aaaahh thank you for the ask! It gives me the opportunity to share ideas I had for pieces that will likely never be finished, but maybe people will appreciate them anyway. I’m not going to share my actual current work in progress because there is a good chance that will see the light of day (fingers crossed) but I’ve found a few pieces in the depths of my procreate that I can ramble about:
Okay so this first pieces was never really more than a sketch, this only ever had one hour spent on it. As you can see by the reference the idea was that Charles is being treated like a bug and pinned up by one, but when I first thought of this idea I didn’t actually understand how this process worked as I thought the pins actually went into the specimen, so I think that was one of the downfalls of this piece. Didn’t stop me from putting a pin in both his tie and bun which were both for my entertainment only. A common theme with some of these abandoned pieces is that I really struggle to draw David which is why I have never posted a drawing of him, but not through want of trying. The main inspiration for this piece was me trying to force him into the song ‘boys, bugs and men’ by Paris Paloma, please give it a listen if you haven’t already, it’s about how boys who mistreat bugs as a show of power grow up to be men who mistreat others around them, and in the context of the show I was thinking about Charles being forced to watch boys kill bugs in front of him as a child and then these boys grew up into men like Tar and Fleming etc. This one I stopped working on because a found it too difficult but I still like the concept so I would love to see someone else have a go at it if they so wish.
Next piece! This was inspired by the waltz (I think??) version of Just For Tonight that hylian-prosecutor made (not going to tag them because I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I failed to finish making something in homage to another person’s art). Again I think one of the main problems is that I can’t draw David (I will try again in future I promise), but also this was from April, so what I was trying to do with the colours was something I had never done before, and added to the fact that I was trying to take inspiration from JC Leyendecker I think I just bit off more than I could chew. I am getting better with colour theory (though I do still have a long way to go), and the piece I did after this one was the Alex-Peter ring flash one, so I think in future before I try something new I need to do studies of that thing first. The idea is that as Monty spins them around he is able to pass the briefcase off to an out-of-shot hand and Charles doesn’t notice because he is very out of his depth (as seen by him gripping Monty’s shoulder). But yeah Annika that piece of music was very beautiful and I do like this idea so maybe I’ll give it another go sometime. The piece got 4 hours and my main takeaway is that one of these days I will do a Leyendecker inspired piece and it will be successful because I am so obsessed with his art.
Onto the third piece! This is my most recent abandoned work and honestly the only reason I stopped working on it was I realised I needed to do something for Pride. So actually the hopes of this one being picked back up aren’t zero it just needs some more love. This piece also got four hours and I don’t think there’s necessarily a significance for it to be a church window, I just enjoyed doing my good omens one and wanted to give it another go. It’s another attempt at a Just For Tonight piece with Monty dragging Charles through the bars of early morning London (hence the fog(?) that also looks like waves) and then we also see three of the submariners with their portholes. This one would take a very long time to finish but at the same time would be rather fun as the hardest part of deciding all their poses is already done…
Bonus piece!! When thinking about which pieces to include for your lovely ask I didn’t actually remember this one until I saw it in my gallery and even looking at it now I can’t quite remember what this was supposed to be about. I think honestly I was just being sentimental about scouting and thinking about how Charles (in the musical, I’ve never researched the actual guy in my life. I think that’s a good rule of thumb for all my art) would have cherished his scouting badges but not necessarily have wanted or cared for a medal he may have received for the operation (‘we’ve made a change and that’s enough’). I was then combining that with the thought that Monty may have wanted Charles to have taken pride in what he had achieved, and thus placed the Victoria cross onto his badge sash. If this seems convoluted it’s because even I don’t fully know what my train of thought was for this piece and it’s probably best it stays that way. What I do remember is wanting this piece to be very colourful hence why the drawer is green. If anyone resonates with and/or actually understands this idea please let me know, I’m sure me from 4 months ago who frantically scribbled this out in an hour would be thrilled.
If anyone has actually read all the way through this and wants to chat about any of my ideas here please do!! As you can see I am always eager to yap about my art, but my inbox and dms are open for tapping about anything else also! Like I said anyone is free to take one or more of these ideas and run with them, change them, make them better. I think this also helps to show that as much as I love to try and create using original ideas I struggle and tend to retreat back to studies as a find them easier. I am trying though! My Jean piece was me inserting a character into an art piece in the style of that art piece, which is what my current work in progress is an attempt at, but sometimes I am able to persevere and my first example of that was my Alex!Monty in a frame piece which lots of people really resonated with which was so lovely to see.
