Acting is learning about the life around you and the person you are. You can learn all the techniques in the world but if you know nothing about life or yourself, then you’re at a loss.
Washoe was a common chimpanzee and the first ever non-human to learn how to communicate with sign language. She was raised as close to a human child as possible. One of her care workers, Kat, suffered a miscarriage and took a few weeks off work. When she returned, Washoe seemed upset that she had left her for a prolonged period of time. Kat signed that she was sorry and signed “my baby died,” to which Washoe responded by signing the word “cry” before running her finger down Kat’s cheek, mimicking a tear. She then asked Kat for a hug. Washoe, who had lost her own babies, appeared to be sympathetic and understanding toward Kat’s own pain and loss.

The first time I met Bryan Cranston, he was standing in his underwear. We were doing a photo shoot for a little-known network called AMC, and he was in a rubber chemistry apron, tighty whities and desert boots, while I was in an impeccably tailored 1960s suit, a cigarette dangling from my mouth. Our shows hadn’t premiered yet. We were simply two actors, in costume and out of context.

it’s just started to hit me recently how fucking heinous the concept of empowerment was in terms of feminism. i remember first being exposed to the culture surrounding empowerment when women were beginning to embrace female domination in a sexual setting, saying stuff like “eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man” and whatnot. it was all based in uplifting themselves and putting themselves in a position of power, which isn’t inherently bad. however, no one ever wanted to acknowledge that these things are still, ultimately embracing the patriarchal ideals of always being sexually appealing and available to men. and from that point on, it only got worse. women began to convince themselves that there was a feminist aspect to being subservient, submissive, docile. as if these aren’t traits engrained into us from the moment we’re born. femininity, sexual availability to men, and the acceptance of traditional gender roles were introduced into feminism just gradually enough for women to accept them without realizing that they are in fact returning to square one. exactly where our patriarchal society wants them to be. feminine, sexually and emotionally submissive, to the point where many feminists believe that having the best makeup or letting their boyfriends infantilize and sexually abuse them (with consent of course) is genuinely more empowering and more progressive than rejecting the gender roles imposed on us our whole life.
from the very beginning, empowerment was just an awful scheme designed to make women feel more comfortable in their designated roles in a world that was just starting to challenge them
Also there was money to be made.
