Chapter 3: Qui totum vult totum perdit
Izuku’s surroundings move from a smog-addled area to cool, full moon night in the course of thirty minutes, the moments between then blurring by as he looks over his knuckles and his still healing scratches. They throb with each pulse of his heart as remnants of adrenaline fade away from him, breath after breath.
Denki and Hanta come by eventually, clad in swimsuits after hearing that their little rooftop bar reservation came with a pool courtesy of Tenya; who admonishes both men as they ‘cannonball’ at the top of their lungs.
Izuku watches from the sidelines, close enough to the pool that he can smell the bleach but far enough to evade the water that splatters onto poor Tenya’s clean polo shirt. It stings to laugh, but the sound bubbles out of him regardless and he grits his teeth a little.
“Can you animals knock it off!” Mina hollers as she strides over to Izuku’s quiet side of the roof, her face lit up by the blue neon of the pool, contrasting her pink tone.
“Last time we do anything nice with these idiots, swear by it.” She mutters and Izuku catches the two drinks she carries over, both characterized by an orange-red hue and a rainbow umbrella crowding the lip. She smiles before taking the opposite lounge chair, setting what he guesses to be their drinks on the little table between them both.
“How’d ya feel?” She says with a raised brow, leaning in close enough, Izuku can make out faded cuts from fights he’d missed.
“Headaches gone, just—” He sighs and leans back into the chair to shut his eyes. In the dark and faded blue light behind his eyelids, he sees Katsuki, face red and sweaty, aiming at him with every inch of his being. Even as he sent them flying outside the ring, he was still tearing at him, aiming to win.
“Really, really sore.”

Izuku tells him to pace himself instead of taking leaps at each instance. But how can he, the path ahead is too long and he’s impatient. Izuku warns him to slow down, to look at him for reassurance. But Katsuki was never afraid to stare right at the sun, never feared the flame and fire as long as it meant his future was finally in the palm of his hands, cradled like a precious stone.
Good things come in threes, his mantra, the grenades at his hip, the breaks he gets during the day. Then snow blankets the city, taking with it the vibrant trees, the plants he struggles to keep alive on his patio, and then Izuku.

As all seasons go, the cold will dissipate and things must go back to normal, the trees will regain their vitality and his plants will bounce back from the sudden warm sunlight. But Izuku will leave a space not even the warm spring sun can fill.

It's always so disappointing when sci fi and fantasy books call their languages "Basic" or "Common". No language is apolitical or universal if they're all calling one language Basic, who made it that way? Why is THIS dialect "Common" and all the others are Special/Magical/Incomprehensible??? Show me even a hint of the politics, or give your language a real name
Okay so kind of along with this, I think what is really missing when languages are called things like Basic or Common is how abjectly political that actually is. Think of the level of imperialism required to have a language so common it's just called Common. How much do you have to destroy? Who has died in the pursuit of a Common language? Who has killed for it? What does their education system look like?
It's English but they have so stripped it of national and cultural context that it's Everyone's language now. Who did it come from? Has it changed since its origins, to account for all of the people it swallowed, or has it stayed aggressively the same, l'Académie Française-style? Did it flatten out the cultural nuances of other languages or did it assimilate them? Is it a mish-mash or is it one original language that has taken over?
