This time when he approaches Nao's desk, it's with a different mission in mind. One that has him sitting down next to the fourth seat and nudging a small box towards them: an offering of a homemade bento box. "Thank you, Nao, for being so patient with me and answering my questions. I'm sorry for getting ahead of myself," he murmurs. Then, hoping that perhaps the 4th seat will be distracted by the food, he tries to take some of the paperwork with him as he goes to return to his own desk.
--- Ah.. Had they been too obvious? Granted, they had more or less wanted Izuru to stop asking so many questions about their captain, but they also.. Did not want to straight up tell him to stop, and they did strive to always aid their higher officers..
Seemed Izuru had at least some awareness.. Enough to give them a peace offering. “Thank you, Kira-san.. You didn’t have to do that.. I’m happy to help.” At least, they wanted to be. Couldn’t help it if they got a little agitated when they were only ever contacted for such matters, though.
And oh, he was still just as predictable as ever, and before he could sneak away, Nao took hold of the blonde’s wrist. “Where do you think you’re going with my paperwork..?”
He approaches the fourth seat's desk once more, intent on his mission. "I know you said the captain liked to eat, before... Do you remember if he had a favorite food at all?"
--- “Mm?” Again, they were so rudely shaken out of his workflow by more questions about their captain. They sigh, slowly leaning back in their chair and looking up at their lieutenant. They were patient, sure, but this was getting a little crazy..
“Kira-fukutaichou.. Why don’t you just ask the captain himself..?” They knew the answer, of course, but their work was starting to suffer among all the interruptions.
They couldn’t help but at least answer this last question though, lest Izuru give them that ‘kicked puppy-dog’ look. “I don’t remember a specific meal, but he used to have a real sweet-tooth.. Anything sugary he’d devour. And chocolate, too.. At times I thought he ate more treats than actual food..”
A realization has him hunting down the fourth seat, because they seem as if they may have the best idea on how to answer his question. "The captain's birthday is coming up soon, right? What sort of things do you think he'd like?"
--- They find themselves sorting an influx of files on new recruits in the archive, when suddenly their lieutenant finds them. Nao would have expected a more pressing matter than that to drive their lieutenant to look so.. Well, almost fevered. A thick brow quirks, though he makes no comment.
“Mm.. It is. The seventeeth.” If they remember correctly. Nearing so soon already? Time really does fly.. Nao closes the drawer to the letters A-D and moves on to the next row.
As for what to get him-- They shrug a little. “I don’t think he cares.. Just showing him that you’ve thought of him would make him happy. And I suppose he probably has things he likes from the world of the living..” That world has moved so much faster than theirs that they can imagine that there is little left in the Soul Society that might suit their captain.
“Why don’t you ask one of the other captains that returned with him..?”

--- “Well, yes. I think so..” Nao answers. “Hm, lets see..” They have to dig a little. It has been a while, after all. And Otoribashi’s reign had been relatively short. “Anything to do with art, really.. He’d often talk about poetry or literature, and he’d always want to organize all kinds of activities for the men to do in their spare time. I took a calligraphy class once..” It had been fun, though they don’t think they’ve retained very much of it.
“Oh, and food.” The man could eat.. A dark, deep pit for a stomach, if you asked them. “He’d eat just about anything, and he was always snacking, mostly sweets. Not so much anymore either. The same with naps.. He used to nap at his desk and now he hasn’t slept at the office even once since he’s come back..”
He approaches the 4th seat's desk and pauses, curious. "You had known the captain before he was exiled, right? What was he like? Especially compared to now?"
--- They pull their pile of paperwork closer to them to protect it when they see Izuru approach, though it seems that stealing paperwork is not currently the lieutenant’s objective, so Nao relaxes some, folding their arms over the work they are currently getting done to devote their full attention to the blond.
Ah.. Questions about the captain? They had kind of wondered when this time would come. They’ve seen the furtive glances their lieutenant has been throwing in their captain’s direction. And the way Izuru has been testing the waters. Nao would hate for him to go by Asuka’s opinion of Otoribashi, since Asuka was going by a simple gut-feeling, which, in Nao’s humble opinion, did not at all reflect how they remembered their captain.
They nodded, to indicate they had indeed known Otoribashi before. “He was the same, though I think perhaps even a little bit more carefree. I cannot know what has happened in that century he was gone, but it seems to have hardened him a bit. He used to be really quite devil-may-care about paperwork. He’d rather spend his time working on music, and he didn’t necessarily expect us to do our paperwork on time either.. Always had a rather casual air about him, but since he’s back he has been on top of the paperwork situation..” They paused momentarily. “I think that may be because of you.. Though I suspect he’d still much rather play music.” They shrug.
“I think everyone that knew him back then can tell, though.. Something is different. He feels different. It is not enough for me to cease trusting him, but I notice it when I stand close-by him..” They think that is one of the things that sets Asuka off so much. “I think it is safe to assume he went through something..” Something the gotei may not want them to know about..
They look up, settling big, brown eyes upon his lieutenant. “Did you want to know anything more specific..?”
--- Valentines or White day...? Should they even bother trying to decide which day is more appropriate for them?
Some tomo chocolate is left on their desk early in the morning.
--- Oh.. That’s sweet.. But these are.. Friendship chocolates. It is not that they don’t spend time with women, just.. They don’t really have close female friends. Oh.. That realization is a little sad.. In their opinion, the tradition is dumb and confusing anyway. They’ve never felt confident in whether they should buy or receive chocolates on Valentines or White day...
This, though, more or less tells them how others see them. They can’t say they like it very much, despite the kind intentions..

He's eyeing the stack of paperwork on Nao's desk as the time approaches the end of the workday. He's growing more and more tempted to go and take what little is left, so that the fourth seat can leave early.
--- They hardly look up from their work. They can literally feel Izuru’s eyes boring into them. If he were staring any harder, Nao thinks they may legitimately find out if looks could kill.
They don’t budge, though. “No.” They simply { and calmly } say, without a question having been asked. “No, Izuru.” You cannot have their paperwork.

“Yet you were just praising your own height, stating it as respectable, were you not?” He wonders if the Twelfth Division might be able to perform some procedure to make him taller…
--- “Fair enough..” That, though, had been a mere attempt at joining in on the fun. “Still, I was trying to defend Muguruma-taichou, perhaps while stroking my own ego a bit.. That does not mean I have any feelings one way or another about people shorter or taller than I am.” And you shouldn’t either is implied.

(for the grievance meme) "I've seen those looks you give me as I walk past your desk. Like you're watching to make sure I don't take anything. You don't need to be so suspicious!"
--- “I respectfully disagree, Kira-fukutaichou.” Nao replies mildly. Rearranging the papers on their desk some. “In fact, the statistics show that I have every reason to be suspicious of your movements around my desk, as your track record with stealing paperwork off your subordinates’ desks is in no way a great one.” Their reasoning is deadpan, and there is little room for discussion.
And besides.. They have plenty of reasons to keep their eyes on their lieutenant whenever he passes by.
