SOSA DOESN’T GET FRUSTRATED. at least not.. visibly. he’s a pushover with most, if not all of his friends and classmates. but math isn’t a friend nor a classmate. math’s the enemy, actually. and honestly, what the hell does calculus have to do with his culinary arts degree ?? he’s sitting in silence next to emory, when he finally speaks. “ ..i think i get it. ” he’s lying, he’s a liar. sosa just spaced out at the paper in front of him for the past five minutes and despite desperately trying to follow along, the dots refuse to connect. teeth bite the inside of his cheek and he can’t help but wonder if he should just drop the class altogether.
HE COULD EASILY BE DOING THIS ON THE CLOCK, getting paid to work on new and fresh ideas to sell at the bakery. but there’s something about home baking that feels different than at the bread basket. it probably has something to do with his homebody nature. he’s got ideas swirling in his head and it’s clear he’s having a hard time making a decision on which idea to go with. sosa glances up at the nearest person, clearing his throat to speak. “ excuse me ?? ” always so polite, sosa’s quick to continue on, “ lemme get your opinion on something. ” he nods to the citruses in front of him. “ would you say you’re more of an orange or a lemon person ?? ” why make your own decisions when you can get someone else to do it for you ??
“cool,” noah smiles and grabs his jacket from the couch. putting it on, he follows sosa to the door. “it’s a… it’s a strip club.” his cheeks are burning red. he knows it’s not your regular club. “there’s good food, though. and… sera works there. you know sera, right? she’s my…” what, noah? she’s not your girlfriend. she doesn’t wanna even be exclusive with you. but she likes you, a lot. “i’m sort of seeing her? we’re not… we’re not exactly dating, but we’ve been hanging out for like a month and… other things,” he grins, heading out of the building. “thanks for coming with me. i wanna surprise her. can we do that?”
HE CAN’T STOP THE SURPRISED LOOK FROM appearing on his face at the fact that noah is taking him to a strip club. sosa looks over his shoulder to meet his friend’s sheepish gaze. “ oh ?? ” is all he can think to say before shutting his mouth to listen to his further explanation. “ yeah, i know sera. ” at least he used to. once friends turned into something more similar to strangers, it’s still nice to hear that she’s doing well. “ no label, i get it. ” he doesn’t get it, but he’s unwilling to question the logistics of whatever’s happening between them. especially when he looks so damn happy about it. “ it’s no worries, man. we can surprise her. ..how long has that been happening ?? ”
noah comes out of sosa’s bathroom and he runs a hand through his hair. “you need a new plunger,” he says and then laughs. “are you ready?” he rubs his hands together. the man’s taking his sweet friend out. a club. not just any club, though. the one where sera works at. he hasn’t told anyone about what’s happening between them. unless you call a silly confessional question outing them. he doesn’t know if sosa knows who works there. he doesn’t know if he even knows the girl. “come on, the uber’s here.”

THE ADMISSION IS TAKEN LIGHTLY, LETTING out a small, yet friendly laugh. “ great. thanks, man. ” he tries his best to hide his apprehension on going to the club. usually clubs aren’t exactly his scene, everyone trying to yell over music and the mass amounts of people tend to bring him a small amount of stress. however.. noah’s his friend, and sosa knows well enough that he wouldn’t steer him in the wrong direction. “ ready as i’ll ever be. ” he stands from his place on the couch, leading the two of them to his front door, “ what’s so special about this club anyways ?? ”

THINGS ARE WINDING DOWN FOR HIS MORNING SHIFT at the bakery, which means he actually has some time to focus on prepping fresh goods. it’s a meditative process that sosa always enjoyed, especially in the quiet the shop had to offer. the chime of the front door breaks that silence, though he’s hardly annoyed, peering out from the back to see who’s there. “ ah, hey grace !! ” he calls out, a polite and dimpled smile on his face at the sight of someone familiar. “ just finishing up something back here. i’ll be with you in a sec. looking for anything in particular ?? ”
merrick had only moved to the village this past year - finally moving out of the dorms and into her own place had been a little different, especially since she was without a roommate. being on her own was…lonely, so she had a tendency to try and bug her neighbors.
the easiest was sosa - he was right next door, with a knack of baking incredible things, and she could smell something good from inside as she dropped her backpack off after a long day of classes. she didn’t hesitate to knock - “i’m hungry, feed me,” she sang out, half joking, hoping he’d be up for a visitor so she didn’t have to be on her own again.
THE SMELL OF CINNAMON IS PROBABLY NOTICED throughout the village. sosa, once again struck with an undeniable pang of inspiration that needed to be addressed. he’s checking the pastries and if they’ve thoroughly cooked through when someone knocks, along with a hum of wanting to be fed.
there’s no need to open the door to know that it’s his neighbor, merrick. even still he opens the door, leaning his shoulder on the frame with a friendly smile. “ hey, mer !! ” sosa greets, dimples on full display. “ if you don’t mind waiting a little bit, there’s a fresh batch of snickerdoodle bars in the oven. ”

victor sosa senior is a callous and dishonest man who regularly treated his wife poorly and ignores his three kids whenever he can. a big fish in the small pond that is norbury. on one of his important business trips to california, it was supposed to be another night of infidelity when he’d first met ophelia brigham. she was a canadian woman hailing from toronto, traveling solo across the usa. after one romantic rendezvous, days later her oceanic blue eyes were the only thing he could think about. she was entrancing, but he only had her name. online, it was as if ophelia never existed.
victor sosa jr. arrived on his doorstep a year later, bundled up with familiar blue hues peering up at the man. victor sr. had no way of getting in contact with ophelia, nor did he have a clue of how ophelia found him in the first place. victor tried explaining this all away to his wife, bianca, who, despite being tired of being treated as nothing but a second thought to her husband, enjoyed the finer things in life that he provided. but really, the family dynamic was never the same since victor jr.’s arrival, the youngest child standing out both aesthetically and personality wise. ( four carbon copies of bianca while victor jr. was the spitting image of his father and someone else )
being raised by a loveless marriage and alongside kids who think that it’s all your fault can be so harmful to a person’s mental health. genuinely, not a day would go by that his older siblings would berate him for being a bastard son, the reason why dad didn’t love mom anymore. sosa, ( he stubbornly began responding only to his last name at the age of thirteen, desperate to slip from his father’s expectations and overbearing shadow. no one calls him victor except for his father and step-mother, causing many arguments to this day ), was on the outskirts of the household from day one.
the only thing he found solace in was baking. creating his own recipes & being able to actually control something in his life gave him the slightest bit of hope. hell, sometimes he’d even cook with bianca as a way to bond with her. bonding is a loose term— she still ignored him most days, but when she’d find him in the kitchen the cold silence would be more comforting. needless to say, the moment sosa could leave the house, he did.
sosa moved to the states at the age of eighteen alongside some of his close friends. and while it’s not nearly as nice as the large mansion he grew up in, he actually feels like he can be his own person, and is therefore happier than before. currently, he’s a student at sunset hills university, and works part-time at the local bakery, the bread basket.
