Can you please please please do a color tutorial?? I’d be ever so grateful.
this has been a long while coming!! i completely forgot about getting about to doign one jsdhf here we go!!!!
1) Lineart
most of if not basically all of my art starts with some sort of line art (as opposed to blocking in with the painting brush straight away and then defining from there on out). i sketch with whatever colour i please, and then I change the lineart to a dark saturated red [new layer, fill with colour, set to clipping mask, merge down] from there, I set it to multiply, and lower the opacity to about 74%
2) Colouring
I’ll be showing my process for doing skin colours, but before that, it can be useful to give whatever brush you’re working with colour variation. I’m not sure if you can outside of photoshop, but if you are using that program my settings tend to be around here:
It’s not massively important but it can help to make the paint look a little less digital, and at the very least it can help areas that might look monotonous otherwise. I wouldn’t recommend setting any of the jitters higher than 3%.
Start blocking in some colours underneath the lineart. I don’t recommend making a base of all one colour for this.
Typically, I start at the nose. IDK why. If you don’t want to go straight into using saturated colours, pick a tone half way from left to right (at the correct darkness and approximate hue) and work from there. Try to vary the colours you pick at first, and make sure that you work up and down the bar I highlighted. Use it according to the light source. Typically, the lighter something is, the more desaturated you should pick the colour, and the darker the more saturated. This isn’t always true of course, but for the most part it can stop the tones from looking muddy or underwhelming. The same could be said for using too much desaturated light, though, so judge for yourself when to break that rule.
(the colours look a little off compared to how they do in photoshop, which is, you know, ideal for a colouring tutorial) here’s the same base, but expanded upon in different ways. The first has just been tweaked lighter and darker, whereas the second has been picked somethign like this:
between each gradient, (most strongly so between the highlight and base tone) I’ve added a little bit of saturation to add interest to the colours.
(Again, the colours are looking way yellower and greener here but.) Another thing i like to do that sort of flies in the face of the previous advice a bit is to make the darkest tones one desaturated (or blue) shade.
(tumblr is def making this greener jesus)
While you’re blocking in colours, keep in mind the plains of the face and try to apply colour according to the subjects face structure. When you’re done with all that, merge the colour layer with the lineart and work from there to make any ammendments. Usually the finish prodduct isn’t too far off. I would avoid using multiply/darken/screen etc layers at all if possible (besides the lineart layer). The way I paint is very close to how i paint in real life, except the results are much more pleasing lmao
if you want to know anythign more specific or want any more tips my ask is always open!!!!!! i really hope you all found this helpful :’3
