I absolutely adore Ilya Rozanov for so many reasons. And not least because Russian characters are so often portrayed in such one-dimensional terms in Western media. They're cold, brutal and calculating, without a smile to be seen. And too often, their entire plotline is that they're enemies of the West who are hell-bent on destroying us, because we've never emotionally moved past the Red Scare and the Cold War (cough cough Stranger Things season 3). But Ilya!! He contains so many multitudes!! He's a caretaker! He's good with kids! He has deep, deep grief and probably hasn't been hugged since his mother died! He's a goofy guy who shows his love through snark! He's deeply in love and terrified of the implications of that! He moved to a foreign country alone when he was barely 18 years old! He yearns to be with Shane and to be soft with him! He prepared tuna melt ingredients in neat little containers and stashed them in his fridge!! He bought a horrendous Hawaiian shirt for the All Star game in Tampa!!

The cottage invitation makes my chest hurt, because what's the longest stretch of time Shane and Ilya have ever spent together? 5 or 6 hours on tuna melt day? Years they've been together, and they've never been in the same room long enough to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. No wonder Ilya looks so choked up, the idea of a whole WEEK must be unimaginable.
