I Can Fix That - a John Logan x F!reader one shot.
a/n: ok so I watched Disney movies all day & Holes was on and all I could think of during the Sam and Ms. Katherine montage/backstory was John Logan and reader flirting with each other by you giving a bunch of tasks and he just wants to be around you and for you to be taken care of so he does all of it with a smile and an ‘I can fix that.’
warnings: 18+ ONLY — typical shirtless shenanigans, longing, fix it felix, handyman!logan, neighbors, strangers to lovers, descriptions of sexual acts, teasing, dirty talk, making out, fingering, oral (f!receiving) protected sex, p n v. he talks you through it cause it's john fucking logan, of course he does.

You'd moved into the old McAllen home that was next to the boys' house last semester and run into nothing but issues since you'd signed the lease. Within the first three months of living there, your water heater had gone out, the garbage disposal stopped working and on warm nights, sometimes the air conditioning would go on the fritz, leaving you in sweltering heat and being miserable in your underwear while laying on top of your bed.
Your landlord was absolutely useless and you were probably on a list of dozens of other properties that were probably experiencing the same issues. And for a while, you just grit your teeth and dealt with it the best you could.
"You," he nods with the same surprised look on his face, laughing softly. "Yeah, you," he states with a shrug.

[A/n: This isn't good, in fact, it's so far from good that I am ashamed lol. But, in my defense I've had writers block and wasn't really feeling it]

Little pinpricks of blood were a constant in your line of work. A needle would dig into a canvas of skin before retracting at breakneck speed. It was hard to see the red through the frothy mix of ink, but if you left a client sitting in the same stiff position for too long, it would puddle around the design. You made a habit of wiping it away before they noticed. Blood; theirs, someone else’s, was an instant flag for panic.
When the hot sliver of metal nearly took out your eye as a kid, there was too much adrenaline to feel it. It was just a cold pressure. You hadn’t realized anything was wrong at first. Your brother and father were slackjawed and statuesque. When drops of blood soaked into the fresh powder snow, melting it upon impact, your mind caught up with your body. You were dizzy, and shaking, and too warm all at once.
Stupidly, in your fumbling panic now, you grasped Jude’s chin and turned his head from one side to the other. He was coated in a viscus sheen of red, kneeling in it. His face had been pressed to the floor when you found him. If his eyes hadn’t been clenched so tightly, you would have figured he’d suffered the same fate as your bloodline: slipping and sliding in their own life.
“You’re okay,” you soothed, “It’s going to be okay- just close your eyes.”
Oh Rachel, I would've love you so beautifully.
Maybe the reader is Nicky’s sister (older or younger, whichever you prefer), but unlike the rest of the family, she’s very like put together. She speaks her mind, confident, and doesn’t really get pulled into all the chaos the same way. She just kind of stands her ground and does her own thing.
I think it’d be interesting if that’s what catches Rachel’s attention, like yk the reader stands out because she’s not like everyone else, and Rachel ends up getting kind of fixated on her because of it.
From there, I’d love if it developed into something more intense sexual, depending on what you’re comfortable writing. Like that tension building into something physical eventually.
Title: With Scarves of Red
Ship: Rachel Harkin x Fem!Reader
Summary: You're invited to your twin brother Nicky's wedding. Though, you've never met the bride. There's something strangely captivating about her that makes your family a little more bearable.
Warnings: Mentions of grief and death, a bad marriage, animal death (very minimal, just alluded to), Canon-typical violence, blood, mentions of curses, smoking, cheating (sort of, ig) and horrible grammar! I don't proofread!

[A/n: Right, so I got a little carried away with this one. I was trying to get the voices down, and this could probably use a part two. But I had fun!]

The invitation came in the form of a text message with horrible grammar. It was curt, but shot something queasy through your stomach regardless. It was the contact name. Julien never reached out to you directly. None of your siblings did. Not unless someone had died, or was getting married. And thankfully, thankfully, it was the latter.
You paled all the same, abandoning the unwavering focus on the design in front of you. Something that was a mish-mash of traditional and Russian Prison style that you itched to add color to. The lead tip of your pencil broke, shooting to some unknown spot in your area. You distantly heard it ping off something.
On unsteady legs, you knocked on your supervisor's door. He glanced up at you, pushing his glasses into his salt and pepper hair before waving you in and insisting that you take a seat. Jim was stretched every different way, but to his credit, gave you his undivided attention. Right now his tender gaze felt like a weight on your chest.
He was an older man, most of the ink on his arms had blown out with age, but still looked pristine in their purpose. His beard had grown scruffier since he last shaved two summers ago. His wife insisted he take a back seat, spend more time in his office and less time fighting the carpal tunnel in his hands.
“I need the rest of the week for a family event.” You told him, not able to meet his eyes. You traced the design on the top of your knuckles, as if you were etching them from memory alone. “I know it’s short notice. I can pick up an extra Saturday when I get back.”
Jim frowned, the wrinkles around his eyes pinching like he was a man that smiled genuinely and often. “Don’t even worry about that. Take the time you need. You have an apprentice, put her to use.”
Holy banger

Clark has been acting strange all week.
He got into work on Monday with a red face, and you didn’t question it. He runs everywhere. It’s a little ridiculous he doesn’t have a red face more.
“Want some water?” You’d tapped on his desk, and he’d let out a sharp breath.
“Yeah.” His voice had been strangely rough, his glasses almost slipping off his nose. “Water- Water would be nice. Thank you.
He hadn’t looked you in the eyes.

warning: Harkonnens are are their own warning, reader is from house Ginaz, possessive behaviour, kissing, fluff, knife use, blood, no use of Y/n
Summary: With the marriage plan, the ceremonies on both their home planets were a necessity. What was a joyful gathering with entertainment and tradition on her home planet of Ginaz seemed a completely different affair when she arrived on Giedi Prime to become one with her husband’s house.

The formation of an alliance through marriage was something that had always happened.
Two powerful houses, a marriage, an alliance that secured bloodlines in exchange for power and alliances.
That was all there was to it, yet the fact that it was the House of Harkonnen had unsettled her upon receiving the news.
This is Going to Hurt
Pairing(s): Peter McVries x Reader, Past Ray Garraty x Reader
Summary: He was dead. Your lifelong best friend, and the man you were supposed to marry was shot like a dog during a stormy night. And someone else lived. Someone who selfishly inserts himself into you and Ginnie's lives after The Long Walk. If he is going to stay anywhere near you, you'd make his life a living hell. He shouldn't be the one trying his hardest to fight for a smile from you. He shouldn't even be standing where the love of your life had stood...so why is he?
Warning(s): Spoilers for The Long Walk, swearing, descriptions of grief, handjobs, and unprotected sex.
As usual, I saw the movie, got hyper-fixated, and formed an idea in my head that wouldn't go away unless if I wrote it down. I hope that everyone (the whole two characters from the movie I used) was written in character, and also the pacing isn't rushed. I also didn't focus too much on how the effects of the movie would integrate into the aftermath of it solely because I wanted to focus more on the emotional aspects. We love Ray Garraty haunting the narrative 🥰. Shoutout to @twilightleviathan for agreeing that McVries is one of the best guys in the movie to date.

i think Pope is a little freak who gets hard at the most mundane things you do. he can’t help himself :((
you’re behind him on the bed, rubbing at his tense shoulders bc he’s been really stressed lately. “you feelin’ better baby?” you ask from behind, getting a shaky yeahh from him. when u finally turn to face him he’s opening his eyes to the tent in his sweats. you’ve got an amused smile on ur face, “what’s got you so excited??” you say before giving him a lil kiss :3
you’re in your laziest outfit: a hair dye stained shirt, his boxers hanging on u loosely, mismatched patterned socks while making a small lunch. he’s literally just woken up from a nap yet he’s stiff as hell watching u move in your shared kitchen. could it be the morning wood? the way his boxers hang off your body in a way he can tell u have nothing else on under em? you just excite him.
he’s coming behind you and burying his face in your neck, and his dick is the first thing that alerts you. “hi baby,” you coo as he rubs at your stomach. “you…need something from me?” “no..maybe, i think it’s cause i just woke up i’m sorry.” it’s ok babyboy!!
he watches from the other side of the couch as you fold laundry, eyes locked on whatever’s on the tv. maybe it’s something maternal about it, or the domesticity of you folding his clothes neatly. he sighs shakily, palming himself between his thighs as he watches u with those big needy eyes.
when you feel his gaze you look over, smiling bashfully at the display he doesn’t try to hide. “you ok honey?” you don’t stop at your task. “mhm…i’m sorry you’re just so…pretty.” “it’s ok. i’ll help you when i’m done, okay?” he just loves his lady so much :((
it goes without saying that you guys have sex probably 3-5 times a week because of this little problem.

Chapter 1: A Blue Dance
Can we please stop making virgin/innocent readers act like literal toddlers. Thanks.
Virgins still have a general if not very clear concept of how sex works, we're not fucking idiots.❤️ And stop making "bookworm!" Readers only read smut, that's not book worm, thats smut addict. You guys are so annoying. "Oh it hurts! It won't fit!" *Sob sob sob* "you're so pure, I don't want to ruin you" Actually shut the fuck up. Virgin doesn't mean stupid baby who has no basic or full concept of human anatomy.
-Saying as a virgin who knows more about sex than most people in my state and have never attended sex ed.
Innocent reader in general makes me mad because literally anyone over the age of 13 has a general understanding of sex unless you're literally sheltered with no access to the internet and that's neglect. Stop promoting age play even if it's unintentional, it's disgusting and misogynistic. Stop making virgins sound brain dead just because they haven't had sex. And it is that serious because people are gonna think that's how we act in person.
AND STOP ASSOCIATING VIRGINS WITH CHRISTIANITY. You guys are so fucking weird and not in a good way. Do I know this is mean? Yes. Do I care? No, because most of you are in your late 20's-30's typing up this shit and should know the difference between realistic first time and the misogynistic expectations first time. Also virgins masterbate, so I don't wanna hear "what would you know!"
do you ever see a man so beautiful you want to burst into tears

Like so many other young women, Y/N had spied the ad in the Gazette early one November morning:
SURGEON SEEKING SECRETARY. MUST BE WELL-LETTERED, PROFICIENT IN ARITHMETIC, BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES ESP. THOSE RELATING TO HUMAN EVOLUTION. INQUIRE AT 37 DURHAM.
The tone was brief, clipped, direct. No room for interpretation nor for negotiation. It struck her as a reflection of the man himself, whoever he may be. But Y/N can appreciate directness: yes, better a boss who knows exactly what he wants from his employee than a fool liable to change his mind on a whim.
She inquired the next day, just after dawn - hoping to make a good first impression with her punctuality. It seemed that every other eligible secretary in London had the same idea: the line snaked down the sidewalk leading up to the dark brick townhouse, spilling into the well-kept street beyond. Reluctantly, she took her place behind a few dozen other bright young women, clicking her tongue as her skirts dragged through the muddy water and soaked into her boots.
After an hour, the line was to the door. Every so often, she’d glance up from her novel to assess the progress. Finally, right on the brink of a devastating cliffhanger, a butler had ushered her in.
The house was dark, but not foreboding. Everything was rich and warm - from the tapestry beneath her soggy boots to the crimson panelling of the walls. Tucking the book into her bag, she followed the older man up a flight of stairs to what seemed to be an office. The fellow didn’t so much as speak as he rapped once and pushed open the heavy wooden door.
Wordlessly, she nodded her thanks and stepped through.
The doctor stood at his desk, back turned to her. As he shifted his posture to peer closer at a particular document against the faint grey light of the window, she watched as the broad muscles of his back shifted beneath a woolen brown waistcoat.
The air held a faint smell of something earthy and narcotic.
“Name?”
“Y/N Y/L/N, sir.”
“Dr. Patrick Sumner.”
“Pleasure, sir.”
“Your interest in the role?”
She paused, taken aback by the question. She’d been ready to discuss her experience in dictation and relevant references from her time as a governess.
“Er-”
“Yes?”
“Well, I have been so far unable to study medicine. I figured this might be an interesting alternative.”
Sumner turned at that.
He met her with crystalline eyes and a probing gaze, as if he were trying to peer through her very skin to find the truth underneath. His dark blond hair was combed nearly back and he sported just a hint of a russet beard. A bit young, to be a physician.
“You’d wish to become a surgeon?”
“Well, yes, sir. If I could.”
“Why?” He sounded almost amused.
“To be of service to others. Take care of them, I mean.”
He sighed, faintly, like the answer disappointed him.
“And,” she hesitated, adjusting her stance, breathing deep against the confines of her corset. “I have a certain fascination with human anatomy. Or - well, any anatomy, really. Science - that is to say, the processes of life. How we function. How we came to be what we are.”
He nodded once.
“You’re a Darwinist?”
“Possibly. Er, yes.” She stumbled on the words, unsure of how honest to be. “Until someone proves him wrong.”
He nods at that. “You’ve studied science, then?”
“Yes, sir. The fundamentals at school, the rest on my own.”
“Hm. Below the elbow, the humerus is joined to…?”
“The radius and the ulna.”
“Conclusions on Pasteur?”
“We should all be washing our hands more.”
“Most effective treatment for a cholera outbreak?”
“Public sanitation.”
Sumner nodded again, slower this time.
“Alright. You’ll begin tomorrow.”
“I - really?”
“Yes. This,” he declared, gesturing to a tome sitting on the corner of his cluttered desk, “is an introductory volume on human anatomy. You’ll skim through it this afternoon in preparation. Be here at six.”
Y/N fought a grin, rubbing a hand down the length of her bodice.
“Yes, sir. Thank you.”
He betrayed nothing, attention already shifting to the pile of notes he’d been sorting through earlier.
“And let Yeats know to send the other girls home. That will be all.”
“I look forward to working together.”
He just hmed, non-committal.
It’s a little after dawn when Y/N arrives at the office for her first day.
Her satchel is stuffed with her best writing instruments and loose sheets of paper, as well as the half-devoured copy of Grey’s Anatomy she’d stayed up all night annotating. There is a bounce in her step: a desire to prove herself, maybe, but moreso the desire to learn something new in the company of a seasoned professional. This kind of education is nearly impossible for a young woman to receive, Y/N knows, so even if it never leads to anything real, she refuses to squander it.
And if the young doctor is handsome, well… that’s just a bonus.
Yeats lets her in, guides her back up the stairs as if she could possibly have forgotten the route between yesterday and this morning. Again, he is silent, and again, he raps just once before allowing her through.
“Miss Y/L/N,” Sumner calls out. “On time. That’s promising.”
He’s seated at the desk, midway through closing a drawer. There are faint bags under his eyes - not dark enough to alarm, but enough to wonder if he’d gotten more than a few hours’ rest.
“Of course, sir. I take the work seriously.”
“Good. You’ll begin by dictating my general correspondence. I’ve a presentation on internal medicine coming up at the Royal Society, but my ongoing research is into the evolution of specific physical traits in humans. I trust you’ve had a look through the book?”
He jumps from thought to thought so quickly that it takes Y/N half a second just to register his words.
“Ah - yes, sir. Nearly finished it.”
“Excellent. You may use my writing materials, unless you’ve brought your own. Please, sit.”
She crosses the small room in a few quick steps, setting her bag down onto the floor beside the spare wooden chair.
“I will begin with a general greeting to the symposium. Then, I’ll have you proofread my notes for errors. Ready?”
She dips her nib into the inkwell hurriedly, scratches out a little test on a scrap of paper.
“Yes, sir.”
-
The first week passes in a comfortable blur.
Y/N arrives every weekday morning at the same time, bright and early. Yeats shows her in, she takes a moment to get settled, and immediately launches into her list of tasks. It’s mostly administrative work, organizing files, taking down dictation, cross-referencing his research… after a while, it’s almost meditative.
No one speaks unless there’s something to say.
Most days are filled only by the sound of scribbling notes and whatever chaos makes its way through the third-floor windows from the busy street below. Around two, the maid comes in with a tray of tea. They pause to drink - no more than a few minutes - and return to business shortly after.
And when there’s a lull in the work, Sumner is surprisingly generous with his time and expertise, allowing her a few hours here and there to silently peruse his extensive medical library. When she has questions, he answers them. When she has opinions, he urges her to voice them.
He treats her with a respect that feels entirely unfamiliar - as though he values her input, as though he genuinely regards her as an equal. When she’d told him of her intention to apply for medical school regardless of their ban on female students, he’d only praised her tenacity and offered to pen the letter of recommendation.
Together, they make an effective team.
In the easy silences, though, she doesn’t miss the way his knee bounces with anxious energy or the way his hands tremble when he stares off into space. The clench of his sharp jaw, the grinding of teeth. The swollen purple of his underyes. How he stiffens sometimes when the church bell rings out loud and sudden at noon.
Of course, Sumner always notices her noticing - he’s perceptive, incredibly so - but neither of them mention it. If there is a story to tell about the pain of his past, she trusts he will tell it in good time.
If not, well… she doesn’t mind a little mystery.
One afternoon, over endless stacks of anatomical sketches, Sumner asks the question. “I mean no offense, of course, but why are you so insistent on studying this material if you know the odds of succeeding are so slim?”
Y/N grits her teeth, trying not to let the words visibly affect her. It’s not the first time she’s been interrogated for having passions and she knows it won’t be the last.
“I do intend to pursue medicine, sir, but whether or not my work is acknowledged, I know it has merit regardless. There is value in knowing a thing just for the sake of it. Curiosity is what makes us human, anyway - that, of course, and care for each other.”
“Care?” His brow is knitted tight.
“Yes.”
“Not superior intelligence? Language? Complex social organization?”
“I mean -”
“Humanity is care? The society in which you lives deems you a second-class citizen and yet you somehow believe our defining trait is care?”
“Well, it’s certainly more than just logic and reason.” She crosses her arms, quite defensive at the accusation. Who is he to tell her how to feel?
“Beasts feel affection and pain, just as we do. And believe me, I have seen more cruelty at the hands of men than any wild animal. What’s so unique about that?”
She shakes her head, peering out the grimy window to the bustling avenue below.
“We are animals, Dr. Sumner. We may choose to act against our better natures, but that is the decision of the individual - not the rule of the herd. We care for the weakest among us and honour our dead with flowers and songs and spend precious resources on protecting the old and sick. That is humanity, sir.”
She pauses.
“And,” Y/N continues, rising to her feet. “I have to believe that care will prevail. Perhaps we are cruel today, but I must believe that it won’t be so tomorrow. What is the alternative - submission? Depression? Acceptance?”
“This is what you understood of Darwin?”
In the street, people dodge carriages and each other as they weave between market stalls and lampposts. A mother tugs on her daughter’s hand as she reaches for a shiny apple. A paper boy calls out some tragic headline.
In the foggy distance, a bell chimes.
“No,” she exhales, grinding her jaw. “No, this is what I understand of our world. There is more to us than hard science and pure reason. Emotions, desires, fears - everything is linked to everything else. To insist that cognitive function or social organization is the hallmark of evolution misses the point entirely. We are far more than just our bodies or brains - we are the products of processes, Dr. Sumner. Infinite interlinked processes. I’d have thought you understood that, being a man of science.”
The doctor is silent.
When she turns from the window to meet his gaze, there is something profound in it that greets her.
“You certainly… know what you’re talking about, Miss Y/L/N.”
He concedes the argument like it’s a novelty.
“Well, thank you,” she hums, confused and yet more than a little proud.
“I mean it. In another life, you would have been a generational scholar.”
She lets the pang of sorrow wash over her like a wave - there and gone.
“And your passion is important. Lose it and you have nothing.”
The wind whistles through the little hole in the glass. The pair regard each other in relative silence, taking in the flushed cheeks and darkened eyes and battle-ready stances.
“Are you passionate about your work, Dr. Sumner?”
He nearly opens his mouth to speak. Shifts his posture. Drags his eyes from her own, draws them down towards the tips of his polished boots.
“We’ll finish this tomorrow. That’s quite enough for one afternoon.”
A week or so into their partnership, Y/N gives into curiosity.
She’s surmised that he’s Irish, but the brogue is well-hidden behind the thick fog of his English accent. Clearly, he is unwed - or if he is married, the wife must live somewhere else, as there is no indication of any woman in this residence.
No ring on his fourth finger.
There is also no family to speak of - no children running through the halls, no parents or siblings calling on him during the long workdays. No, it seems to just be her and Sumner and his endless piles of paperwork.
“You aren’t married, sir?”
She’s seated at the small writing desk to the left of his own, poring meticulously over a thick stack of the day’s mail. Normally, she’d think twice about bothering him with anything unrelated to the work at hand, but he’s made it clear that he trusts her judgment and respects her skill, so one little innocuous question couldn’t hurt.
Right?
“No,” comes the gruff reply. “And make sure that the boys at King’s all give you their replies in writing - I won’t have a repeat of last month.”
“Noted. But why not?”
“No time for a wife. Did Dr. Richards give you a date for the symposium this year?”
“Decemebr 19th. How much of your time do you imagine a wife would take up?”
“Too much. Your notes on Lamarck?”
“Top left drawer. But surely, a wife would only serve to make your life easier?”
“In what way would she make my life easier? I don’t see them here.”
“Look under Mr. Collins’ records. And I don’t know, to give you moral support, or… to manage your household? Take over your correspondence, all that.”
“Ah, found them.” He looks up at her, spell broken. “But that’s what you’re here for. Are you trying to quit on me so soon?”
“Of course not,” she smiles, fighting the urge to laugh at his panicked expression. “But there must be a reason men keep marrying women, no? Why, if not to make life better?”
“Hm.” He mulls it over. “Indeed. I can think of many reasons, but none of them apply to me.”
She nods in agreement, ready to drop the subject.
“Of course, you’re hardly the first to raise the question.” Sumner turns his body to face her properly, train of thought thoroughly derailed.
“No, I imagine I’m not.”
“The boys at the Society bring it up every time I see them. They think it’d lend me a certain legitimacy, make me seem more civilized. More serious.”
She does laugh at this.
“Frankly,” he continues, almost smirking, “they can’t fathom living as I do, forgoing both matrimony and the paid company of women…”
He trails off as he realizes what he’s said.
“I must apologize, Miss Y/L/N. That was entirely inappropriate of me to - ”
“No! It’s alright, of course, I know what you meant.”
“You… do?”
The skin of her neck burns.
“Oh, God, no! Not that I, er… know firsthand, or anything of the sort.”
“Of course not.”
“No, of course not. Just to say that I know what sex is.”
He chokes on a cough. She nearly hurls.
“From the literature! Reproductive science - I, Christ - I meant - ”
“I know what you meant.”
“Not from - no, that would be -”
“Yes, that would be…”
“Right.”
“Precisely.”
“Mhm… well, I’ll just - I’ll go alphabetize the patient records.”
She stands abruptly, wincing as the chair screeches against the floorboards.
“I thought you’d done them yesterday?”
“No harm in doing it twice!” she calls over her shoulder.
Their next real debate comes three weeks later.
The energy between them is already palpable, swelling in intensity: lingering brushes of a finger against a palm during an exchange of documents. Soft glances that endure just a moment too long. The tiniest transgressions, really, but each one feels immense. Meaningful.
Intoxicating.
That morning, they’d spent hours revising his research into competition rituals between eligible males, but now, in the rainy gloom of the late afternoon, both parties have agreed that a moment of levity is sorely needed. Sumner’s poured them each a dram of brandy, had Yeats light a fire in the hearth. He leans against it, poking at the embers and sipping occasionally from his glass.
“So you disagree with Darwin? My, my.”
“No! I agree with him on many points, but his theory of sexual selection is flawed.” She offers the critique freely, emboldened by both the sweet alcohol and his encouragement of her talents.
“In what sense?”
“He argues that males drive natural selection through competition for female attention. But surely, it is the other way around: females, through their selective criteria, are the true propellers of evolution.”
“Is that not a rewording of the same principle?”
“No! Think about it - Darwin writes as though we are silly girls waiting to be wooed by nothing more than a pretty face. But that isn’t so: women are pragmatic and rational as well as just emotional.”
“But he is writing about animals, Miss Y/L/N, not women.”
“Humans are animals. Or did you miss that chapter?” she counters, leaning back in the velvet settee.
Sumner barks a good-natured laugh.
“Right you are. But humans are also heavily influenced by culture, are we not? It stands to reason that our customs and instincts are thus unique compared to our beastly cousins.”
“Of course,” she nods, swallowing the last of the amber liquor. “And that is why I argue that Mr. Darwin’s writings are influenced by his opinions on women.”
“Well, I suppose no scholar is exempt from cultural influence.”
“No. We believe women to be dull and frivolous, so the research keeps proving it.”
He hums at that, nodding slowly, like he’s watching puzzle pieces fall into place in real time.
“What do you think, Dr. Sumner?”
“I think I agree with you.”
“Oh.”
He grins, warm and amused. “You weren’t expecting me to?”
“I don’t know. I’m not used to men listening when I speak.” She pauses, eyes going wide. “Forgive me, sir. I’m afraid the brandy’s gone right to my head.”
At this, he chuckles.
“No apologies necessary. No, you speak with an experience that I lack, Miss Y/L/N.”
She cocks a brow, leaning forward in her seat. “What experience is that?”
“You are a woman.” He says it simply, obviously. “Darwin and myself are not. You know better than we what a female looks for in a mate. What she finds attractive, what… appeals to her.”
Y/N nods, brushing past the flush of warmth that floods her belly. “Er, yes. I suppose that’s true.”
“I wonder if you would humour me. You’re more of a research assistant, now, anyway.”
“With what?”
Sumner gestures to the liquor. She nods. He reaches over to top up her drink, uncapping the expensive decanter.
“Tell me what it is that women seek in a potential husband.”
“In general?”
“Yes.”
“Hm.” She reflects on the question. What do women want? “Well, firstly, I suppose it depends somewhat on financial circumstance. And then, he must also be gentle - possess a good temper, a fair sense of justice.”
The doctor finally joins her on the divan. The heat of his fire-warmed body radiates through the cotton of his sleeves. His sudden presence is weighty, tangible: he perches beside her like it means something.
“And what of physical appearance?”
“Ah. Well, it’s better if he’s handsome, but that is secondary.” He quirks a brow. She elaborates: “Her wages - if she is employed - will default to him after marriage, and if he ends up being cruel, she cannot easily escape. So these things are important.”
“I see. So it’s culture, rather than nature.”
“Exactly. What would we look for if we were all on equal footing, I wonder?”
He nods, excitedly, like he’s borne witness to a revelation, reaching over for a loose sheet of paper from the low table. He begins scribbling - but then pauses a moment, expectant.
“Well?”
“Well, what?”
“What would women look for?”
“Oh.” She pauses. “I cannot speak for us all, sir.”
“Speak for yourself, then.” He looks up at her, registers her shock. Reconsiders his words. “That is, if you’re comfortable.”
Y/N hesitates. This close, Sumner smells of herbal tinctures and dark liquor. The perfume of him is intoxicating, seeping into the air around her, dizzying and magnetic.
“Dr. Sumner - “
“Please. It will prove useful to our research.”
Our research - the shared pronoun fills her with pride.
“Well…” she concedes, looking anywhere but his icy eyes. Fixes on his hands. “I suppose I like an intellectual. Er, a kind man, one who reads - “
“No,” he interjects. “Physical traits, Miss Y/L/N.”
“A hint of a beard.” Y/N offers it involuntarily - almost an intrusive thought. She looks up at him. “Rough hands. A strong nose.”
His pen stills.
“I like… Sorry, I just - ” The sudden swell of heat in the room has become intolerable. His knee brushes her own as she bolts up, strides over to the window and cracks it open to let the foggy air fill the office. The breeze on her flushed skin is glacial. It shocks her to life.
“My apologies, Miss Y/L/N. I’ve overwhelmed you.”
“Right,” she mumbles, face turned to the coolness of the afternoon. “I’m not overwhelmed.”
“We’ll stop there - ”
“No.” She turns to him, resolute in her conviction. “Continue.”
“Alright.” Sumner nods. “This is all entirely confidential.”
“I know.”
“Right - so forget marriage. Think of men in general: what do you consider attractive?”
Y/N forces a steady breath. Grips the windowsill with white knuckles. All or nothing.
“Sometimes, on the way here, I cut through the docks to see the ships come in. And… ah, well, when the weather's good, the dock workers roll up their sleeves to… show off their arms. Occasionally, they do away with shirts entirely. I watch them. We all do. I watch how their muscles move. And I like the look of a man who is strong from daily labour.”
He nods, recording the words.
She continues, letting the attributes come like sordid confessions.
“I like it when a man is taller than me. Not towering - just enough. It’s good when they dress well, when they present themselves tidily, but there is something to be said for scruff, for scars and disheveled hair. An appearance that hints at subdued ferality.”
Sumner swallows. She watches the line of his throat bob.
A few strands of his own hair have fallen free from the combed-back locks, sweeping down into his eyes in little swirls that suggest natural curls. The barest hint of a five o'clock shadow dusts the length of his pale jaw. She looks down at his large hands, how they cover most of the paper in their grip, how they’re littered with little scrapes and scar tissue.
Christ.
“Beyond that, Dr. Sumner, I… I can’t say I’ve ever seen much of a man’s body outside of medical textbooks. I have no other conclusions.”
He nods, gaze still fixed on his notes.
“Thank you, Miss Y/L/N.”
“I hope you can use some of that?”
“Yes,” he replies, a tad too quickly. “Yes, I certainly will.”
In the following months, the unspoken tension grows difficult to navigate.
Their mutual respect prevents anyone from crossing any lines, of course - it’s easy enough to suppress the effects of a burgeoning attraction in a professional environment when the work is of great importance. And besides, all this discussion of human sexuality and anatomy was bound to come up in a scientific setting.
But she can no longer ignore the way Sumner looks at her when he thinks she’s zeroed in on the book in her lap, the intensity and hunger burning through her flesh like an arrow aflame. In truth, her mind is often too muddled to concentrate on the words, but she keeps up the charade - as if she could somehow throw him off, escape the enormity of his attention.
As if it could ever make any difference.
The icy brush of his gaze scrapes along her shoulderblades like a glacier, melting and soaking as it goes. It feels, sometimes, like he can see right down to the very bones shifting underneath her flushed skin. Like he can hear the way her heart throbs when his attention is turned to her.
They orbit each other with caution: two heavenly bodies resisting a collision course into a blazing sun. Conversations become shorter, more clipped. The silence grows uneasy and lingers relentlessly. She won’t do anything to jeopardize this job, that much is certain. But, still…
Their talks of sexuality and attraction stay with her long after she’s left the office at the end of the day, long after she’s gone home and to bed. The glide of his coarse fingers over lines and lines of ink… The stretch of his broad back as he reaches for a tome on the highest shelf of the library… The way she catches his gaze slipping down to her lips when she speaks and back up to her eyes.
On a rainy afternoon in the library - seated cross-legged on the silk divan, tome of anthropological reports balanced carefully on her lap - Y/N breaks the silence.
“Dr. Sumner.”
“Hm?”
“Why are you so interested in evolution?”
He pauses. Sets his pen down gently onto the desk.
“Have I ever told you of my life prior to this?”
She shakes her head.
“I was a surgeon on a whaling ship.” He takes in the look of shock on her face. Smiles. “And before that, in the military.”
“I would never have assumed.”
“No, it’s not exactly traditional, is it? But, suffice it to say… I experienced many, ah, hardships therein. I witnessed suffering on a scale I had previously thought unimaginable. Even suffered myself a fair bit. I witnessed such cruelty at the hands of men, such greed and evil. And all the while, I thought to myself: there had to be a reason for it, surely? Or else, what could explain such acts?”
Y/N isn’t sure what to say. As much as she’d wondered about his mysterious past, she never would have guessed at such trauma. It does explain the jumpiness, though, the dark circles, the slight hobble when he walks…
He continues:
“And then, Darwin goes and publishes his book and the world changes overnight. Suddenly, the answers seem within reach. So, at first, I took an interest to violence and cruelty for cruelty’s sake. But, gradually, your influence has come to spark my interest in a wider breadth of social traits: competition, kinship, sexuality… all of it. What did you call it? Infinite interlinked processes.”
She nods. “So this is personal to you.”
“Yes, I suppose it is,” he hums, lost in thought. “It would seem it’s all very personal to you, too. I admire that.”
“Thank you.”
He shuts his notebook with a quiet thump, turning his full attention to her.
“Having worked with me for some months, now, I wonder what your specialty would be.”
“If I were a proper surgeon, you mean?”
He nods, and she lets her own book fall closed, reflecting on all she’s learned in the good doctor’s company.
“Well, I’d say that I am interested in the evolution and experience of women.”
“Indeed. But more precisely?”
She does try to fight the heat creeping up her cheeks, reminds herself that she is a scientist, first and foremost, and nothing scientific can ever be truly explicit.
“Well, it would seem that female sexuality is a rather overlooked subject.”
“But you and I are researching the very thing, are we not?”
Y/N hesitates before committing to speech. “No, Dr. Sumner. Not animal mating rituals. I mean pleasure. In humans. Women.”
He leans forward in his seat, planting two forearms on the messy papers before him. “Pleasure?”
She straightens her spine, forcing herself to meet his gaze. “Yes.”
“Explain.” It feels like an interrogation, the way he’s studying her across the small room from behind his desk.
Everything is charged. No one dares to acknowledge it.
“Well, think of biology. Why is it that women can achieve sexual satisfaction without the intention of impregnation? Without penetration at all? Why are we not deemed sexual creatures in the way men are when our very bodies are the ones designed to enjoy pleasure for pleasure’s sake?”
“Why, indeed.”
Sumner exhales - slow, restrained.
“And which parts of the female antomy are you referring to, specifically?”
“You know.”
“I do.”
A rush of heat floods her core.
“But,” he continues. “You’re a scientist, aren’t you? You must be able to say the words without shame.”
“The clitoris.”
“Yes.”
They study each other, both trying to gauge the truth buried at the heart of the conversation.
“Where else?”
“The breasts.”
“Mm. And?”
“I - I’m not sure.”
She can see his thighs shifting under the desk.
“No?”
“Some women say there’s a place… inside that can induce… er…”
“Climax.”
“Yes.”
“Inside where?”
Her fingers dig deep into the crinoline folds of her skirts.
“The body.”
He tsks. “You must name it. Or do you truly not know?”
“I can’t say it.”
“I'm sure you can.”
Another standoff.
And then, softly. “The vagina.”
“Yes - though, most do not call it that. No, you’re more likely to hear it as cunt, aren't you?”
She can’t quite believe the filthy words falling from the doctor’s mouth.
But he’s relentless: “And you don’t know where this spot is?”
“No, sir.”
“How is that?”
“Suppose my fingers aren’t long enough.”
The reply leaves her mouth before her brain has a chance to approve.
And quite suddenly, they both understand that there is no going back.
“Show me.”
The command is so faint she’s almost convinced she’s hallucinated it.
But he follows it up with a look of such devastating want and suddenly she finds herself reaching for the hem of her skirts. Draws them up, baring to him the soft skin of her legs and thighs, pausing right before her hips.
Sumner looks bewitched. His pupils are blown, drowning out all the pale Arctic blue she’s come to love. His fingers twitch against the desk as if he’s fighting every urge to leap over it.
“Define for me the scientific method, Miss Y/L/N.”
“A series of falsifiable observations designed to produce a hypothesis.”
“Good. Here is yours: I hypothesize that you can reach climax without my assistance.”
Her breath hitches and her hand stills.
“Go on. Prove it to me.”
Y/N parts her legs. The cool air from the window hits her with a jolt. Sumner sucks in a long draw of his tobacco pipe. Reclines in his seat. Watches in rapt, cocky attention.
Slowly, cruelly, she reaches a pointer finger down to the bundle of nerves at the apex of her thighs. A sharp sigh of relief escapes her lips before she can prevent it. She rubs at herself in lazy circles, letting her body indulge in the utterly illicit bliss of it all.
The doctor is still watching her: this she knows. Even with her eyes screwed shut, she knows. The way his inhalations catch in time with the movements of her fingers, with the writhing of her hips, the jolts of her chest - it’s unmistakable.
“Your observation, Miss Y/L/N?” His voice is teetering on wrecked.
“Feels good,” she gasps. “Very good, sir.”
“You spoke of breasts, but haven’t touched them. Is that not central to the experiment?”
“Corset’s - ah - too tight. Can’t do that alone.”
“How unfortunate. I find I cannot stop picturing them.”
Y/N whimpers. “Please…”
“Please, what?”
“Just want you to touch me, just want to - fuck…”
“Language, girl. S’not fucking, it’s intercourse. We’re scientists, or did you forget that with your hands between your legs?”
“S-sorry,” she bites out, rubbing harder, letting a free hand travel up to her collarbone.
“No harm done. But if you can prove your hypothesis, I’ll touch you any way you’d like.”
Y/N whines again. She doesn’t have to look down to know that she’s dripping onto the silk of the divan. Being watched like this is a completely novel thrill - dangerous, inebriating. She’s never felt so desired in her life, so clouded by lust. A familiar coil begins to build in her stomach.
“M’gonna - Patrick, please, I’m going to - “
“Yes, I was rather hoping you would.”
Through half-shut eyes, she watches as he begins to palm himself over the coarse fabric of his trousers. The thought of pleasing him, of reducing this acclaimed man of science to a wretched animal sends her mind spiralling. Suddenly, there is nothing more urgent on this earth than earning his praise.
“C- can I?”
“Go on, Y/N, show me. Make me proud.”
The thread snaps and she comes with a wrecked cry.
Sumner groans when she throws her head back, bares her throat to him, clutches desperately at loose notes and heavy skirts and gilded embroidery - anything to stabilize her.
Before she can even regain her senses, she hears the screech of his chair against the hardwood and feels his hands gripping at her knees, running up and down the length of her bare flesh. He presses a reverent kiss to the skin of her thigh, causing her to twitch towards him.
“What do you want, Miss Y/L/N?”
“Anything,” she hiccups, looking down at him with half-lidded eyes. This time, when she feels that habitual urge to run her fingers through his hair with a free hand, she doesn’t fight it. His eyes fly shut at the feeling, and he groans at the way she thumbs the locks and caresses his temple in adoration.
“Up to me, then? I can do as I please?”
She nods. “Anything.”
“Can you stand?”
She shakes her head.
“Too bad.”
Sumner hauls her up onto two lazy feet, steadies her with a firm grip on the waist. She folds her arms around his neck, leaning into him while he begins unfastening the hooks of her bodice. All the while, he kisses down the length of her jaw, whispering sweet praise into her ear as she sighs.
When the last hook is released, he tugs the gown from her body, urgently, pushing it down onto the carpet and leaving her in nothing but a thin cotton shift. The air from the window chills her, whips at her, renders the whole thing translucent. He watches her mindlessly, as if in a trance.
“Show me,” he asks again, and the garment is on the floor in seconds. And then: “Lie back.”
She obliges. He kneels before her, eyes nearly black.
“Do you know what I’m about to do?”
“I - I think so, yes.”
“I’m going to taste you. Yes?”
She nods feverishly, fingers tangling back into the messy dark blonde of his curls.
And then his mouth is on her, and she screams.
Her body is still terribly sensitive, so when he licks a stripe up the length of her, she worries that it might be over before it even begins. Sumner - ever the dedicated scientist - commits to exploring her body, experimenting with different pressures and rhythms.
It’s dizzying, the way he devours her. His methodology is cruel and precise, designed to find the perfect combination of factors to drive her violently over the edge. When his large hands wander upwards, thumbing and stroking and groping at her aching breasts, she keens with a kick of her hips up onto his mouth, practically riding his chin. When the swell of overwhelming pleasure crests a little too high, she tries in vain to shut her legs.
He groans - as if the ecstasy were a shared thing between them - and retracts his hands to spread her thighs apart as far as they go. She protests and he lands a soft slap to her clit.
“You don’t close these legs, Y/N,” he pants against her core, gazing up through blown pupils. “You don’t hide a fucking thing. I won’t ask again.”
“Patrick,” she whines. His gaze is brutal.
“You want to come, sweetheart?” She nods. “Then be quiet and take it.”
He doesn’t move until her frantic yes, yes, okay, yes, I’m sorry, I -
His lips close around the bundle of nerves and her eyes roll back. Everything is too much: the overstimulation, the iron grip of his hands into the flesh of her thighs, the silken smoothness of the divan against her bare skin, the crackling of embers in the hearth, the scent of brandy and old books carried on the frigid breeze, the relentless build of an incoming climax …
Sumner withdraws, standing to his full height before joining her on the divan.
She whines, confused.
“Come.” He gestures to his lap. “Get comfortable.”
She crawls onto him, not missing the way his stare lingers on the bare curves of her body. He takes her by the hips, setting her down onto his thighs, back pressed into his chest. Her legs widen of their own accord, and he hums his approval against her hair.
His hand finds her core again, tracing over the soft skin with soaked fingers. She shivers at the feeling, whimpers when she feels the pressure of a digit pushing slowly into her. With a free hand, he wraps an arm around her waist to pin her body against his own.
“How’s that? S’that good?”
“Yes - fuck, yes, so good, it’s - ”
“Have you ever had a man do this for you, Y/N?”
“N- no, Dr. Sumner, never - ”
“Patrick. You call me Patrick when I’m fucking you on my lap. It’s the least you can do, no?”
“Yes.”
“And what do you think - are my fingers long enough? Hm?”
If she were more lucid, she’d berate him for teasing her at a time like this - but she isn’t, so the best she can manage is another pathetic whine. Her hips roll against his fingers, frantically searching for a release that just won’t come.
“Patrick, can you - ah - “
“Use your words.”
He curls his pointer and she gasps, throwing her head back against his shoulder.
“Could you - ”
“I can do anything, sweetheart. Speak up.”
“Please, could you fuck me?”
His fingers stutter against her walls, coming to a standstill.
“Y/N…”
“Please, I mean it, I really mean it, I - ” she chokes on the sob of a half-achieved orgasm. “I need it.”
He pulls his hands from her and she nearly cries. The thought of being left like this, so wanting and aching and hungry is too much. A wave of panic seizes her throat before she feels Patrick tapping at her hips to turn around and straddle him. On wobbly legs, she obliges.
His eyes are dark, as before, but there’s a hesitation in them.
A fear.
“Have you ever been fucked, Y/N?”
She shakes her head, eyes wide.
“And you’re certain?”
She nods again, frustrated tears gathering on her lashes.
“Please,” he begs, voice low and grave. “You must tell me that this is what you want.”
“Yes. I wouldn’t have asked you otherwise.”
Her answer is unsatisfactory. He leans his forehead against her own, hands coming to rest on the base of her spine.
“Just tell me again, please, Y/N. Please.”
She pulls away, watches him for a moment, studying the way his brows furrow and his blown pupils zero in on her own. He’s looking for any hint of trepidation, for the slightest presence of doubt.
He won’t find it.
“This is what I want.”
His breath catches on a sigh. “It is?”
She nods slowly, watching his lips.
“F-fuck - “ He fumbles wildly with his belt and button, shoving the undergarments down with no care for decorum. Y/N reaches down to touch him and his breath stops in his throat.
“Have you ever - god - even seen a man nude, Y/N?” She finds it endearing, the way he tries to preserve his air of neutral objectivity even with her hands wrapped around him.
“No, Patrick,” she mumbles, kissing at his jaw. “I’ve never seen a real cock.”
He twitches in her hand.
“Oh, you like knowing you’re the first?”
“Yes, I do.”
“But I haven’t let you in, yet, have I?”
“You will, sweetheart. You’re dripping onto my trousers.” His grin is cocky and eager.
She just whimpers as she rolls her hips against him, hissing at the heat and friction, fingers working at the fastenings of his waistcoat. He gets the message, ripping the last buttons off in his haste. She tugs at the hem of his shirt, yanking it from his waistband and over his head.
Finally chest to chest, the scientists take a moment to breathe. He holds her neck in place, forcing eye contact.
“You must tell me if it hurts - look at me. You will tell me if it hurts.”
“Of course, Patrick.”
“Go slow. We have all the time in the world, yeah?”
She nods, breathes deep, lowers herself down onto him.
They both cry out.
The sting is overwhelming for a brief moment, her body still debating what to do with the foreign intrusion. But he’s worked her properly, gotten her well and truly ready, and before she even rises to ride him, the pain has morphed into pressure.
Patrick groans, gripping her ass as if to ground himself in reality.
“Y- you don’t know how good that feels, Y/N. You’ve got no idea,” he mutters against her flushed cheek. “No idea how good you take it.”
She can’t speak, not yet. He’s in her stomach, in her throat, in her body - she’s so full of him, it’s hard to remember what it used to feel like without. Tentatively, she lets her hips fall to take him deeper. The pressure is turning to pleasure - slowly, gradually, easily.
And Patrick doesn’t rush her. Just lets her guide the pace, follows her lead, gives her the time to explore the sensation. Even though his instincts are screaming to pin her down and fuck her properly, he knows that this is hardly the occasion.
So, instead, he just mumbles words of adoration and watches her learn.
“That’s it, darling, you just keep on like that. Just take it, use me however you need.”
“It’s so good, Patrick, I can’t stop - “
“You’d better not.” He guides her through a heavy roll of the hips. “Oh, I would surely go mad - you could never be that cruel, depriving me of this perfect cunt…”
Without even realizing it, Y/N clenches down on him and he stutters.
“What? Cunt? S’that what you like? When I speak so crudely?”
“Yes - “
“Well, you’re a regular temptress, aren’t you? Who knew? Under all that decorum, all that grace - all this time, you were only ever hoping to end up on my cock?”
Clenching down again, she ups the pace, letting the thrill dictate a natural rhythm. He begins to match her, and even dares to take a breast in hand, rubbing a thumb over the tight bud. She keens, falling into him.
“Can’t even stay upright? What do you say, darling, shall I take over for you?”
“Please.”
“Ah, y'know I could never deny you a thing.”
In one movement, he has her flipped onto her back, settled softly into the cushions of the divan. Reclined like this - bare, lazy, shameless - she resembles any one of the defiant nudes hanging in the Louvre.
Before she even has a chance to beg, he’s inside her again, and she sighs in relief. He sets a sharp, frantic pace, unable to think of anything but the way she wraps so sweetly around him.
“Fuck - you’re so good, Patrick, so - ah! - good to me…”
The praise goes right to his head and before he can stop to think, he’s hunched over her, one arm bracing over her head as he continues thrusting.
“I love you,” he whispers, the words spilling from his lips like a reflex. “I love you. Please, can I - would you let me kiss you?”
She nods eagerly, watching as he eyes her mouth with a look gentle enough to make her stomach drop. It’s magnetic, the pull. She feels locked into a pantomime, a performance in which she already knows every line, every direction, every outcome - and it all ends with her whimpering beneath him.
“Yes.”
He closes the gap between them.
The kiss is so soft, at first, that the contact barely registers.
She can’t accept this reluctance, gripping the sides of his head and drawing him into her properly. A moment passes before Patrick is moaning into her mouth, hot and feral and desperate. She licks into him, drawing out the kiss, inviting him deeper and deeper into her body until no one can tell where one ends and the other begins.
Her climax comes without warning.
One moment, she’s lost in the bliss of his lips on hers and the next, she’s crying out with a desperation she didn’t think herself capable of. He doesn’t last much longer, the perfect clench of her too overwhelming. Just in time, he manages to pull out and empty himself on the warm skin of her stomach.
For a moment, the only sound in the room is uneven panting and the distant cry of gulls from the dockyard.
“Oh,” she mumbles, looking down at herself. “That’s what happens.”
“Yes,” he laughs, still breathless. “That’s what happens.”
Her mouth breaks into the fondest grin she’s ever offered and he kisses it again, long and slow.
“One moment,” he whispers against her lips before withdrawing completely, reaching for the pocket of his waistcoat. He returns with a handkerchief, wiping down the planes of her torso. She just hums, gasping when he (not-so-accidentally) brushes the underside of her breast.
After tucking himself in and doing up the waist of his trousers, he offers her his large cotton overshirt. She accepts, reveling in the overwhelming scent of him. Two fresh glasses of brandy are poured.
“Come, then, sweetheart. Sit a moment.”
Y/N crawls into his lap once again, settling into the heat and solidity of his chest. He hugs her close, draws her head into the crook of his neck while he traces the bones of her back.
“I hope you realize that I’m going to have to marry you,” he mumbles.
She pulls back, quirking a brow. “What, to preserve my honour?”
He snorts, still donning his incandescent grin.
“Well, that - and I love you. I won’t be parted from you.”
“Is that right?”
“Yes, indeed.”
“Hm. So convince me, then, in your own words, and I’ll consider it.”
"I feel like a male peacock performing a mating ritual."
She snickers at that. "So what, you're too proud to beg?"
There's not a hint of humour on his face when he replies: "No, miss, I most certainly am not."
"Then beg me, Patrick."
“Well, Y/N,” he begins, settling his thumbs into the crease above her parted thighs, gazing up at her in love-drunk reverence. “It seems I have come to worship you. I cannot stop - when I dream, I find myself rarely plagued by the night terrors that habitually take up residence in my mind. The… the blood, and the dying, and the agonies of what I have done… it has all come to pale in comparison against the sheer immensity of my affection for you. I adore you. I adore you. I am certain of it.”
Y/N kisses him, sweet and pliant and warm. Still, he continues against her lips:
“I have always respected you, but there can be no question now of my loving you. You deserve devotion, Miss Y/L/N. Nothing less. You deserve a mind to keep up with your own, a kindred spirit. A man only slightly taller, with a strong nose, just a hint of a beard - ”
She barks a laugh, drawing away from him as he grips her even tighter.
“You’re using my words against me!”
“Can’t help it if you were describing me, sweetheart.” He holds her down by the waist. Meets her eyes again. And then, much quieter: “Is that what you were doing? Thinking of me?”
Her skin flushes and she ducks into his neck as he preens.
“We have so much work to finish, Patrick,” she mumbles into his hair. He laughs again, easy and fond.
“Naturally. But I’d rather sit here a while and kiss you.”
Y/N doesn’t answer - she just melts into him and smiles in the dim glow of the fire.
