just fight.

The right phrase is the signal or shibboleth that you're in the club.

But no ideology or narrative explains everything.

The world is chaos, power is complicated, nobody is in charge, and most of us are just guessing and fumbling our way forward.

But that's a tough sell. Nobody wants to hear it.

Who wants to swallow the "maybe-I-need-to-keep-thinking-about-it" pill when they can have the "I-can-see-the-Matrix-glitching-and-there-is-no-spoon" fantasy?

We have to learn to hold our beliefs seriously, but lightly enough to keep re-examining them with the receipt of new information.

We have to stay curious.

We have to accept that not knowing is part of being human in a bizarre, complex, baffling world.

The worst example of thanklessness you’ll probably hear about- today.

In late 2004, a 21 year old woman from Gaza, suffered severe, life-threatening burns as a result of an accident involving a kitchen gas canister.

Since the hospitals in her city lacked the specialized facilities to treat outcomes of that severity, Israeli authorities granted her a humanitarian medical pass to cross into Israel.

She was admitted to the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, where Israeli doctors and nurses spent months treating her and ultimately saving her life.

How did she thank them?

On June 20, 2005 she was scheduled for a routine followup examination in that same hospital, which required her to cross back into Israel.

Counting on her medical paperwork- she thought she could hide a 10kg device under her traditional black robes and not get caught.

Luckily, the security guards on the border- have noticed that she was walking awkwardly and heavily, asked her to go through a detector and she got caught before reaching the hospital.

During the subsequent interrogation and later media interviews- she explicitly stated that her intention was to target the Soroka Medical Center.

Simply because she knew its layout and the most crowded spots.

When asked by journalists how she could justify targeting the doctors and nurses who saved her life, she stated that her commitment to the cause- took precedence over personal gratitude.

Eventually she will be released in an exchange deal about 6 years later.

Upon her return to Gaza, she was greeted as a hero.

In a footage of her homecoming, she addressed a crowd of children gathering around her, explicitly urging them to follow her footsteps.

In later interviews, she repeated that she felt no remorse and still hoped for another chance to carry out her intentions.

Approximately 81 percent of all structures in Gaza were destroyed in the recent war. Only about 3 to 4 percent of people in Gaza died at the time of war—and that includes terrorists, civilians, and even natural deaths!

All this in the course of nearly three years of war.

This is NOT genocide.

Within eight years, between 60 and 70 percent were murdered!

We don’t have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, they’ll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.

It’s kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.

An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where they’re an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.

Drone incursions are becoming more and more of an issue when it comes to wildfires, so last year I designed these graphics, but I never got around to sharing them anywhere.

If you send your drone up during a wildfire, even if you don't feel like you are that close, all planes and helicopters in the area may have to be grounded which can have a massive and detrimental effect on first responders' ability to manage that fire.

If you send your drone up and a plane or helicopter hits it, no matter how small your drone is, it could crash that aircraft injuring or killing those on board and potentially people on the ground as well. Even if the aircraft stays up, it will have damage that could ground it for an indeterminate and potentially extensive amount of time, meaning one less resource is available for that fire and other fires.

Just don't do it.

According to a new survey, one in eight young Americans views favorably an Iranian-backed Islamist movement that deliberately murdered civilians, abducted children, committed acts of sexual violence, and continues to define its struggle through the destruction of Israel and western civilization. It is a sobering measure of how profoundly moral judgment has eroded.

This did not happen by accident.

It is the predictable harvest of an ideological culture that has spent years reducing history to the crude binary of “oppressor” and “oppressed,” while discarding the universal moral standards upon which every free society depends.

Within this worldview, violence is excused when committed by those granted ideological immunity. Terrorism is repackaged as “resistance.” Antisemitism is disguised as social justice. Atrocity becomes a matter of perspective rather than principle.

Civilizations do not usually perish because their enemies become stronger. They perish because they lose the intellectual and moral confidence to distinguish good from evil, liberty from tyranny, and civilization from barbarism.

The survey is not merely an indictment of a generation. It is an indictment of the institutions that taught them that clarity is prejudice, that objectivity is oppression, and that moral conviction is something to be apologized for.

A society that cannot bring itself to condemn terrorism without qualification has already surrendered far more than an argument. It has begun to surrender its civilization.

How do y'all respond when you hear the "I'm gay and the Nazis came after us too and the Holocaust wasn't just about Jews and I don't know why people think that yadda yadda yadda" patter?

If it's someone who seems willing to listen I'll explain how the nazi homophobia circles back to antisemitism. If not, maybe some derogatory comments about them and their close family.

and there are a lot of great points in the notes about how the Nazis' homophobia was rooted in antisemitism. Another thing for me is the fact that, had the Nazis been successful, there would be no Jewish life today. Queer people will always continue to be born, but for Jews, the only way to become a Jew requires other Jews - either being born to Jewish parents or being affirmed as a Jew by a rabbinical court of three other Jews. Had all presently living Jews been wiped out, all future generations of Jews would have been wiped out as well. The Nazis certainly would've liked to wipe out all queer existence, but that isn't possible. The permanent eradication of all Jewish existence was at stake in a way it simply wasn't for queer people.
