WHY write it this way? to not shrink back from reality, to hold up a mirror so other women might feel represented? both good reasons. if the doctor who brutalized sarah is an asshole, why did his fictional counterpart face no repercussions? — why do the women routinely lose their powers and the men do not? sacrifice is important. okay, agreed! why are only the women making these sacrifices time and time again?)

So you’ve given your character a tragic backstory. And another. And another. And now they’re carrying enough baggage to fill an airport carousel.

Question is: does it work, or did you just trauma dump all over them for vibes?

🧠 1. Does the trauma make sense? ◈ Is it believable for their background, culture, or world? ◈ Does it tie into who they are, or does it feel like a random dartboard of misfortunes?

📖 2. Is it relevant to the plot? ◈ Does it shape their goals, fears, or relationships? ◈ Does it change how the story unfolds? ◈ If not, it’s just decorative angst.

⚖️ 3. Are you balancing the weight? ◈ One or two defining wounds, written with depth, hit harder than a grab-bag of suffering. ◈ If your character has more issues than WebMD, readers stop caring.

✍️ 4. Execution > Quantity ◈ A single, well-integrated trauma is more powerful than a grocery list of tragedy. ◈ Explore it, don’t just stack it.

👉 Bottom line: Trauma isn’t seasoning—it’s character architecture. If it’s not building something in your story, it’s just noise.
