Author's Note: Hello! It is with great apprehension that I post this fanfic, which has been in my mind for almost a year, but is now finally seeing the light of day. Itâs also the first time in 12 years that Iâm writing again, so Iâm quite rusty. English is not my first language, so I apologize in advance! Itâs a long chapter! (Creating context for a fanfic set in the canon era of the eight books made me rethink my life choices, but Iâm not backing down!) I hope you enjoy it, and I would love to receive feedback <3
General Warning: Throughout the story, there will be Dark!Rowaelin, DubCon, possessiveness, extreme jealousy, low self-esteem, and many questionable thoughts and actions. There will be some creation of information for the sake of the plot but without straying from the canon, I promise.
Warnings: In this chapter, none; Flashbacks; Aelinâs parents as special guests.
Orynth, 10 months before the Fall of Terrasen
The library was silent and bathed in the afternoon sunlight, with the sounds of turning pages and scribbling on paper echoing through the room. Rhoe was intensely searching for some information that could help in training his nieceâs power. Despite being distant relatives and her presence being only due to a future agreement, he cherished the intelligent and fearless girl she was. But her ability to manipulate earth, from a long-forgotten and diluted dynasty in the Ashryver genealogy, was growing rapidly, and without any other living relatives like her and many of their records lost, it was becoming harder to train her abilities.
With a long sigh, Rhoe diverted his gaze from the paper to his daughter, Aelin, who had insisted on coming to study with him, under the pretext of âspending more time with her fatherâ and learning more about âwhatever he was learning.â
With a soft smile on his face, he watched her. Aelin was sitting in an armchair ahead of him, holding a book up to her eyes, without turning a page for quite some time. With a low laugh, Rhoe realized that his daughter was alternating her gaze between the page and his niece sitting by the window, drawing in her notebook, unaware that she was being attentively admired.
Aelin had come just to be close to Y/N. His smile dimmed as worry washed over him.
Aelin couldnât help but notice how her hair shone in the sunlight, how her irises became lighter, and how her skin seemed to glow as she traced lines upon lines in her notebook. It was... mesmerizing. The fantasy book was already forgotten; she couldnât concentrate on a single word. She wasnât sure why she couldnât. She just felt her cheeks warm slightly, using her book as a shield against her blush.
Was this what it meant to like someone? Her heart beat faster when Y/N was around, and her mind often wandered to the moments they spent together. So it was different from friendship... right? She had heard stories about her uncle Orlon and how he liked Darrow more than a friend, and that had never seemed strange to her. But now, feeling something like this for Y/N left her a bit..confused
A memory of the conversation she had the day before with her aunt, Marion, came to her mind:
Aelin was sitting in the garden, surrounded by the flowers her aunt Marion lovingly cultivated. Spring was at its peak, and the air was fragrant with the scent of the flowers. She looked at her aunt, hesitating for a moment before asking the question that was on her mind.
âCan I ask you something?â
Marion smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind Aelinâs ear. âOf course, dear. What do you want to know?â
Aelin took a deep breath, nervous. âUncle Orlon and Darrow... they like each other more than friends, right?â
Marion paused for a moment, surprised by the question, but her smile remained gentle. âYes, they do..â she squinted her eyes, already knowing where this was going. âWhy the question?â
Aelin took a deep breath, thinking about how to ask her that. âHow do you know when you like someone like that? How do you know itâs more than friendship?â
Marion held Aelinâs hands, looking into her eyes. âLiking someone like that is a special feeling. You feel your heart beat faster when youâre near that person, and you think about them all the time. When youâre with them, you feel a happiness you canât explain. Itâs a type of affection and care that goes beyond friendship.â
Aelin bit her lip, still a bit confused, but her auntâs words began to make sense. âAnd if I feel that for someone, but itâs not a boy?â
Marion smiled, caressing Aelinâs face. âLove doesnât choose genders, Aelin. What matters is how you feel. If your heart says itâs love, then itâs love. And thatâs something beautiful, regardless of who it is.â
Aelin felt relieved but still confused at the same time. âBut... how can I be sure if itâs really that? How can I be certain?â
Marion thought for a moment before answering, her words filled with kindness and understanding. âAelin, love isnât always something we can define clearly. Sometimes, itâs confusing and complicated. But if this person makes you happy, if you feel a special connection, and if your heart beats faster just thinking about them, then maybe you already have your answer. Donât be afraid to follow your heart.â
Aelin nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. Marionâs words echoed in her mind as she tried to understand her own feelings.
Back in the library, Aelin looked at Y/N once more. Marionâs words resonated in her mind. Maybe it was more than friendship. Maybe it was something special. She wasnât sure yet, but she knew she wanted to find out.
Plains of Theralis - Terrasen, 6 months before the Fall
The field stretched out before them, a vast green expanse that seemed to lose itself on the horizon. The sun was high in the sky with vibrant heat. A light breeze carried the fresh scent of the earth and wildflowers, mixed with the distant sound of birds singing.
Aelin, with a daring smile on her lips, gracefully and confidently pulled the reins of her horse. She cast a challenging glance at Y/N, her blue eyes shining with the promise of fun and competition.
âLetâs see if you can catch me!â Aelin shouted, her voice filled with contagious joy and a hint of provocation.
Y/N, feeling the dense wind on her face, smiled back, her heart racing both from the race and the attention of Aelin. She spurred her horse forward, leaning in with determination. âGet ready to lose!â she responded, with a glint of challenge in her eyes.
As they raced, Y/N couldnât help but get lost in the sight of Aelin. The way she moved, with wild freedom and natural grace, was mesmerizing. Her laughter, free and vibrant, seemed to echo across the vastness of the field, blending with the sound of the horsesâ hooves hitting the ground.
Aedion, riding a bit behind and enjoying the competition, watched the interaction with an amused smile. He approached and shouted, âShow offs! I donât want to be the third wheel here, so donât worry about beating me!â he teased, his tone filled with humor and lightness. Y/N laughed as Aelin cast a challenging look at Aedion as she sped up even more, the wind blowing strongly in her face.
Last Beltane before the Fall
The festival was full of life and renewal. Bonfires blazed in the shadows of the night, casting a golden and dancing glow over the smiling faces of the people. The heat from the flames mixed with the fragrance of flowers and herbs adorning the place, colorful clothes and floral adornments decorated the participants, who moved to the rhythm of festive music.
Aelin and Y/N were at the center of the celebration, jumping over the flames with contagious laughter, their shadows projected on the dancing flames. The joy on their faces was palpable, and the heat of the fire seemed to reflect the flame of their own feelings. The sound of folk music and laughter mixed with the crackling of the bonfires, creating a symphony of celebration.
After a jump over the last flame, Aelin stopped dancing, and with a soft smile and a special glint in her eyes, she pulled something from her dress pocket and approached Y/N.
âI have something for you,â Aelin said, handing Y/N a small velvet box.
With her heart racing and the heat of the festival still vibrating in her bones, Y/N looked at the box with curiosity. âWhat is it?â she asked, her tone curious and eager.
Aelin smiled, her gaze fixed on Y/N as she watched her reaction. Y/N opened the box and found two delicate necklaces, each with a unique pendant. One necklace was adorned with a radiant sun pendant, and the other with a crescent moon. The light from the bonfires reflected off the jewelry, casting small sparks that seemed to dance in sync with the music.
âAunt Marion made them for us. So that we always remember each other, no matter what happens,â Aelin said, her voice joyful and slightly hoarse from the celebration. She put on the necklace with the moon pendant for herself and held the necklace with the sun pendant, offering it to Y/N.
Orlon and Darrow watched from afar, their gazes attentive to the scene unfolding before them between the little princess and her future lady-in-waiting.
âDoesnât this worry you at all? Itâs good to see the girls together, but donât you think this little crush could cause a new...linear impasse?â Darrow said with slight concern, his eyes still on the girls as they put on the necklaces for each other.
Orlon maintained a serene look at the two, still unaware of the agreement proposed not long ago: Aedion would marry Aelin in the future, with Y/N being the queenâs lady-in-waiting, a general, a bearer of wildfire, and a geomancer of the rare and forgotten Montserrat lineage.
But the âinnocent crushâ had everything to become something more in a few years, and that was visible to everyone. Some servants even dared to say it could even be a mating bond that caused them to get along so well and never be apart.
âWell, if thatâs the case, maybe Rhoe should start ordering another little princess as soon as possible to keep the agreement in order!â Orlon jokes, his eyes shining with humor.
Darrow couldnât help but laugh lightly, even with the weight of responsibility still hanging in the air. âLetâs see how this unfolds, then. We still have time.â
Orynth, Hours Before the Fall of Terrasen
The day in Orynth was shrouded in a tense and anticipatory atmosphere. The unexpected visit of the King of Adarlan and his son, Dorian, to the kingdom of Terrasen had alerted everyone, even after deciding to give them a warm reception.
During the dinner, where royalty and the closest members of the court were gathered at the table, Aelin struggled to maintain her composure after rejecting Prince Dorianâs friendship, which was quickly rebuffed with his comment that he ate like a little lady.
Moments later, without any warning, Aelin felt a pressure in her head as a sudden burst of heat emanated from her body. Flames erupted around her, dangerously close to the curtains and ornaments. The guests recoiled, some shouting in surprise, while the Terrasen guards rushed to control the situation. Aelin's eyes were wide with terror and frustration as Y/N, amidst the chaos, swore she saw the King of Adarlan watching with a cold smile on his lips.
The dinner ended abruptly, and a quick decision was made: Aelin would be taken to a country house, far from Orynth, where she could learn to control her powers more safely. Her parents and a few guards would accompany her.
Hours later, as night started to fall, determined to comfort Aelin, Y/N sneaked into her room. The castle was silent, as she entered the room unseen, finding Aelin sitting on the bed, her eyes still vacant from the events of the dinner.
âHow are you feeling?â Y/N whispered with concern.
Aelin looked up in mild shock, her shoulders relaxing slightly at the sight of Y/N in her room. She tried to smile, but the effort was evident.
âIâm fine.â she answered quickly. â Itâs just.. itâs getting harder to.. you know, controlling these.. â She replied, while raising her hands, voice quiet but trying to stay light. It was bad enough she had been banned from the library, her favorite place, because of them; having an episode like this, in front of everyone...
Y/N gazed at her for a moment and moved closer, sitting beside her. They sat in silence for a moment, just feeling each otherâs presence. Aelin sighed deeply, her shoulders relaxing slightly.
"You've got this, Aelin. You always do.. Plus, you're not alone in this. At least they know what to expect, right?" Y/N said reassuringly. "Unlike my power, which is completely unknown, and I'm the only one who has it."
Aelin laughed lightly and before she could give her a smart remark, Evalin appeared in the doorway, her expression surprised but soon replaced by gentle concern.
âYou shouldnât be here, Y/N... Come on, letâs go back to your room,â she said, her voice firm yet kind.
Y/N resisted, holding Aelinâs hand. âI just wanted to know why she canât stay here! Or maybe I could go too! Lady Marion is going, can I go too?â she complained, trying to give Evalin her best puppy eyes.
âBecause...â Evalin hesitated. What excuse could she use? She didnât like lying to the girls, but if she said it wasnât safe, it would not only spark more interest but also add more reasons for her pleading.Â
âBecause someone has to stay here to keep Prince Dorian company, and Aedion... well, heâs not the best at it, is he?â Evalin sighed, giving the most generic answer she could.
However, it was not entirely false. Aedion was still on bad terms with the princeling for spilling tea on Aelinâs dress.Â
Y/N huffed before getting up from the bed and hugged her, not noticing that one of the sunâs rays from her pendant had caught on Aelinâs still-scorched blue dress, tearing and falling onto the bedspread.
Aelin noticed and tried to warn her, but she had already left the room with her mother. With her eyes fixed on the chain, Aelin quickly wrapped it around her own, the pendants connecting, the sun encircled by the crescent moon. âIâll return it later.â she whispered to herself.
But later, Terrasen was attacked.
The castle of Orynth was under siege. Flames licked at the stone walls, casting eerie shadows as screams echoed through the corridors. Adarlan, whom they had once welcomed as allies, were now ruthlessly burning and killing everyone in sight. The betrayal was a sharp dagger into their backs, a cruel twist after extending hospitality to those now wreaking havoc.
Aedion shielded Y/N with his body, keeping her safely behind him as they navigated the chaos as the last two survivors of Orlonâs personal guard guided them to the secret passengers . "Stay close," one of them muttered, gripping his sword tightly.
Y/N's eyes were wide with terror, tears streaming down her face. Her mind raced to Aelin, desperate to know her fate. "What about Aelin? What about Uncle Rhoe and Aunt Evalin?" she whispered to Aedion, her voice trembling.
Aedion's jaw tightened, his own worry evident despite his attempt to remain calm. "They'll be fine," he whispered back, "Aelin is strong, and so are Rhoe and Evalin. They have guards with them, theyâll be safe." his furrowed brow betrayed his own fear as his words sounded to not only reassure Y/N, but also himself.
They hurried down a narrow corridor, the guards pushing aside a tapestry to reveal a hidden door. "This way," one of them urged, ushering Y/N and Aedion into the secret passage. The door led them to the edge of Oakwald Forest, their only hope of escape. But as they emerged into the dim light of the forest, they were ambushed.
Adarlanian soldiers surrounded them, swiftly killing the guards who had been guiding them. "Run!" one of the dying soldiers shouted, his final act a desperate bid to save them.
Y/N didn't hesitate. She sprinted into the forest, her heart pounding, while Aedion drew a sword off the grass and followed, cutting and attacking any enemy that tried to block their path. Seconds felt more like hours, their skin and feet now bruised and scratched by the bushes as they entered the dark forest, the trees now looming like silent sentinels, and the sounds of battle faded as they ran deeper into the woods.
Y/N's breath came in ragged gasps, her mind a whirlwind of fear and grief. The betrayal, the loss, the uncertainty of their survival weighed heavily on her. Aedion was right behind her, his presence a small comfort in the midst of the nightmare.
As they reached a small clearing, they paused, both panting for breath. Aedion's face was grim, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of further danger. âYouâre okay?â he asked breathlessly, while scanning her with his eyes looking for any more serious wounds.Â
Y/N was panting, breathless from running. Her body was caked with dirt and marked with cuts, her face streaked with tears that left trails on her cheeks. Her eyes were wide, lost and frightened, as she reached for her neck and realized her necklace was gone. She whispered Aelin's name and Orynth's, her voice trembling, lost for words.
Aedion felt the earth beneath his feet start to tremble, a subtle vibration that grew stronger as Y/N spiraled deeper into her panic, awakening her powers. He cut the distance between them, wrapping his arms around her, nestling her face against his chest beneath his chin, while his other hand gripped his sword tightly. He held her close, grounding her in the present and calming the tremors, ensuring they wouldn't attract any unwanted attention.
"We'll find Aelin," he said, hugging her from the side, one hand on her head, the other still with a firm grip on the sword. his voice firm despite the sadness in his eyes.

Dean Winchester is dead. For decades, he, along with Castiel and Sam, has led a peaceful afterlife in heaven. He has everything heâs ever wanted: a home, his family and friends surrounding him, and a relationship with Casâand heâs bored as hell. Until, one day, Chuck escapes heavenâs lock up and begins capturing souls to regain power. To stop him, Jack sends Dean, Cas, and Sam back to Earth. After so long away from hunting, will they be able to once again find their place in the family business?
There are continuations of canon, and then thereâs Redux. An entire 20 episode Season 16. Each chapter is a new episode, some of which could constitute entire fics in their own right. It's a love letter to the show (and a hate letter to the finale).
The overarching plot is compelling: Chuck escapes and is trying to get his power back. Dean, Cas and Sam are charged with one final hunt. Interspersed are monsters-of-the-week episodes and plenty of interfamily drama. It truly feels like having the show back.Â
Dean and Cas may have had time together in Heaven, but they still have a lot to work on when it comes to communication. They are messy in a way that feels true to canon, and eventually they work through things with each other and with the rest of the family in a way I found extremely satisfying.
It's healing to get a final season that ties up loose ends and leaves them with the happy ending they deserve. You may even find a little peace when you're done.

I didn't wake to my alarm like I did every morning but instead with the feeling of something moving across my bed sheets, half draped over my body. I sat up in shock, looking around in alarm only to find a snake that looked just as shocked as me. I stared for a moment before the previous night began to filter back into my mind and I slumped back onto my pillows, letting myself relax.
"Sorry Precious forgot you were here, I'm so used to being on my own." I greeted the beautiful creature as he slithered up alongside my face and bumped his nose on my outstretched hand. I turned onto my side to face him as he coiled his body beneath him and came to a sit still on my pillow. A yawn broke the soft silence of the room and with a stretch, I sat up and rubbed my hands over my face with a sigh.
"Okie dokie Snakie, what is best to wear for a book shop interview huh?" I knew he couldn't speak but it was better than talking to myself like I usually did. I shuffled over to my wardrobe, dragging open the doors and clicking my tongue in thought. Humming to myself, I pulled out a few items that would be appropriate and laid them on the end of the bed. "Okay so, this black skirt goes well with some tights and kitten heels look cute, I think suspenders would be best with it and a shirt that matches, maybe navy blue, to go with a blazer jacket or" I pulled out a few more things. "These black trousers could be okay with this top and a blazer. What do you think?" I held the skirt and trousers up whilst looking at him and shrugged. "I like the skirt plus I feel it would fit a bookshop pretty well."
His yellow eyes seemed to dart between the two before settling on the skirt and nodding towards it slightly. I grinned at him and placed it on the other side of the bed beside him.
"Now for the top, this navy shirt or the navy scoop neck with long sleeves?" I lifted them both up and down as we decided. "I like the scoop neck but it does come a little low and shows a bit of cleavage. With a blazer, it shouldn't be too bad right?" I decided with a hum of satisfaction before going to my drawers. "Black or blue suspenders?" His head bobbed to the black ones so I chucked them to the bed before smiling and clapping my hands together. "I shall be back soon, don't wander off Precious." I gathered all of my clothes and underwear into my arms before making my way to the bathroom.
As I dressed I couldn't help the nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach. I really needed this job, really wanted it too and couldn't help but worry about the outcome. I smoothed down the skirt with a sigh as I looked at the outfit in the mirror, the items did go well together. After brushing my hair and styling it I nodded to myself and left the bathroom, careful not to slip against the tiles because of the material of my tights.
"I think you have an eye for fashion Precious," I twirled around in front of the snake and grinned, grabbing my chunky heeled oxfords to complete the fit. "Okay, walking won't take long and the earlier the better at this point." It was bordering on 10 AM as I grabbed my blazer and bag, throwing on a clean scarf for good measure. "Right, I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone but I don't think Mr Fell will appreciate me bringing a snake to the shop somehow." His head nodded towards my scarf as he made his way over and I looked at him confused. "Look, you could hide under my scarf around my neck but you'd have to be very still and well-behaved." Seemingly he understood everything else so this couldn't hurt right. "I mean it, best behaviour Precious." I let the reptile slink up around my neck and made sure to cover him carefully with my scarf so it hid him but didn't suffocate him.
"Let's do this," I whispered to him, leaving the apartment and locking the door behind me. The journey was fairly uneventful though the sun did shine for once, even with a slightly chilly breeze around us. I enjoyed the reassuring weight of my new friend around my neck and found myself rearranging the scarf to discreetly pet him every so often. I waved a thank you to a driver as they allowed me to cross the road and looked up at the burgundy building in awe, taking a deep breath before pushing the wooden door open, smiling as the bell tinkled above me.
Nobody was in the shop as the door closed behind me gently and I clutched the strap of my bag as I looked around me. The walls were filled floor to ceiling with books, not as incredibly neat as other shops but this gave it a more warm and homey feeling. A gentle light filled the shop as I wandered between shelves, dodging tables piled with books and chairs placed around the room for shoppers. For a few moments, I totally forgot about the nerves and churning of my stomach whilst being surrounded by my passion until a mess of white curls peered around one of the selves and bright blue eyes met my own. My back straightened instantly and I smiled at them.
"Hi, I'm looking for Mr Fell," My throat was considerably dry as the figure came into view.
"Yes, that's me, it's nice to meet you..." He trailed off slowly.
"Oh right, I'm Y/N. I saw your job listing online and couldn't wait to have a look at your shop." I held out my hand to him, silently thanking the heavens it wasn't sweaty because of nerves. "You didn't specify the date or time so I thought I'd come by and see if you had any preferences." My heart thumped in my chest as his warm hand shook my own, lingering for a second before he clasped them in front of him with a smile.
"Of course my dear, if you just follow me to my desk that'd be great." He wandered off around the corner and with a nod I followed, rearranging my scarf as the snake beneath shifted slightly. "Take a seat wherever you'd like dear girl." I did as he said, smoothing down my skirt and placing my bag down by my feet before allowing my eyes to meet his. "So, have you ever worked in a bookshop before?"
"Not quite, but before moving here I spent so much time in one that I was practically part of the furniture." I joked, relaxing as he chuckled.
"They are the most relaxing places to be so that's understandable. My shop is quite big, how well do you think you could memorise genres and where they go?"
"My memory can get a little muddled but once I get used to things then I can be as reliable as a contents page in a book so I think I'd do pretty well." I was being entirely honest here, something told me he'd be able to tell if I bent the truth even a little.
"That's quite alright, I understand these things take time." His eyes caught on my scarf for a second as my stowaway shifted. I bit my lip hoping he would let it go. "I'm sorry, Your scarf seems to be moving on its own accord. Is there something under it?" I couldn't tell whether he was annoyed or confused but I held my breath and nodded stiffly.
"I had a bit of a surprise on the way home last night and was a bit troubled because I don't have the facilities to leave him alone," I explained, unravelling the garment from around my neck to reveal the red and black snake beneath. "I'm really sorry I brought him with me but I couldn't leave him unattended plus he's well-behaved, usually." His shining blue eyes met the snake's calmly as he held out his hand slightly.
"There you are my dearest, honestly, I leave you for five minutes and you go missing. Do you know how worried I was?" My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as he spoke to the reptile, a tone of irritation in his voice though it was minor.
"He's yours?" I couldn't help but feel my heart and stomach sink at the idea of him having an owner already.
"You could say that, he's quite the demon." The snake seemed to hiss in amusement at what seemed like an inside joke and I nodded sadly. "Where did you find him, if you don't mind my asking?"
"In the park, you ought to know he has a wound on the underside of his belly and though I cleaned it, and please don't think I'm crazy, he refused the vets entirely. Going as far as lunging at me for trying to push the idea." The man in front of me seemed to nod in agreement and didn't judge me, holding out his hands to take him.
"Yes, that sounds very much like him. He's a stubborn soul." He lifted the animal and tutted as he saw the wound, visibly upset by it. "What on earth happened? Why haven't you taken care of yourself." The way he spoke seemed like he was expecting an answer and I couldn't help but be unsure and confused. "Please go and fix yourself so we can talk about this properly my dear boy. You have some explaining to do." Within seconds, the snake was placed on the floor and wriggled away, leaving the two of us amongst the books. "Sorry about that dear, I'm sure you're quite confused by the whole ordeal."
"A little, he's very intelligent for a snake. I didn't realise he was someone's pet, sorry about this." I twisted my hands in the fabric of my skirt.
"Who are you calling a pet?" A new face appeared beside the bookshelf, a lean body resting against the shelves. I jumped in surprise and smiled at the stranger.
"Sorry, I didn't realise there was anyone else here. I'm Y/N, do you work here too?" I shook the man's hand, still shaken by the previous occurrence.
"Crowley and nope," He threw himself on the sofa beside Mr Fell, wincing slightly as he sat himself up. "I just enjoy the company." He grinned widely at the other man, straightening his sunglasses. "Anyway, you didn't answer my question." His hand held his stomach for a second before he shifted.
"Mr Fell has a snake that went missing, I found him and was just saying that I didn't realise he was someone's pet."
"Oh, he's not, if anything he's the snake's pet," I looked at him in confusion, hoping for elaboration as Mr Fell shook his head at Crowley. "Aren't you Angel?" My eyes flickered between the two for a moment, cheeks flushing as I realised they must be together or at least dancing around one another with the way they interacted. The two noticed my state of befuddlement and grinned at one another. "I do like the name Precious though. Wouldn't mind that as a nickname when you're working here." His head tilted towards me as he slipped off the sunglasses and looked me straight in the eyes.
My brain seemed to short-circuit as the same eyes the snake had looked at me, a huge grin spreading across his face. I opened my mouth to speak but quickly closed it when words failed to form. This happened a few times before I gave up, settling for just sitting and staring at the lean man. I mean stranger things have happened, right?
"Are you alright dear?" Mr Fell leant forward in his seat as I blinked at him blankly. "I fear you've broken her Crowley, you could've been gentler with her."
"She'll snap soon Angel, she was talking to a snake for Satan's sake, this can't be that strange to her if I pointed her in the direction of your shop and she proceeded to listen." I nodded slowly, he did make sense after all.
"So," I took a deep breath, pursing my lips for a moment. "You're telling me you're the snake that I found in the park that can just miraculously turn from snake to human-"
"Not quite human Darling, more like a demonic entity if you'd be so kind."
"Okay, snake to demon then. And you expect me not to freak out right?" I was taking this better than expected. "Maybe, I could just have a glass of water please Mr Fell." My clammy hands gripped my skirt as I cleared my throat, huffing out a breath that I didn't know I'd been holding.
"Of course, dear, give us a moment." The two disappeared from the sofa, talking amongst each other.
"Come on Angel, she's alone and we'd be doing her and ourselves a favour." The way he pleaded made him seem almost human.
"That's all good and well dearest but look at her, she's obviously in shock by the situation. If you were human you'd be the same, Y/N had just found out you are a demon, turn into a snake and has probably guessed I'm an angel by now so do give her some time." My eyes came back into focus as the glass of water was held out in front of me and within seconds the liquid was gone and I gasped a breath. "Better?"
"Yes, thank you. I have no idea how any of this works obviously but I guess it is what it is. I'm sorry I called you a pet and also sorry for almost keeping him, he's quite charming as a snake." The two chuckled before Crowley seemed to catch onto what I said.
"Hang on, I'm charming anyway."
"Yes well, it seems you have some new things to get used to but as a thank you and just because you seem overall quite perfect for the job, you can start anytime within the next week. It's up to you if you still want the job of course." The angel seemed to be hesitant as he waited for a reply, comforted by the dark-haired demon that had his arm resting on the back of the couch behind him.
"I mean, I'd still love the job, I just ask I get a few explanations and answers to questions if and when I have them if you don't mind Mr Fell." I couldn't work out why this hadn't set off alarms in my head but in all honesty, I was very curious about the pair.
"That sounds wonderful dear, it'll be lovely having a new face here with us and it's Aziraphale, Mr Fell is just a cover-up name for the shop." That made sense. The smile on his face made me smile back as I stood up, followed by them both. "There isn't a dress code either as long as it's comfortable and appropriate."
"In case you have any questions that can't wait." Crowley held out a piece of paper with his number on and I took it with a smile. "Don't hesitate to message or ring us." He winked, the glow of his eyes only brightened by the warm light of the room and I nodded, trying to hide the creeping blush on my face.
"Well, I'd better get going, I'll see you both tomorrow then." And with that and a call of goodbye from the pair I left the shop, bell tinkling above me once more, leaving me to the onslaught of thoughts and questions on the two strange beings.

Time had a cruel sense of humor, and it didnât differ on any day like today, the skies trickling with rain, warning London of an impending storm. Yet, it didnât tear you from your conquest in searching for a job.
You were sure to have found one by now, yet with the current economy, you werenât sure how you were going to make it with the diner job you had, letting your other skills and talents be pushed aside. You couldnât afford to do so much longer, for you ached to be out of your apartment finding purpose other than in the books you plowed through.Â
You adored your quiet life, but something inside you wanted more and knew you could strive for it.Â
That is how you found yourself with a stack of resumes in hand, sliding them into the mailboxes of local businesses, praying for a miracle you would get a response. Soon enough you dip into the coffee shop across the way from the last stop you made at a quaint bookstore that was oddly still in business.
You hadnât mustered up the courage to peruse through the piles of books even though Maggie at the record shop insisted that her landlord and the owner of the bookshop, Mr. Fell, was sweet and meant no harm. Either way, youâd been too busy at the diner until now to consider applying for a job there. You hoped something would come around, but only a miracle could make it happen.Â

Meanwhile, Aziraphale began his morning as usual with some hot chocolate and making a record of miracles in the like when Crowley stomped in, huffing while clenching a wrinkled piece of paper.Â
âAwe come on, angel. Why are you doing this?â Crowley groaned.
Aziraphale swiped the wrinkled paper from Crowleyâs grasp. âItâs only hospitable to offer the poor dear a job. I mean, look at their credentials!â he exclaimed as he excitedly flipped through another page as if he were reading a great myth instead of a resume.Â
âWhatâs the point? You practically have me to do all the work here for you,â Crowley mumbled, downing the rest of his wine. He stretched out on the couch again, his long lean legs draped over the arm, adding an extra bit of drama to any bit of furniture. The demon could not sit on anything properly to save his life.Â
Aziraphale sighed and bit his lip, eyes twinkling with mischief. âIf you consider your work laying around here drinking, yes you do a fine job at that.â Crowley lifted his head, mock rage plastered over his face. âBetter watch that tongue of yours angel, You know I love it so.âÂ
âWell, then better make yourself useful and dust the books and tidy up your plants. We should expect a visitor within the hour.â Azi smiled warmly at his partner, giddiness filling his chest when Crowley pecked him on the cheek.Â
âIâll get right on it, angel.âÂ
******
You huffed, drowning down your third, or was it fifth? cup of coffee. You werenât sure why you felt this way, the stress in your shoulders building the more you typed, your brain filling with words faster than you could write or type them down. Youâd been at Ninaâs shop for an hour, most of it spent scrolling through job listings, though your search also included browsing some bookstores and a new computer you have been eyeballing for months.
Alas not much had come from your ventures, but you have to admit it was a good day to get out of the flat and enjoy the fresh air and the coziness of somewhere else other than your pit of despair. You could only stay inside with yourself and your mind for so long.Â
Regardless, you enjoyed the quiet chatter, the drip of the machine keeping in time with your typing, and then a ping sounds from your phone. Your heart races, could this be it?Â
âHello?â A soft angelic voice inquires from the other end. âI was calling about your interest in a job. You see Iâm Aziraphale, Mr. Fell as most call me, I own the bookshop across from Ninaâs coffee shop. TheâŠGive Me Coffee or Give Me Death that one, itâs hard to miss. Would you be interested?âÂ
Would I be interested? Hell yes, you would after months of finding nothing thatâd pay anything for manual labor you wouldnât imagine anything better than sorting books all day.Â
âMr. Fell, that would be lovely. When do you want me to start?â You thrum your fingers on the table, not believing your luck.Â
âAre you available now? I have cocoa biscuits and tea!âÂ
âI donât think Iâm in any position to refuse your offer, Mr. Fell.âÂ
âLovely, itâs settled then. Iâll see you within the hour, yes?â His voice is warm, reminding you of an old friend and holding hands with a friend by the lake. It made you happier than youâd been in a while and when you set your phone back on the table, glancing at the bright light streaming in through the window despite the darkening clouds of the horizon, you know you wonât refuse this job; itâs almost too good to be true.Â
******
âOh boy, that doesnât look good,â Crowley mutters, shoving piles of books into the shelves, trying to make the shop more presentable, as Azira put it. The sky outside darkened an alarming shade of gray and Crowley could practically hear the impending storm cackling in warning.Â
Aziraphale sighs, taking off his spectacles and rubbing his eyes. âWell, if worse comes to worst, we can stay in for the night and forgo the Ritz.âÂ
âYou? Forgo the meal at the Ritz? The world must truly be ending!â Crowley exclaims, throwing himself back on the couch right as the first clap of thunder came down, the notable pitter-patter of rainfall following in its wake.Â
Not a moment later, the doorbell rings, and there you are, a jacket plastered along your form, hair damp and you sneeze. âHi, Iâm here to see Mr. Fell.âÂ
******
âGracious come in come in, Oh do sit down, let me take that for you!â The smaller man, Aziraphale you note, bustles around, offering you an armchair, which you sit in, groaning at the warmth. The deluge came out of nowhere, soaking you to the bone during the albeit dort walk along the street, but you ended up getting distracted at Maggieâs record shop, losing track of time as fate would have it you ended up an utter wreck at the job youâd accepted a meer hour before.Â
âIâm so sorry for the state of my appearance, I shouldâve brought an umbrella.âÂ
âThe weather is quite unpredictable is it not?â Another person appears from the shadows, encased in black, hair a lovely shade of red that makes you wish you could pull it off as well as them. They reach out their hand to you and you lean forward accepting it.Â
âCrowley, a pleasure to meet you. I see Aziraphale ran off before introductions.â He motions for you to stand and you do so, while he drapes his black jacket over you. Itâs pleasantly warm, and youâre equally impressed with the black turtleneck and vest combination heâs currently sporting.Â
You smile at the gesture. âIâm sure itâs for the tea. There was mention of it on the phone call.âÂ
âOh, right, the infamous phone call. It practically made his day, though I insisted that he didnât need to hire anyone, no donât take it as a bad thing, necessarily. Nina and Maggie vouched for your character too so now youâre practically part of the block gang.â
âCrowley, are you interrogating our guest?âÂ
You pull the borrowed jacket closer around you trying not to shiver in a combination of nerves and excitement. The easy banter between the two of them makes you feel at ease and it comforts you how relaxed they are in each other's presence. If all your days could be spent with a gentle, quiet and constant companion by your side, then you couldnât possibly want for more.Â
âI am sorry for inconveniencing you.â you blurt out, Mr. Fellâs gaze meeting yours in quiet understanding.Â
âItâs no trouble at all, weâve not much going on, isnât that right, Crowley.âÂ
âRight, whatever he said, thatâs right.â the tall lanky figure grumbles, discarding a pile of books on the floor, making you wince at the thump they leave behind.Â
That mustâve hurt, you grumble.Â
âTheyâll be alrightâ Crowley grumbles.Â
Whoops, you had spoken that out loud. You clench your jaw, trying in vain to relax, the nerves flowing through you, making your stomach tie itself in knots despite your mindâs protests.Â
âCrowley, I would appreciate it if you didnât throw my books in that manner,â Mr Fellâs brow quirks, eyes lighting in quiet mirth as he leans over to whisper, âHe does that when heâs grouchy.âÂ
âI assume it happens frequently, then.âÂ
âUsually when I irk him or someone else, which is at least three times a week or more.âÂ
Crowley scowls, âItâs not that frequent!âÂ
You smile at the easy banter between them, the way they brought you into this small sphere of their world and it makes you feel less alone than you have had in months. You enjoyed this, the glances they tossed back and forth with the ease of old lovers, twin soulmates of the universe ancient in their own right.Â
âWell then, I think itâs settled,â Aziraphale faces you, hands clasped, a smile gracing his lips. You burrow further into the jacket Crowley lent you from the deluge, nervous for the outcome. In the next moment, Aziraphale hands you cocoa, finalizing the matter, âI think weâll get along just fine, my dear.â Â
******
Countless hours later youâre sandwiched between them on a plush couch, Aziraphale (he insisted you didnât have to call him Mr. Fell) with a book on his lap and Crowley with a drink in his hand. Youâre halfway listening to the story Aziraphale tells, still delirious and in disbelief that you scored a job and somehow gained two companions youâve felt you have known ages. The hours passed by quicker than you imagined and you didnât want to leave.Â
Months without a job and companionship have you linger in the doorway and you smile at them fondly, hating to leave but you walk back into the rain in your borrowed coat that fits your form.
You hadnât remembered it fitting so well before, the universe worked in mysterious ways. But, you found a thread of hope, warmth, love and acceptance and you sure as hell arenât letting go of it for anything.
Joy fills your heart as you walk out the bookshop door Crowley holds for you and Aziraphale presses a kiss to your hand, wishing you well. You donât think youâve been more excited for a job-or anything than you have now. No more moments you would take for granted now that you had them, a life complete and full of laughter and love.Â
******
Time was cruel and a fickle thing. Two figures stand on a hill under a tree, leaning into each other, what others wouldnât see is the phantom hand resting between their palms, one of a lover past, a companion dear to them slipping into another world.
Time could be cruel, but it had given an angel and a demon a mortal companion to care for alongside each other and blessing or cursing time, one thing is for certain, they were grateful for all the moments, no matter how limited, that they got to spend with you. And they had a silly little resume and a fateful deluge of rain to thank for it.
The taller one carefully drapes a long coat around the headstone, the shorter one following suit with a bouquet of flowers. In their arms they find solace, the ghost of you a mere fragment of their millennia of existence but they would live it over and again if only to be with you.

Summary: Ten is back, and by God are you going to hold his hand so he never leaves again.
Words: 1220
He had registered it when it happened, of course. The feeling of warm, human skinâyour warm, human skinâagainst his own, that familiar rapid pulse beneath his fingertips, was not something he could ever forget. And when it was this specific hand you were holding onto, attached to this specific arm leading to this specific face, he truly couldnât blame you.
He guessed it had been a good hour. An hour since heâd regenerated, since youâd recognised his new-but-not-at-all-new face and your own face had lit up, utterly devoid of the dread youâd had before. And youâd hugged him, and heâd hugged you, and youâd latched onto his hand and hadnât yet let go. Running around the TARDIS, landing her, holding Donnaâs box, riding in the taxi, sneaking through the crash zoneâŠyour hands had been wrapped tightly around the other, each a constant, solid presence.
So, though he had registered it, the conscious recognition didnât come until he yanked you towards him when he instinctively reached with that hand for the screwdriver. Balancing on your haunches beneath him, you stumbled a bit. An apology was on his lips until he glanced down and saw the white knuckles wrapped around his.
He looked up. Recovered from your little topple, you were staring straight at him.
âAda.â He said it softly, eyebrows raising, and you blinked. There was a deep concern in your bright eyes. Not visible on the surface, only he could see it, because he could always see through you.
He lifted his hand, the one attached to you, and the corner of his lips lifted slightly. âI need my hand back for a minute,â he said.
Your face seemed to visibly pale. You sat properly on the ground and slowly released your death grip, your fingers returning to their pinkness. You didnât quite let go though, your gaze seeming anchored to your hands as thoughâŠas though it was the one thing keeping him there with you.
The Doctor hummed. âHey, you.â You caught your bottom lip between your teeth and looked at him. He stretched out his free hand and tapped your nose. âItâs alright,â he promised you, offering a smile.
You nodded, hesitant at first, but more assured as you quickly dropped his hand and drew it back to your chest, holding it there with the other. âI know.â
The Doctor reached into his pocket for the screwdriver, eyes never once leaving you. You were distracting yourself from not physically feeling him, scratching at your head, twirling hair around your fingers, that leg shake you did whenever you felt restless. He couldnât quite remember you being so anxious when heâd been him all those years ago. An inquisitive child, youâd followed him absolutely everywhere, but you hadnât needed the assurance of his hand in yours to know he wasnât going to leave you. But then, times had changed, and so had the both of you. Heâd regenerated and regenerated and regenerated since, each one sucking a tiny bit more life from you than the one before. No wonder youâd grabbed the first hint of familiarity youâd received in fifteen years and not let go.
The Doctor stretched his legs out and rested his crossed ankles on a concrete block. He drew a box in the air with his sonic, a map of sorts, hoping to figure out what exactly the spaceship was and how he was expected to save little old Earth this time. Without looking down, he jerked his head a little to the side. âSpace next to me,â he said.
A moment later you were beside him, crossing your legs beneath you, hands on your lap as though you had no clue what else to do with them. You watched as he fiddled with the sonic and sat in silence for a good ten seconds. Until he stopped. And he turned to look at you. And when your eyes met, his brows furrowed, and a smile, full of nostalgia and sadness, slowly spread across his face. He reached out to cup your cheek, his thumb rubbing the skin. Tears sprung to your eyes.
âI missed you,â you whispered.
âI know. Come here.â
He stretched his arm out, allowing you to move closer and all but bury yourself in his side. His arm wrapped around your back and the other went instinctively to your head, holding you close to his chest.
Your gentle sniffles werenât hard to miss. He kissed the top of your head, lingering there for a bit, shutting his eyes. âIâm here now, Y/N. Iâm here.â
âBut for how long?â
He couldnât answer that. Something was niggling in the back of his mind. This face was being borrowed for an undetermined amount of time, some cruel trick from the universe that by God he couldnât help but be thankful for.
âLetâs not worry about that now,â he said. He removed the hand from your head and put it between you, feeling you grasp it. You held it tightly, that little hand, that hand he had watched grow, that sweet girl he had raised, and sent a silent prayer to whoever would bloody listen that heâd have longer than he dreaded this time.
âYou look different, you know,â you spoke softly a moment later. You turned your head to rest your cheek against him.
The Doctor rose a brow, running his tongue along his teeth. âThat so?â
âStill the same, but different.â
âAh. You look different too, you know. From when this face last saw you, that is.â
 âI grew up.â
The Doctor frowned, subconsciously holding you that bit tighter. âYeah,â he said, âyeah, you did. Can you stop that, by the way? Growing up? Iâm not the biggest fan you know.â
You pretended to think about it wiping at your eyes with your free hand. âDonât think so.â
âBig shame, that. Massive shame. Probably the biggest shame of all. I remember when you were little little, when I had to tie your shoelaces for you and peel your oranges.â The latter was still true now, come to think of it. âBut youâre still that same little girl, arenât you, hm?â He lifted his head a little to peer down at you, trying to catch your gaze. âArenât you, Y/N?â There was a point hidden in those words. A point heâd had to reiterate so many times before on so many different levels. No matter his face, no matter his personality, no matter anything, he was still the same. The same Doctor. The same alien. The same being who loved you with all of his hearts. And he needed to remind you of that, to prepare you, because if what he feared would happen happened, he wantedâhe needed it to be easy. For your sake. As easy as it could be. In whatever way helped you. In whatever way gave you back that life heâd inadvertently had a hand in destroying.
You drew away from him to look him in the eyes. Your own eyes were glistening, but you sniffed and held them back. You smiled lightly, then rose on your knees to wrap your arms around his neck in a tight hug. The Doctor returned it without hesitation, shutting his eyes.
ââCourse I am,â you said quietly. âJust like you.â

MILLSON WAGNER STEELWORKSÂ
NORTH LONDON, â EVENING, DECEMBER 2023
A UNIT team was promptly dispatched as the spaceship breached Earth's atmosphere, making its way North of London. Both serving as scientific advisors, you and Shirley were on-site where the ship had landed.
While some military personnel were busy extinguishing the flames from the spacecraft and securing the perimeter, preventing you from delving further into the investigation, you found yourself engrossed in studying the ship's scans displayed on the monitor in your hands, attempting to unravel the mystery.
"Miss them, do you?" A voice called out from behind.
You averted your gaze from the tablet, turning to find Shirley maneuvering her wheelchair next to you. Curious, you asked, "What? Who?"
The redhead sported a cheeky smile. "The Doctor, of course."
It was widely known that you had journeyed alongside the Doctor and his myriad companions. Images of their faces flashed in your mind as you reminisced about those exciting adventures. Rose, Donna, the Ponds, Clara... you longed for them. There was a noticeable absence of the Doctor that left a gaping black hole in your chest.
You shook your head, muttering to yourself, "Can't let the Doctor catch a glimpse of me again; the entire universe might just fold in on itself once more. Already me being here is a problem since thereâs a possibility he could pop out at any moment. Iâm only on duty since I owe Kate a favor."
Shirley hums and responds, "I've read the files, you know. You two were quite the team. Everything that had happened⊠was in the wrong place at the right time. Still, it could happen, the two of you⊠together."
You raise your eyebrows at her and offer a small smile while shaking your head, scoffing, "The Doctor was unaware before, and I won't be the catalyst for another cosmic meltdown due to my selfish reasons. Besides... the Doctor doesnât know Iâm still alive and UNIT is already on my arse for even existing on this timeline.â
The redhead emits a sympathetic murmur and pats the side of your thigh, "Wasn't your fault, love. A colossal tear in time and space that dragged you in here... sounds like fate, or destiny even. If anything, maybe it was supposed to happen... like you andâ"
The tablet beeps, abruptly halting Shirley's train of thought. You glance at the monitor, furrowing your brow, then hand over the device to her, saying, "You need to see this. I believe there's more to this than we initially thought."
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
âNow I think weâre making a fundamental mistake. âCause maybe that spaceship was a collision course to start with, but look.â Shirley says while the UNIT soldier looks at the tablet, âAt the last minute, it pulls up, then settles. What Iâm sayinâ is, that ship didnât crash. It parked.â
As Shirley presents her observations to the UNIT soldier, you can't help but notice the intensity in her gaze, the lines of concentration etched across her forehead. The soldier queries, "No signs of life?" You step forward, interjecting, "Not yet. But we don't know what kind of life we're looking for."
Suddenly, an unexplained shiver races up your spine, goosebumps breaking out on your skin. A palpable sense of familiarity and the eerie feeling of being observed by someone you know too well. Your expression shifts into a frown, and Shirley catches on, concern knitting her brows. "What? What's wrong?" she asks.
You open your mouth but hesitate, exchanging glances with Shirley and the UNIT soldier. Shirley, sensing the urgency, instructs the soldier to step aside. Both of you retreat to a secluded corner, where she probes, "What happened? You look like you've seen a ghost, dear."
You exhale shakily, "I... I think he's here. He's back."
"Shirley, I need to leave, immediately," you declare, attempting to stride away with urgency.
"Wait, hang on a second," Shirley interjects, gripping your wrist and compelling you to halt. "He's already seen you, yeah? Looks like nothing bad has happened andâ"
"Nothing bad has happened yet, Shirley. The stars could go out; millions of galactic species could die if we so much as breathe in each other's direction. I can't risk it. I won't."
Tears well up, and Shirley guides you to a stop near one of the staircases, settling herself in her wheelchair. As you take a seat, you rub both hands over your face, wiping away the tears. "I should have died that day."
Shirley remains silent, allowing you to continue as you shakily sob, "I should have died. But I didn't, and I'm still here."
"I lied to him, Shirley. I lied. He... he might never forgive me for it," you confess brokenly. Shirley shrugs, offering, "You won't know unless you talk. And it seems to me that whatever was keepinâ you apart before⊠is tellinâ you two maybe now is the right place at the right time."
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
Deep in contemplation of your choices, someone suddenly seizes your wrist, muffling your voice as they pull you close, your body pressed against a comforting warmth.
"Hey, it's me. It's the Doctor," he reassures, and you instinctively push away, allowing some distance between you two. Both of you stand there panting, but he breaks the silence first, shouting, "I thought you were dead!"
Throwing the words back at him, you retort, "I was supposed to be dead!"
"Why aren't you dead?" he demands, and frustration laces your high-pitched response, "Are you bloody serious in asking me that?â
âNo. Yes! Argh, I don't know!"
Shaking your head and taking a step back, you declare, "I need to leave."
The Doctor firmly grabs your wrist, halting your escape. "No. Not again."
With determination, you wrench your wrist from his strong hold, shouting, "The universe could collapse! Again! We weren't ever supposed to meet. It was a mistake."
Wide-eyed, the Doctor gazes at you and replies in a breathy tone, "Is that really what you think?"
Paused, unable to respond, you hear his voice in your head, a telepathic whisper so familiar. "You and I both know, that it wasn't a mistake."
Glaring at him, you muster as much resistance as possible, but those big dark brown eyes make it challenging. "That's not fair. Get out of my head," you retort with furrowed brows.
The Doctor whispers your name, barely audible, causing you to flinch and look away. Instead of acknowledging his presence, you pivot to a question, "You regenerated⊠But why this face? Why are you back?"
"Why do you ask? You don't like this one?" he retorts.
Crossing your arms, you roll your eyes, "With you, there's always a reason for everything."
The Doctor admits, "Must be why the TARDIS brought me to you and Donna."
You regard him with a concerned gaze and tone, "What? You saw Donna, did she recognize or remember you?"
"The fail-safe worked; she just commented about my clothes. She has a daughter named Rose," the Doctor hums, kicking a small piece of gravel on the floor. You nod, "Yeah, I keep tabs on 'em. Making sure they're alright. Even though Donna gave all that money away to charity."
"Do you know why she did it?" The Doctor asks.
"I don't. But I have a couple of guesses," you reply with a close-lipped smile and a shrug. The Doctor brings his gaze to you, and you can already feel the question before he says it.
"I thought you were dead, for fifteen years."
You scoff, "Oh, that's nothing for you, Time Lord and all."
The Doctor throws his hands up in frustration, "Oh, don't do that."
"Do what?" you demand.
"Pretend that it was nothing for me! You were everything to me," the Doctor says, taking another step closer, and you take a step back this time. You look at him with narrowed eyes, and in a low tone, you say, "You and I both know that's not true."
"What happened? Where did you go?"
"You and I both know what happened after Arcadia. I was ready to die. I thought I had served my purpose, what I was made for. I got shot midway through the regeneration process, and I felt it. I felt myself slipping away... I could only see the two suns, and then when I closed my eyes, there was this surge of energy... I couldn't explain it back then, and I can't now. But it was like someone had given me their regeneration energy... but when I looked around, no one was there, and I was no longer on Gallifrey."
The Doctor finishes the sentence for you, "You were brought to Earth."
You nod, "I still have no idea who did it. But now, I can't leave. And all those years, my memories were locked away in that old pocket watch until I met you... and then the stars started to go out once more, and I knew I had no choice⊠I couldn't stay with you."
"All those years... you were alone, just like me," the Doctor says, and you look away before sitting atop one of the crates by the pillar, sighing, "I need to leave again... planets could disappear and galaxies could collapse at any second, and we'd be back where we started."
The Doctor remains silent as you close your eyes, resting your head on one of the stacked crates behind you. You yearn for him. Every atom in your being longs for his presence, yet every angle you examine seems to present an unsolvable puzzle. Thus, you convince yourself that distancing is the best course for everyone involved. How does one repay a sacrifice of such magnitude?
Then, you detect his approaching footsteps, and he settles comfortably beside you, shoulders brushing as he leans in. "Or... we could finally figure out a way to solve the paradox."
Opening your eyes, you shoot him a pointed look. "Doctor, we're in the middle of yet another crisis. A spaceship just landed, and we have no bloody clue who the hell we're dealing with right now. And you want to solve the impossible with our situation?"
"Who says I can't multitask?" he retorts, wiggling his eyebrows playfully. You lightly smack him on the arm, feeling warmth flood your cheeks. Memories of the carefree early days flash through your mind, recalling lingering gazes and soft touches exchanged. Licking your lips nervously, you release a heavy breath, "One problem at a time. We have another alien on the loose."
The Doctor takes that as a win, a calculated risk, with the universe as a potential consequence. He's never demanded anything, and for the first time, he yearns for something for himself. He envisions it â hope â the prospect of finally rewriting the ending you both desperately desire.
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
The sonic clicks and buzzes as the Doctor conjures a holographic screen, displaying the schematics of the spacecraft that recently landed nearby. He retrieves his glasses from his coat pocket, donning them as he peruses the screen. Pressing a few buttons, he zooms in on the bottom part of the ship before highlighting the drive.
Frowning, your eyes narrow as an unsettling weight settles at the pit of your stomach while reading what's on the screen.
"Too good for us now?" Shirley remarks as she rolls up in her wheelchair. The Doctor briefly glances at her, nodding, and casually greets, "Evening."
Shirley smiles knowingly as she looks between the two of you. "Doctor. I see you and my colleague have talked. Has galaxies and universes collapsed yet?"
The Doctor hums, "Mmmm, not yet. Soon maybe, if I could get her to kiss me."
You smack him on the shoulder a little harder this time, and he yelps out, "Ow!" Making a face at him, you retort, "Oh, sod off!"
The Doctor gives you a cheeky smile while Shirley chuckles next to you. She then looks at the holographic screen on display, and the Doctor brings his focus back to the problem at hand, saying, "Thatâs a double-bladed dagger drive, damaged by laser fire which means weâve got two sets of visitors at war with each other."
He glances at Shirley politely, "Nice to meet you. Did you get the heat readings on deceleration?" Shirley chuckles and clicks her tongue, "Oh, I got everything." She unfolds her tablet to give to the Doctor, who presses a button on his sonic screwdriver to close the holographic screen. Taking the tablet, he begins to analyze the readings as your colleague introduces herself, "Shirley Anne Bingham, UNIT Scientific Advisor number 56."
The Doctor sounds delighted, saying, "Oh! I was Scientific Advisor number one."
Shirley smiles, "No, I know. Iâve read the files. Iâm gonna get a bonus just for meeting you."
The Doctor makes a face, not used to humble praise. "Oh."
Shirley then asks, "But why are you hiding away? Weâre on the same side and it canât be âcause of her now." She looks at you, and you also turn your attention to the Doctor.
He slightly groans and inhales sharply before replying, "Itâs all a bit mad, Shirley. I donât know who I am anymore."
Shirley crosses her legs in the wheelchair and says matter-of-factly, "Well, you look like the Doctor to me."
The Doctor shrugs, "Well, exactly. The one in the skinny suit. After that, I wear a bow tie. After that, Iâm a Scotsman. After that, Iâm a woman."
Shirley frowns, "But thatâs your future. You canât know that. Itâs forbidden."
The Doctor replies, "I regenerated. And she became me."
Both of Shirleyâs eyebrows rise, and her eyes widen as she says, "You got your old face back?"
The Doctor replies with a resounding pop, "Yep."
"But why?" Shirley asks, and the Doctor sighs, "Well, thatâs what Iâm worried about."
He then inhales deeply before continuing, âBecause, besides this lovely stubborn woman right next to me,â you pinch the bridge of your nose briefly as he continues, âI've got this friend called Donna Noble. She was my best friend in the whole wide universe. I absolutely love her as much as I love this one right here.â The Doctor pulls a face and pouts, puffing out a breath as his thick eyebrows furrow, he says, âOh. Hmm. Do I say things like that now?â
Shirley smiles at him while commenting, âSounds like a good thing to say.â
You mumble, âIâm not used to this.â
âBut Donna took the mind of a Time Lord into her head. I had to wipe her memory to save her life. If she ever remembers me she will die. So what happens next?â The Doctor said with emphasis and leaned closer to you and Shirley, âI get this face back, and the TARDIS lands right next to her. I turn around, thereâs her husband. A spaceship crashes in front of her. That led me here to my other best friend in the whole wide universe, my Time Lady who I thought was dead for many years. Itâs like sheâs drawing us in.â The Doctor finishes, and you and Shirley give each other a look, processing everything he has just said. Especially you, who was processing the fact he called you his. You and Shirley blinked a few times before Shirley said, âWhat? Sheâs making it happen?â
The Doctor shakes his head, âNo, sheâs got no idea. Sheâs so ordinary. Sheâs brilliant. Sheâs got this beautiful daughter. Sheâs happy. Is she? Hmm.â He pauses before saying in a lower tone, âBut the universe is turning around the two people I love the most again. I donât believe in destiny, but if destiny exists, then it's heading straight for Donna Noble and quite possibly the love of my life right next to me.â
You blink in surprise, opening your mouth to try and say something, maybe correct him, but nothing comes out, so you sit there, mouth gaping next to him like a fish while Shirley has a toothy grin as you say to the Doctor, âOkay, Iâm still not used to whatever this is⊠and I donât think I ever will be. Youâre kind of freaking me out a little, dear.â
The Doctor grins, âOoh, are we doing pet names now darling?â
You rub your right eye, feeling a migraine beginning to form, âI⊠What the hell is happening? You sure youâre alright? Last time you regenerated into this form you had a high fever and you were⊠completely out of it.â
The Doctor scrunches his nose and sniffs, âI feel great. Fantastic even!â
You purse your lips, observing the Doctor from head to toe, and then focus on his eyesâthose warm, inviting brown eyes. Softly, you remark, âYou've grown.â
The Doctor returns your gaze, his lips forming a quirked-up smile that reveals a dimple. "Just a little bit, yeah."
Shirley interjects, steering the conversation back on course, âYou said it was also heading for Donna. What for?â
The Doctor responds with a swift, âI donât know.â Shirley replies with an, âOh.â The Doctor continues, with deep emphasis, âBut she canât remember. I wonât be the one who kills her.â
Shirley nods, and the tablet in the Doctorâs hands beeps. He looks at it, saying, âRight. Thereâs no sign of a pilot, but thatâs not an automatic drive, so you should look forââ
âMaâam,â a soldier interrupts, cutting off the Doctor. He slinks back into the shadows, and you and Shirley listen to what the soldier has to say. âWe found the escape pod. No sign of life, but weâre moving out to secure the site.â
Shirley quickly replies, âGood work, soldier. Go get it.â Dismissing the soldier and watching her walk away, the Doctor moves to stand, removing his glasses and putting them away, ready to follow the soldier. But Shirley raises her hand and says to him, âUh, yeah, yeah. Not you two, mate. Iâve got this. Off you pop. Bye-bye.â
Shirley begins to roll her wheelchair away, leaving the Doctor and you confused. The Doctor then calls out to her, âWaited your whole life?â
To which Shirley throws a look over her shoulder as she responds with a smirk, âYou wish.â
The Doctor looks at you, and you look up at him. He turns his hand, palm up, waiting for you to take it with your hand. You glance at his hand and back to his eyes; he sees the uncertainty swirling through your gaze.
The Doctor speaks gently, âI know you arenât ready and youâre scared⊠but I know youâre brave. And the universe listens to the brave. Câmon, itâs time to be brave again.â
You release a shaky exhale, swallowing the lump in your throat and dismissing the rational urge to walk away from him. Taking his hand, he tugs you along, pushing his legs into a run with you, hand-in-hand.
He thrusts the exit door open, utilizing his sonic screwdriver with his other hand on the back of the UNIT truck, the chains rattling as the trunk hatch pops open, pulling you with him to settle at the back of the truck.
As the UNIT truck pulls away, you see Shirley waving you off, and the Doctor gives her a small salute while you offer her a faint smile.

CHISWICK, LONDON â EVENING, 2023
You constantly poked your head out to see the stars, in case anything had changed. The Doctor held your hand, squeezing it every time you did, quietly reassuring you that whatever you faced, you'd do it together.
Arriving in the residential area, a long street lined with cars and now multiple UNIT trucks and soldiers running around, you could hear Donna shouting, âOh, what the hell is it doing in my shed? Get out of my garden!â
The Doctor ran towards the sound of her voice, and you followed him. Reaching Donna's home, the Doctor pounded on the door, âLet us in! Let us in!â
Sylvia glared at the Doctor as she briskly walked towards him, but he exclaimed happily, âSylvia! Oh, Sylvia! So nice to see you again. Could you let us in?â
Sylvia angrily whispered, âYou said that if she sees you again, she will die. Well, no. If â if she remembers me. Thatâs slightly different.â
You heard and saw Donna through the stained glass yelling from down the hall, âNo such thing as spaceships? Weâve got a bloody Martian in the shed!â
Sylvia angrily said, âJust get out of here, now.â But the Doctor knelt down to peek through the mail slot to see all the commotion, finding a small white fluffy creature with big eyes. âOh, wow. Heâs so cute,â the Doctor mumbled. With no other choice, he used his sonic to unlock the door as Sylvia told Donna, âDonât look! Donât look. It doesnât exist.â
As the Doctor walked down the hall, with you trailing behind him, Sylvia whirled around to slap the Doctor. He grunted and groaned, âHere we go again.â
âItâs that man!â You recognized Rose say as Donna pointed at the Doctor, âOh, itâs the skinny man!â
Sylvia continued to try and gaslight Donna, outstretching both her arms to block both of you, âHeâs not there! You canât see him. And thereâs no monster. Oh, for the love of God, none of this is real!â
You and the Doctor ducked down and crawled to the creature to help assist them. In the middle of all the shouting and noise, you saw Shaun Temple appear, saying, âHey, hey. Dadâs home.â
Everyone stood at a standstill, wide-eyed and unsure of what to do next. After a pause, Shaun commented with a small smile, âSomething smells nice.â Sylvia smiled, âTuna madras.â
âMeep, meep.â
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
As you and the Doctor sat on the floor, he carefully wrapped Meepâs injury in his hands with medical tape, while you quickly assessed if the Meep had any more injuries. Sylvia spoke to Donna, âWe should think about infection. I mean, I think this man should deal with this beast, and we can leave him alone and go back to mine.â
Donna pulled her arm away from Sylvia and gestured around the Meep, âNever mind. Never mind about the ferret from Mars.â She gave you and the Doctor a pointed look as she growled out, âWho the hell are you two?â
You looked to the Doctor for help, and he stumbled over his words, âIâ um. What was it?â He looked to Shaun who replied, âA friend from Nerys.â To which the Doctor promptly agreed, âThatâs it.â
Donna scrunches her nose and says, âNerys. Well, now it all makes sense. That viper in the nest.â She continues and points to the Meep, âIâm not going anywhere. We could sell mad Paddington for a million quid.â
Everyone reacted, giving Donna a pointed look and a noise of disagreement, âWoah!â Donna tried to justify her comment by saying, âYou fill the fridge!â
The Doctorâs expressive eyebrows furrowed, and he asked Donna, âWhat did happen to all your money?â Donna got defensive and threw back, âWhy are you so interested in us? Everywhere you go, there you are. Now you got this woman with you,â She gestured to you, âare you sure youâre safe with him, darling? Is he forcing you to be with him? Did he kidnap you?!â
You blinked wildly at Donna, âUh, noâ Iâm good. Heâs my partner.â
The Doctor smirked at you, âOoh, Iâm your partner?â To which you narrowed your eyes at him, âQuiet, you.â He pouted but continued to finish wrapping the injury of the Meep, then the Doctor said, âThere is one person missing. I used to know your grandad, Wilf.â
Donna shook her head, âHeâs not with us anymore.â
The Doctor had a somber expression as he nodded, âRight. Course. He wasnât young; he wasââ His lower lip trembled as he admitted, âI loved that man. Iâm so sorry for your loss.â
Donna shook her head, emphasizing, âHeâs not dead.â Sylvia shot the Doctor a sharp look, âYou idiot.â
The Doctor gaped at them, and Donna continued to share, âHeâs in sheltered accommodation. Heâs 94. He canât manage the stairs.â Shaun took over, saying, âWe were lucky. We couldnât afford it, but this offer came along.â
Rose smiled, painting a vivid picture, âItâs amazing. Heâs got this room, like a cottage and a garden, and itâs almost free.â
âRun by that lot in the middle of town? UNIT? This woman in charge, Kate, she says heâs an old soldier, sheâll look after him.â Shaun said, and the Doctor's face lit up, âRight. I know her. Sheâs looking after Wilf. Brilliant. Brilliant.â
Shaun tilted his head as he looked at you, âYou look very familiar⊠Werenât you with Kate as you were helping with the accommodations for Wilf?â
Your lips pinched together as you nodded, âYeah, I work with UNIT. I check on him regularly; heâs wonderful.â
âMeep, meep.â
You and the Doctor turned to the fluffy white creature in front of you, and the Doctorâs eyebrows raised as he inhaled sharply, âYes! The Meep. I promise I can help him get home. Then youâll never have to see me, or well, the both of us ever again.â
Rose looked at the Doctor and gave him a questioning look, âYouâre assuming he has a pronoun? Hmm.â
The Doctor took it in stride and nodded, âTrue. Yes. Sorry. Good point.â He quickly turned to the creature and asked, âAre you he, or she, or they?â
The high-pitched voice of the Meep responded, âMy chosen pronoun is the definite article. I am always the Meep.â
The Doctorâs expression shifted to one of understanding as his thick eyebrows raised and he nodded, âOh. I do that. But you were shot down. Who wants you dead?â
You tilt your head, captivated by the Meep's explanation, âThe Wrath Warriors. They cultivate Meepkind for our beautiful fur. But then the galaxy said, âNo more fur. Itâs wrong. So the Wrath Warriors slaughtered their livestock.â
The Doctor crosses his arms, a thoughtful expression on his face, and leisurely leans back on the couch, letting his back rest against it, âYouâre a fashion victim.â
A collective groan escapes from all the humans in the room, âNo.â
The Doctor quickly mumbles an apology, and the Meep continues, âNow, they will hunt me down till there are no Meeps left.â The Meep sniffs, âIt breaks both my hearts.â
You and the Doctor exchange surprised glances, both of your eyebrows raised. The Doctor shares with the Meep as he gestures to both of you, âYou got two hearts? So do we.â
Donna quickly catches onto the Doctor's revelation and frowns, âYouâve got what?â
Sylvia tries to downplay what the Doctor just exposed, stammering as she speaks to Donna, âNo. He means it like a metaphor. Like two minds. Do you?â You and the Doctor shake your heads, but suddenly thereâs a pounding at the door.
âOpen up!â
âWell, what the hell is it now?â Donna exclaims, her frustration evident as she wonders why all these strange anomalies keep happening. The Doctor pushes himself up, and you assist him with his navy blue coat as he puts it on. He continues addressing everyone in the room, âAh, good. The soldiers! They can give us a lift.â
As he goes to answer the door, leaving you with the Meep and Donnaâs family, Rose can't help but ask, âAre you twoâŠâ
Your cheeks feel flush, the tips of your ears turning warm, âYep.â
Just as Donna is about to make a cheeky comment, you hear the Doctor slam the front door shut, loudly informing you all, âI think we need to run. Woah!â
Suddenly, an explosion rocks the backdoor, causing everyone to hit the ground with a collective yelp. You and the Doctor peek to look at the new visitor; arthropods, with a tough chitinous exoskeleton. With their external skeleton acting as a skelo-shield they had formidable strength. Their eyes were like large red lights. Seeing the Wrath Warriors enter while saying, âWrath, attack formation! Surrender the Meep!â
UNIT soldiers burst in from the main entrance, their voices echoing down the hallway as they shout instructions to each other. The distant hum of gunfire and the vivid flashes of lasers light up the space, creating a chaotic symphony that fills your senses.
Donna, caught in the middle of the sudden onslaught, shouts in confusion and frustration, âWhat the hell is going on?â
The Doctor deftly manipulates his sonic screwdriver, adjusting its settings. He turns to Shaun and inquires, âWhereâs your car?â
Shaun, bewildered but cooperative, responds, âUh, five- five doors down.â
âExcellent.â The Doctor nods. He pivots, activating the sonic screwdriver to generate large, rectangular force fields. The blue glow emanating from the force fields reveals a recent upgrade, and you can't help but smile, commenting, âNice upgrade, love.â
âThanks, dearest. Help me move this, wonât you?â The Doctor passes the sonic to Donna, who handles it with familiarity. You and the Doctor work together to slide the force field into the first section of the hallway, dodging blaster shots as you go. Once in the living room again, you take the sonic from Donna, creating your force field with the Doctorâs scientific instrument. The Doctor observes you with admiration, and together, you slide the final force field into place, sealing off the area where the Wrath Warriors were firing from.
Immediately, the Doctor issues a commanding directive to the Noble-Temple family and the Meep, âUpstairs! Up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up!â They follow the urgent order, shrieking as they ascend the stairs, sandwiched between the force fields that shield them from the relentless onslaught of gunshots and laser fire.
âCome on, Meep!â The Doctor encourages, executing an energetic dance of hopping and flailing arms. The Meep responds with a whimper, âNo.â Undeterred, you and the Doctor persist, the Doctor continuing his lively hopping routine, insisting, âCome on! Thatâs it.â
You guide the Meep up the stairs, the Doctor closely behind. A reassuring hand rests on your back as the trio ascends. When you're halfway across the corridor, a deafening explosion erupts from behind. The Noble-Temple family screams in fear, and you're thrown to the ground. However, the Doctor reacts swiftly, his strong arms wrapping around your waist to break your fall. In a protective move, he cushions the impact with his body, leaving you on top of him.
You swiftly roll off him, your palms hitting the floor as you propel yourself upward. Grasping the Doctor's hand, you haul him to his feet, both of you swiftly turning around to confront the aftermathâa colossal, gaping hole now occupying the space where a window once stood. Donna's cry of agony echoes through the room, "My house!"
Despite the devastation, there's no time for dwelling. The Doctor urgently directs everyone, gesticulating emphatically, "Upstairs. Upstairs, upstairs!"
Observing the Wrath Warriors soaring menacingly through the breached window, and amidst the symphony of gunfire and laser blasts echoing from the stairs, you and the Doctor deftly ascend to the third floor. With a swift motion, he lowers the ladder leading to the attic, urgently urging everyone, "Up we go! Fast as you can."
The entire group efficiently ascends to the attic. Positioned beside a robust brick wall connecting attics along the street, you and the Doctor huddle close. The Doctor showcases the device in his hand, proclaiming, "This is a sonic screwdriver. And if it's good at one thing, it's resonating concrete." He flips it in one hand before activating it, causing vibrations to ripple through the mortar.
Shaun interjects, "That's not concrete. That's mortar." Donna, in her familiarly exasperated tone, sighs and quips, "Thank you, Bob the Builder."
With a determined push, you and the Doctor dislodge the bricks, prompting them to cascade down. Donna crouches beside the Doctor, complimenting, "Skinny minnie, you're not bad."
The Doctor grins at Donna, "You think?"
However, Sylvia intervenes, frowning as she guides Donna aside, firmly asserting, "No, she doesn't. Now move."
"Come on. Five houses down," the Doctor grunts, effortlessly moving aside a box brimming with Christmas decorations. He takes the lead, guiding the family through the interconnected attics.
Traversing through these loft spaces, you witness the chaotic scene unfolding outside, with laser beams and gunshots punctuating the air. Explosions resonate in the distance as you navigate the makeshift route, carefully descending a staircase. Along the way, you stealthily pass by someone deeply immersed in sleep on a couch, oblivious to the turmoil around them.
Upon reaching a door, the Doctor jostles it open, revealing a view of the black cab parked a few meters away. Amidst the cacophony of gunfire and distant shouts, the Doctor extends his hand and requests, "Can I have the keys?" Shaun promptly hands them over.
As the Wrath Warriors advance with their menacing backs turned, the Doctor swiftly swings the door open, directing the family and the Meep into the sanctuary of the black cab. Positioned in the passenger seat, you observe the Doctor deftly using his fingers to check the pulse of a fallen UNIT soldier. Abruptly, a Wrath Warrior pivots, growling, "Meep located. Stop the Meep!"
Evading blaster fire with nimble agility, the Doctor slips into the driver's seat, swiftly igniting the engine and propelling the cab into motion. The Meep whimpers, "Help! Save the Meep!"
As the Doctor skillfully navigates away, Donna exclaims, "Oh my God!" Shaun pivots within the cab, jubilantly stating, "You did it!" Meanwhile, Rose chimes in, "We're alive," and Sylvia expresses gratitude, "Thank you."
"Meep, meep."
While the Doctor keeps a vigilant eye on the side mirrors during the escape, there's a discernible shift in his tone, "Either we've escaped, or we've got things very, very wrong."

UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE, LONDON â EVENING, 2023
The Doctor skillfully maneuvers the cab, smoothly parking it in an underground garage. A contemplative furrow graces his forehead as he steps out of the vehicle. With an attentive courtesy, he opens the passenger door, gesturing for you to alight from the cab. Simultaneously, he opens the back passenger door, facilitating the exit of the Meep.
The Doctor deftly extracts a barrister's wig from the depths of his coat, perching it atop his head with an air of theatrical flair. Meanwhile, the Meep positions itself purposefully in front of the cab. In a tone of authoritative declaration, the Doctor announces, "This court is now in session."
With a swift motion, he retrieves his trusty sonic screwdriver, and it emits a distinctive whiz as he proclaims, "Intercept teleport!"
The Meep emits a piercing shriek, swiftly retreating a few meters behind you and the Doctor. Donna, emerging from the cab, questions, "What the hell are you doing?" The Doctor, with an authoritative air, responds, "Silence in the court."
In the blink of an eye, two Wrath Warriors materialize just across from you and the Doctor. You stand there, massaging your face with your hand, as he adopts a menacing tone and declares, "Iâm invoking Shadow Proclamation protocols 15, P, and 6. Under my jurisdiction, there will be no violence until such time I deem it fit and proper. Is that understood?"
The Wrath Warriors nod in compliance, dutifully stowing away their weapons to their sides. The Doctor, brandishing his sonic, gestures towards the taxi, asserting, âNow, exhibit A. The taxi. No scorch marks. Donna, can you confirm?â Donna swivels around, inspecting the taxi behind her, and nods, âUm. Yes, no, nothing.â
You arch your eyebrows, interjecting, âWe were hit by plasma bolts, but there isnât a mark.â The Doctor affectionately kisses your forehead, remarking, âClever girl.â You duck your head, feeling a slight warmth in your chest and cheeks. He proceeds, âAnd that soldier in the street. He was unconscious, not dead.â Pointing at the Wrath Warriors' guns with his sonic screwdriver, he continues, âExhibit B. Those guns are stun guns. Is that correct?â
The right Wrath Warrior nods, âThe guns apply a mild and harmless neural anesthetic. For the record, my name is Sergeant Zogroth.â The left Wrath Warrior adds on and says, âAnd I am Constable Zreeg.â
The Meep interjects from behind you, its large ears folding to the side, âBut the evil Wrath Warriors want to kill the Meep.â
âThe only ones out to kill were the soldiers with the swirling eyes,â the Doctor asserts, gesturing in a circular motion with his sonic, his eyes widening to emphasize his point. âWere they coming to hurt you, the Meep? Or save you?â The Doctor eyes the furry creature suspiciously.
âIf I may speak,â Sergeant Zogroth says, and the Doctor promptly replies, âAddress the court.â
âThe story of the Meep is a tragic tale. Their planet basked in the light of a living sun. Until one terrible day, the sun went mad,â Sergeant Zogroth began, his voice laden with the weight of the narrative. Constable Zreeg chimed in, âA psychedelic sun.â
Sergeant Zogroth continued, âIts radiation mutated all of Meepkind into cruel beasts who live for conquest.â
The Doctor's face lights up with realization, "The eyes. That's solar psychedelia." Sergeant Zogroth adds, âIt renders them as maniacs.â
âThe Meep army captured the Galactic Council, beheaded them, and ate them,â Constable Zreeg revealed, sending shivers down your spine. You and the Doctor exchange a grimace at the horrifying revelation. âThe Wrath Warriors were summoned. And we fought across the stars, a long and awful battle,â Sergeant Zogroth continued with a somber tone.
âMeepkind died rather than surrender. And now, only this one survives. Their leader, the most cruel and despicable of all,â he added, pointing to the Meep, who responded with a plaintive, âMeep, meep.â
The Doctor, adopting a composed stance, interjects, âNow. Letâs be fair. Itâs your turn, the Meep. Witness for the defense. So, what do you say?â The Doctor crosses his arms, and you observe as the Meep's innocent visage transforms into something more sinister and monstrous.
The Meep's sharp teeth are bared as it growls defiantly, "Oh, to hell with this!" With a swift motion, it brandishes a weapon, declaring, "Exhibit C!" The Meep takes aim and fires, bringing down the two Wrath Warriors, their bodies collapsing to the ground. You, the Doctor, and Donna quickly rush to the fallen foes. The Doctor, during the action, removes his barrister wig. The Meep, in a sinister tone, adds, "No stun guns for me! Just die!"
Shaun leaps out of the cab, urgently shouting, "Donna! Donna, don't!" Despite his plea, Donna remains fixated on the fallen warriors, her concern evident. You find yourself beside the Doctor on the ground as the Meep triumphantly declares, "And here they come! My soldiers of the psychedelic sun!"
Suddenly, a convoy of UNIT vehicles arrives, accompanied by soldiers with their distinctive headgear, forming a protective perimeter around all of you. Their authoritative voices ring out, "Obey the Meep!"
Donna, her maternal instincts flaring, turns to Shaun and passionately commands, "Get out! Get Rose out!"
Shaun swiftly maneuvers to the driverâs seat while Rose and Sylvia settle back in the taxi. However, the UNIT soldiers, now under the control of the Meep, have you all surrounded with no clear escape.
âI donât need to pretend, for I am the Beep of all the Meeps,â the Meep declares, grinning menacingly with its sharp teeth.
Sergeant Zogroth emits a final groan, his parting words being, âSergeant Zogroth regrets retirement from active duty.â His eyes dim, and his body goes limp. Donna, disgusted, confronts the Meep, saying, âI was right. You are a monster.â
The Meep revels in Donnaâs anger, taunting, âAnd you believed every word I said. You stupid woman! With your weird child!â
Donna, ready to confront the Meep for insulting her daughter, stands defiantly, retorting, âOh, donât you dare!â
The Meep, relishing the confrontation, points its weapon at Donna, threatening, âOh, I dare!â
You quickly rise, positioning yourself in front of Donna, raising your hands in a protective stance. Simultaneously, the Doctor moves across the floor on his knees, hands raised, pleading, âNo, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Butâ Last-minute evidence! Me.â
He emphatically points to himself and exclaims, âWhy are there two more two-hearted species on this planet? Unless we are part of a strategy by the Wrath Warriors to outfox you? If you kill me and her and fail to take this family hostage, youâll never find out, will you?â
The Meep hums, then commands the soldiers, âBring them!â
The Doctor stands animatedly, âGood! Now, look, I can suggest a much better way off this planet than a double-bladed dagger drive. âCause that thing is gonnaââ
His sentence remains unfinished as he is abruptly knocked out by a UNIT soldier. The Meep cackles triumphantly as the rest of you are ushered into the back of a truck, alongside the unconscious Doctor.
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
On the truck's floor, the Doctor lay with his head resting on your lap, his unconscious form a testament to the challenges you faced. Your fingers moved soothingly through his untamed, spikey hair, offering a quiet comfort amid the tension.
Donna observed the scene, her curiosity getting the better of her. "How long have you two been together?" she inquired, attempting to place where she might have encountered you before.
"A good number of years," you replied, choosing to keep the more intricate details to yourself, considering the Doctor's timeless nature.
Rose, equally intrigued, posed another question, "Are you two married?"
A snort escaped you. "Nope. I don't think he wants that with me if I'm being honest."
âWhy?â Rose pressed on.
Your gaze drifted, and you sniffed softly. "Iâm all sorts of wrong for him. And sometimes, it scares me. The emptiness I see in my eyes,â you admitted, vulnerability seeping into your words. Your eyes lingered on the Doctor as you continued, âThe Doctor is brilliant. He is truly brilliant. After all heâs been through... he deserves everything good and more⊠more than me.â
As your confession lingered in the air, the Doctor began to stir awake, bringing a momentary hush to the truck. His eyes fluttered open, and a low groan escaped him as he gradually sat up, settling next to you.
Donna eyed the Doctor with suspicion, her narrowed gaze fixed on him. "Who are you?" she questioned, her tone demanding answers.
The Doctor, still feeling the effects of his earlier unconsciousness, touched the back of his head with a wince. "Iâm just passing by," he nervously replied, attempting to deflect her inquiries.
Undeterred, Donna redirected her attention to her mother, Sylvia, and pressed on, "Do you know him?" Sylvia, in an attempt to conceal any familiarity, shook her head, responding, "No."
Donna, frustrated and puzzled, continued, "You act like you know him. Ever since he arrived, itâs likeâ" She heaved a heavy sigh, abruptly halting her train of thought. "Iâm so stupid!" she declared, voicing her self-reproach.
Shaun quickly reassured his wife, "No. No, youâre not."
Donna shook her head, lost in contemplation. "We could be living somewhere far away from here. Monte Carlo. Switzerland." She then turned to her daughter Rose, who sat beside her. "And youâ And youâd be safe, Rose." Donna pulled Rose into a comforting side hug. "Itâs all my fault. Gave away that lottery money."
The Doctor, unable to resist his curiosity, interjected, "Why?"
Donna shot him a glare. "Because. There are places out there where people are in danger. And in pain. And fear. And I could help. Just felt the sort of thing he would do." Her words hung in the air, revealing a sense of duty and compassion that drove her actions.
Abruptly, the truck jolts to a stop, resulting in the Doctor colliding with one of the crates, eliciting a pained groan. You swiftly move to assist him. The truck door swings open, and a stern voice commands, "Out!"

MILLSON WAGNER STEELWORKSÂ
NORTH LONDON, â EVENING, DECEMBER 2023
The UNIT soldiers briskly led you towards the heart of the steelworks, where the Meep's spaceship had strategically landed.
"It didn't choose the steelworks by accident. It came here to be mended," the Doctor remarked as the group neared the spacecraft. The Meep made a grand entrance, seated on a makeshift throne of steel carried by a procession of UNIT soldiers. With its menacing teeth and booming voice, it declared, "Hail to the Meep!"
A hypnotic chant echoed through the steelworks as multiple officers joined in unison, "Hail to the Meep. Hail to the Most High. Hail to the Meep. Hail to the Most High."
"Human scum, behold my vessel to the stars! Far beyond your tiny, grasping minds," Beep the Meep declares with an air of arrogance. You respond with an eye roll of annoyance, and the Doctor shakes his head while humorously interjecting, "I name this ship the Delusions of Grandeur."
Beep the Meep growls in protest, "Meep."
"You can't fire those engines. Not from here. A dagger drive gets its energy by stabbing down. It would extract, ooh, five square miles? The whole of London town burnt as fuel," the Doctor explains, his tone serious and concerned.
Rose, wearing a frown, adds, "But that's nine million people."
"A great day for Meepkind. And the start of a new reign of terror as the Meep return to the stars for revenge. And feasting. Now, activate the initializers," the Meep commands, its voice dripping with malevolence.
A disciplined UNIT soldier swiftly responds, "Initializers activated."
The low hum of the spaceship's engines reverberates through the steelworks as the Meep grins with an evil glint in its eyes, proclaiming, "Brandish the gravity stanchions."
"Gravity stanchions brandished," announces a focused UNIT soldier as the prongs of the spacecraft forcefully dig into the ground.
"Calibrate the flight deck," the Meep commands with a sense of authority, intensifying the tension in the air.
A disciplined UNIT member announces, "Flight deck calibrated."
The Meep, perched on its steel throne, commands, "Take the prisoners on board! Then Iâll decide which one to eat first. Hail to Meep!"
The rhythmic chant of the hypnotized UNIT soldiers fills the air, "Hail to the Most High! Hail to the Meep!" while the Meep indulges in a sinister cackle, reveling in its delusions of grandeur.
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
The liftgate slams shut, transporting you to a different floor. Thoughts of subduing the UNIT guards swirl in your mind as the lift grinds to a halt. As the gate creaks open, Shirley appears, wearing a mischievous grin. "Evening, boys."
With swift precision, she activates a concealed device beneath her wheelchair, firing two darts at each soldier. The tranquilizers swiftly take effect, rendering the guards unconscious.
"You've got weapons in your wheelchair," the Doctor exclaims, eyeing Shirley with a mixture of surprise and admiration. She glances back at him, a knowing look in her eyes, and responds, "We all have. You've got your girl to thank for that. Come on." With a nod, she leads the way, wheeling herself confidently through the complex.
"Right. You lot, the family, you can get out through that door," Shirley says, gesturing towards the exit on the right. She then turns her attention to you and the Doctor, her tone more serious, "You need to get to the engine control. But the port sideâs guarded, and there's no way around it."
A quick exchange of glances between you and the Doctor precedes his question to Shirley, "So what do we do?"
With a confident smirk, Shirley retorts, "I donât just fire darts, mate." She spins her wheelchair around, revealing hidden capabilities. With the push of a button, two missiles activate and blast through the wall, creating a makeshift path forward. The unexpected firepower leaves you and the Doctor momentarily impressed.
Shirley swiftly directs the family, "You lot run. Iâll fight them off at the lift."
The Doctor tightens his grip on your hand, leading you through the large breach in the wall. The chaotic, metallic environment of the spaceship's bridge unfolds before you. With his trusty sonic screwdriver, the Doctor deftly manipulates the controls, unlocking the gate to the engine control room. As the door creaks open, the two of you step inside, ready to stop the ship from taking off.
The Doctor removes his coat and hangs it on one of the pillars as the ship's system voice declares, âDagger drive systems initializing.â
In a sudden burst of energy, Donna enters the control room panting, "That's enough⊠running. Blimey."
The system voice abruptly announces, âChamber deadlocked.â Panic sets in as the only exit seals shut, leaving the Doctor frustrated. He slams his hands on the door, exclaiming, âNo, no, no, no! I told you to goâjust donât!â
Frantically, he moves about the room, urging, âNo time. Iâve got this. Weâve got it. Weâve got it. You stay there. Donât move, Donna!â
The Doctor and you scramble around, pressing buttons and flicking switches, racing against time as the system voice declares, âStar launch in five minutes.â
Climbing up one of the pillars, the Doctor instructs you while you squat on the other side to manipulate hidden switches. Suddenly, the system announces, âDeadlock sealed.â A flicker of discomfort courses through both of you as the ship's mechanisms react.
âItâs been deadlocked,â you groan, and Donna questions, âWhatâs that mean?âÂ
The Doctor replies swiftly, âIt means, we can do it by hand.â
You move to the far end of the ship, and the system voice chimes in again, âMaxifold bisecting.â A glass pane wall starts dividing the room, separating you from the Doctor and Donna. âYou can stay on that side Doctor, Iââ But then the Doctor rolls under the glass just before it seals, protesting, âOh. No, no, no, no!â
âDouble dagger drive installed and initiated.â
You can feel your eye twitch as you look at the Doctor standing next to you. âOkay, okay. Okay, we can do it with half the room. Thatâs fine.â The Doctor tries to reassure himself and you look at him wondering why he had to end up on your side of the room.
âLet me help.â Donna insists and the Doctor is quick to disagree, âNo! You canât get involved.â
Donna looks at the Doctor with a glare, challenging him and the Doctor tries to steady his resolve, âYou canât!â
It's then your turn to shoot him a pointed look. The Doctor groans and pants in frustration before finally surrendering. He instructs Donna, "Switches, the top ones, the blue ones, flick them all down."
Donna diligently follows his directions, swiftly flicking the switches down, while you navigate to a different section of your side of the room to spin a dial a few times. Despite your efforts, it proves futile, and you slump down in disappointment. The Doctor, leaning defeatedly on a pillar, somberly admits, "We've run out of time."
âIgnition in 230.â
The Doctor sighs with a heavy burden on his shoulders as he confides in Donna, "If there was anything else I could do, but there's one thing left."
"Wellâ Well, then do it," Donna urges, her tone laced with desperation. The Doctor, however, looks down in shame, prompting Donna to insist, "Hurry up and do it! What are you waiting for?"
Pushing himself off the pillar, the Doctor strides over to the glass partition separating Donna from the two of you. "I think⊠all that coincidence was heading here to save London from burning. 'Cause the three of us can stop this ship. Together."
Donna gasps in realization, "Oh."
As you rise and move towards the glass, locking eyes with Donna, you declare, "But it will kill you."
Donna sharply inhales, and responds easily, âOkay.â
The Doctorâs voice cracks as he says, âYouâll die.â
Donna's lower lip trembles, her eyes reflecting the imminent crisis, as she says, "My daughter is down there."
"Ignition in 180."
Tears well up in Donna's eyes, and her voice stammers with fear, "And it's not just Rose. It's nine million people. Who cares about me?"
The Doctor responds swiftly, his urgency palpable, "I do. We both do."
Donna takes a deep breath, mustering courage, and asks, "But why?" She pauses, gathering her thoughts, and continues, "I'm just no one."
The Doctor's expression shifts to one of anger, his eyebrows furrowing as he yells, "No, you are not!"
He takes a few steps back, the weight of the situation evident in his sob and scream, "Why does it have to be this?"
"Entering the final sequence."
The Doctor looks at Donna with a somber gaze, defeated, as he utters the words that trigger Donna's memories, "Westerly. Pelican. Dreams."
Donna is desperate as she says, "I don'tâ Look, I don't care what it is. All right. Justâ just go on and do it, will you?"
"Ignition in 150."
"Tornado. Clifftops. Andante," the Doctor says.
"Get on with it!" Donna shouts.
The Doctor continues, "Grief. Fingerprint. Susurration."
Donna's eyes light up as she begins to remember her adventures, "Oh."
The Doctor and Donna utter the last few words in unison, "Sparrow. Dance. Mexico. Binary. Binary. Binary."
A golden glow emanates from Donna, the metacrisis shimmering through as she regains her memories once more. You and the Doctor press your palms against the glass, witnessing her transformative moment.
"Ignition in 100."
As the glow dissipates, the Doctor anxiously asks, "Are you alright?"
"Ignition in 90."
Donna pants, sighs, and sweeps her bangs away from her eyes as she glares at the Doctor. Inhaling deeply, she says, "I gave away my money."
"Ignition in 75."
The Doctor looks at her, puzzled, "Right, butâ"
Donna, expressing a mix of frustration and anger, interrupts, "I gave away all my money. And do you know why, Doctor? I gave it away to be like you. So I could be kind. So I could be nice. So I could be helpfulâ Iâ"
Donna releases a frustrated growl as the system voice continues, "Ignition in one minute."
Moving her face closer to the glass panel, Donna continues, "I had a subconscious, infracutaneous, retrofold memory loop making me act as soft as you and give away 166 million pounds!"
"Ignition in 50."
The Doctor, wide-eyed, nods in agreement but attempts to refocus on the urgent matter, "Yes, Donna, butâ Destruction of London?"
"Oh, I'll show you destruction, mate," Donna declares, intertwining her fingers before flexing them to crack her knuckles.
"Ignition in 40."
You and the Doctor observe in awe as Donna moves around the control panel with ease. "I'll triple-drive the particle manifesto, overstep the umbilical feed, vindicate the cyberline, and roast the hyperfeeds! Like this!" Donna exclaims, spinning the dial on the lower left of her.
The Doctor navigates about half of the room, deftly flicking switches while instructing, "Maximise the stressfold links!"
"Channel up the booster drive!" Donna commands, pressing a few buttons.
"Inculcate the plexidrones!" You chime in, flicking a few more switches.
"And shatterfry the positrons! Oh yes!" Donna exclaims.
"Twenty, nineteen..."
Donna interrupts, asking, "How long have I got to live?" as she switches off a few controls.
"...sixteen, fifteen..."
All three of you simultaneously answer, "Fifty-five seconds."
"Thirteen, twelve, eleven..."
"The best fifty-five seconds of my life!" Donna exclaims.
"Seven, six, five, four..."
"Because I get to do this!" Donna proudly announces, turning around and simultaneously flicking off several switches.
"Three, twoâ Ignition halted."
You three watch as the panel flies off the wall; the countdown has stopped, and Donna proudly states, "Donna Noble is descending."
"Ignition reverse. Ignition reverse."
"Itâs working!" The Doctor's voice resonates with exhilaration as the tangible effects of the reversed dagger drive unfold before your eyes.
However, your joy is cut short when you notice Donna beginning to falter. Panic sets in, and you urgently cry out, "No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no!"
Swiftly, both you and the Doctor move in unison to catch Donna as she descends, cradling her fragile form in your arms. Donna sighs, her expression reflecting a mix of exhaustion and relief. The Doctor reassures her, "We did it. Sheâs fine. Sheâs safe. You saved her."
Donna smiles weakly, and you add, "You saved them all."
In a moment of introspection, Donna questions, "Why did this face come back?" She turns her gaze towards the Doctor, who responds with a sigh, "I donât know."
"To say goodbye," Donna asserts with a soft smile. She then shifts her attention to you, saying, "Oh, the Stargazer. Iâve missed you."
"Iâve missed you too, Donna, every day," you confess, and the Doctor emits a thoughtful hum.
"Good fun, though," Donna remarks, her chuckles mingling with yours and the Doctor's. The lighthearted moment takes an abrupt turn as Donna's eyes flutter closed, her entire being going limp in the arms of her two closest companions.
A collective sob escapes from you and the Doctor as you sit there, cradling your best friend, a bittersweet mixture of victory and loss filling the air.
Abruptly, the door to the engine control room opens, revealing a cadre of UNIT soldiers with swirling, hypnotized eyes. The air tightens with tension as one of them declares, "We have orders to kill you."
Undeterred, the Doctor retorts defiantly, "Do what you want. This ship isn't going anywhere. You were beaten. By the DoctorDonna." The soldiers, rifles at the ready, cast ominous shadows in the confined space. You resign yourself to the impending threat, feeling the Doctor's protective instinct as he positions himself to shield you.
In a surprising turn, the psychedelic light emitted from the soldiers' eyes screeches and hisses, dissipating into nothingness. Bewilderment echoes through the room, and you join the Doctor in uttering a perplexed, "What?"
Even one of the soldiers can't help but question, "What?"
Donna, roused from her unconscious state, adds her own disoriented, "What?"
The Doctor, his voice tinged with disbelief, softly utters, "You're not dead."
A collective sense of confusion lingers, and Donna, now fully awake, queries, "But how?" as she steadies herself.
After a brief pause, Rose's voice resonates through the intercom, "Can you hear me? Mum? Doctor? Star? I think it's safe for you to come down now."
Donna responds, perplexed, "Rose?"
The Doctor's eyes widen with a sudden epiphany, "Too much power for one person, but you had a child, and the metacrisis passed down. A shared inheritance."
Donna grins, âIt was always there. Shining out of her.â
âAnd she chose her own name,â the Doctor adds.
âOh, the shed! The shed was her memory of the TARDIS. The toys! Every creature we met, she remembered as a toy,â Donna says with a glint in her eye.
You gape, suddenly realizing, âWe are binary.â
âSheâs not. Because the Doctorâsââ
The Doctor interjects, âMale.â
âAnd female,â Donna finishes.
"And neither. And more," Rose says, her voice carrying a warm smile through the intercom.
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
Donna rushes down the stairs, her steps echoing in the cavernous steelworks. Rose meets her halfway, and they share an emotional hug, Shaun joining in the embrace.
You and the Doctor follow suit, descending rapidly to the ground floor. Sylvia awaits, and as you approach, the Doctor wraps her in a jubilant hug. He inquires, âHappy now?â
Sylvia responds with a radiant smile, "My father would be impressed. I have no higher compliment." Laughter of triumph fills the air as you and the Doctor proceed to the nearby control center.
Shirley deftly maneuvers her wheelchair towards you and the Doctor, offering her unique perspective. She addresses the Doctor with a sly grin, âThereâs a word for you, Doctor. And that word is jammy.â
The Doctor responds with infectious enthusiasm, âJam on toast.â He decisively slams a button, activating the intercom. With authority, he speaks into the microphone, âCalling the Meep.â
The Meep's defiant voice crackles through the speakers, âYou forget I still have my ship. And if I have to explode the engines and rupture this world and damn us all to hell, then I will!â A shared glance between you and the Doctor follows, and he graciously hands you the task of flicking the crucial switch.
With a resounding click, the Meepâs cockpit is ejected into the sky, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of the Meep's distressed shrieks. You and the Doctor gaze upward, drawn into the spectacle unfolding against the canvas of the vast night sky.
âThere you go.â The Doctor points with a wry smile, observing the Meepâs cockpit deploying a parachute against the cosmic backdrop.
You feel the Doctor's reassuring grip on your waist as he pulls you into his side. Together, you look up, transfixed by the celestial display. The stars twinkle above, and in that moment, you choose to hope and believe that nothing universe-ending has transpired yet.
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
As the sun ascends on the horizon, casting a warm glow over the scene, the Wrath Warriors stand sternly with the imprisoned Meep, forming an uneasy tableau. You step forward, addressing them with a heavy heart, "Sergeant Zogroth and Constable Zreeg gave their lives, alongside many Earth soldiers."
The Wrath Warrior, resolute in the face of the aftermath, declares, "Their names will be included in the litany of crimes as the Meep atones in prison for 10,000 years." The Meep, defiant in defeat, mutters, "Oh, I will escape and have my revenge. So you beware, Doctor and Stargazer, because thereâs one more thing."
With a determined stride, the Doctor moves closer, inquiring, "Which is?"
âA creature with two hearts is such a rare thing. And to have two of your kind here⊠Just wait till I tell the boss,â the Meep retorts, an ominous promise lingering in the air. The Wrath Warriors and the Meep vanish in a teleportation, leaving a sobering aftermath beneath the morning sun.
The Doctor, caught in contemplation, mumbles under his breath, "Cryptic. I hate that." He takes a deep breath, turning his attention to Donna and Rose with a sense of urgency, "But⊠weâve still gotta fix you two. âCause the metacrisis might have slowed down, but that thing is wrapped around your cortex."
Donna, with an eye roll and a knowing nod, quips, âYes, we know.â
Rose adds confidently, âWe know everything, thanks.â
Donna, in her typical nonchalant manner, shrugs, âAnd you know nothing. Itâs a shame youâre not a woman anymore. âCause sheâd have understood.â
Rose, crossing her arms, asserts with confidence, âYouâve got all that power, but there is a way to get rid of it. Something a male-presenting Time Lord will never understand.â
Donna, ever pragmatic, advises, âJust let it go.â
The unity between mother and daughter becomes evident as Rose takes Donnaâs hand, and together, they release the accumulated metacrisis energy. Shaun interjects with a grin, âLike I said, mate, how lucky am I?â
Rose, with a joyous laugh, concludes, âAfter all these years, Iâm⊠finally me.â
âââââ ââ ââ â âââââ
CAMDEN MARKET, LONDON â MORNING, 2023
Shaun skillfully navigates the vehicle, bringing the group back to Camden Market in London. Earlier, you had informed Shirley about the intention to bid farewell to the Doctor and Donna before returning to headquarters. Shirley responded with a nonchalant, "Sure..." accompanied by a discerning look, rolling away from you in her wheelchair.
The Doctor maintains his characteristic chattiness as he informs Donna, "And UNIT has a splendid insurance policy for damage caused during an alien war. While they sort that out..." Approaching the iconic tall blue police box, the TARDIS, the Doctor gestures towards it, saying, "One last trip?"
"Uh, donât you dare," Sylvie interjects with a pointed look. Donna, casting puppy eyes at both you and the Doctor, laments, âDo you know, I would love to.â She then takes a sharp inhale, sighs, and adds, âBut⊠I have got adventures of my own, bringing up this one.â Donna points her thumb towards Rose.
âCan I see inside?â Rose asks the Doctor curiously, taking a step toward the TARDIS. Donna, however, swiftly moves her away, cautioning, âNo. No! No. No.â
Rose sighs, and Donna playfully waves her finger, âNo. Because summat will go wrong, and youâll end up on Mars with Chaucer and a robot shark. And thatâs actually happened, hasnât it.â
The Doctor gives a sheepish, âOh, yeah.â
âBut I was thinking, we could go and see Wilf?â The Doctor suggests to you and Donna.
Donna then says, âNow that is cheating.â
The Doctor pouts, âJust a suggestion.â
âI mean it, donât you dare.â Sylvie says, and Donna sighs, âBut imagine his face, Mum. Oh, he would be so happy. All those secrets Grandad kept for years. Heâ He thought Iâd never remember. And to see the Doctor. One last time.â
The Doctor and Donna make a puppy face to you and Sylvie, urging you to join them. Sylvie relents and gives in, âOh, all right. But one trip. Thatâs all. Just one.â
The Doctor turns to unlock the door with his key while Donna laughs with glee, âOne tiny, little trip. That is a promise.â
Donna turns to you and the Doctor and gasps in excitement, âItâs like the old days. Just me, the Doctor, and the Stargazer. Together.â She then turns to her family, âIs that all right?â
âYeah, of course it is,â Shaun says confidently with a huge smile.
âWell, a lot of husbands would worry. You know, me, in a box, with another man.â Donna jokes, and Shaun shrugs and shakes his head, âYeah. But not him.â
The Doctor looks somewhat offended, but then Donna shoos him to go inside, âCome on, space man.â
In the quiet aftermath, with Donna and the TARDIS disappearing into the distance, the Doctor notices the unsure expression on your face. He whispers to Donna to go ahead, and she complies, leaving the two of you alone, behind the TARDIS, sheltered from prying eyes.
With a gentle gesture, he wraps an arm around your waist, pulling you closer. He cups your face with both hands, his smile revealing dimples that carry the weight of countless adventures. âThe stars havenât gone out.â
Your raised brows betray a hint of skepticism, âYetâŠâ
The Doctor locks eyes with you, his deep dark brown orbs conveying understanding. As tears well up in your eyes, you break the silence, your voice a fragile whisper, âYou have no idea how bad it gets. How scared I am that all of this is temporary and I lose you⊠and I canât have you.â
âHey. Hey, hey. None of that,â he reassures, his gaze unwavering. âSo far, everything has been leading me back to you. And when the time comes to face it⊠weâll fix it⊠together. I canât lose you again. Not ever again.â
His words linger in the air, a vow shaped by the quiet resilience of a Time Lord who has navigated countless challenges across time and space. You respond with a nod, sealing the unspoken pact, and tenderly kiss his wrists. In return, he draws you closer, planting a gentle kiss on the top of your head.
âWhen this is all over,â he declares, âweâre getting married.â
âWhat?â you screech, caught off guard by the unexpected revelation.
âWe've waited this long. Iâm not spending the rest of my how many years without you,â the Doctor insists, his eyes earnest.
âIs this a proposal?â you inquire, a mixture of surprise and delight in your voice.
âIf you want,â he smirks, playfully nonchalant.
On tiptoe, you reach up to kiss the tip of his nose, a tender acknowledgment, âWe'll see.â The promise of an unwritten future hangs in the air, held by the shared understanding that time and space will unfold their stories together.

THE TARDIS
The Doctor guides you inside the TARDIS and closes the door behind him and both of you are in awe of the major changes of the entire TARDIS. Huge curved white walls with round circles that glow with lights and many ramps that lead to different corridors.
The Doctor hangs his coat on one of the railings as he grins and laughs, âWhoa!â He begins to run around all the ramps with the energy of a little kid as he shouts, âThis is amazing!â
âIt changed! Oh, you clever thing! Look at that!â The Doctor laughs as he finishes his lap around the new interior of the TARDIS. He runs over to the console and smiles, âItâs got this!â
He pushes a lever forward, and the lights within the TARDIS shift to a vibrant orange, casting a warm glow. Your gaze is drawn upward in awe as the ambient hum of the time machine resonates around you. Running your fingers along the railings, you can feel the TARDIS responding, and you affectionately murmur, âHello, sweet thing. I missed you too.â
Amid the luminous atmosphere, the Doctor darts around the console, engaging with switches and buttons on the refurbished device. Donna, observing the transformation, remarks, âItâs still a bit nippy.â
The Doctor protests, âOh, come on!â
Undeterred, Donna concedes with a grin, âAll rightâŠâ Her expression changes as she admires the surroundings, âItâs gorgeous!â Laughter bubbles up from both Donna and the Doctor, who joins in the jubilation, bouncing excitedly.
âItâs cleaner. And itâs grown,â Donna observes, her laughter echoing through the TARDIS.
Making your way to the console, you overhear Donna questioning the Doctor, âBut Iâ I still donât get it. I mean, the TARDIS can change all right. But what about your face? Why did it come back?â
âDoes there have to be a reason?â the Doctor muses, and Donna, with a snort, retorts, âIn your life? Yes!â
With a nonchalant shrug, the Doctor remarks, âWell, Iâm stuck with it now.â He continues exploring the console, fidgeting with excitement, and comments, âOh, this thing is brilliant. Itâs even got a coffee machine!â Glancing at you and Donna, he inquires, âYou want one?â
You shake your head, âNo, thank you, darling.â
âYouâre kidding,â Donna says with wide eyes.
âWith cold milk, yeah?â The Doctor deftly presses a few buttons, and Donna, smiling, says, âWell remembered.â To your delight, a white cup materializes with coffee and cold milk.
He carefully hands the cup of coffee to Donna who says, âThank you very much. Careful. Itâs how I lost my job. Dropped a coffee in the computer.â
To which the Doctor just hums and moves to flick a few more switches around the console as you lean on a railing, to listen to him say, âI really do remember, though. Every second with you. Iâm so glad youâre back âcause it killed me, Donna.â The Doctor clicks another switch as he continues on, âIt killed me, it killed me, it killed me.â
"We can have more days, canât we?" Donna inquires, her tone laced with a mix of hope and curiosity. Her eyes reflect a desire for a future filled with shared moments. Continuing with optimism, she suggests, "I mean, why is it such a big goodbye with you? Why is it one last trip? âCause you could visit. With my family."
The Doctor, absorbed in examining a screw, listens attentively as Donna paints a vivid picture of ordinary yet precious moments. "We could do outrageous things, like have tea, dinner, and a laugh! And Roseâs school play. Well, maybe not that. She canât act. Sheâs terrible. I donât know how to tell her. But the point is, youâve been given a second chance. You can do things differently this time."
Encouraging him to embrace change, Donna suggests, "So why donât you do something completely new and have some friends?"
The Doctor contemplates the idea, responding with a hesitant "Maybe. Yeah." Donna chuckles, savoring the simplicity of their current moment. "Mmm. Like now," she remarks, lifting her cup as if to toast. "Here we are. Having a coffee."
Before the Doctor can respond, Donna's accidental spillage disrupts the calm, eliciting a gasp from her. "Whatâs gonna go wrongâ" Her sentence is abruptly cut off as the spilled coffee interacts with the TARDIS console, resulting in sparks and flames.
With urgency, Donna questions, "Whatâs happening?" The Doctor, swift in his actions, ushers both you and Donna away from the unfolding chaos. The TARDIS groans and whines as its engines protest, and the cloister bell rings ominously in the background.
"We could end up anywhere in time and space," the Doctor confesses, a tinge of uncertainty in his voice. As the atmosphere fills with anticipation, you brace yourself, thinking, "Here we go again."

The ink had dried enough on the final document you were working on duplicating for tonight that you could group them together and place the original papers back in Lucille's hiding place. Tomorrow morning if ever she were to check on them, she would be none the wiser of what had been transpiring over the last two weeks. You repeatedly clenched and unclenched your fingers, trying to get some feeling back into them after writing with barely a pause for break over the last few hours.
"Tomorrow we'll be done with all the documents," you whispered into the silence, feeling Edith's presence nearby as you made your way to Thomas' workshop. "I'll need you to show me where the phonograph cylinders are hidden, and if you know which one has Lucille's demented confessionâŠ"
"I'll show you the way," she confirmed. "And I'll make sure that none of the moreâŠhow do I put thisâŠbloodthirsty spirits don't touch you. They tend to be a bit overly protective of their turf."
"The what?" You froze in place at her mention of bloodthirsty spirits. You had enough of a fright when you'd first "met" her and Enola, you might not survive encountering their less agreeable companions. The feel of someone nudging you from behind had you moving down the corridor again.
"Don't you worry about them, Y/N. I'll do my part to keep them away, explain to them that you're our friend, and you'll put an end to Lucille's lifelong murder spree. It might take time for them to fully understand, but they will."
Once you crossed the threshold to Thomas' workshop, you heard the exaggerated groan that belonged to your fleeting husband. Checking the candle in your hand, there was only about a thumb's worth left.
"Right on schedule," Edith remarked before you felt a nudging sensation on your shoulder. "You know he must really care for you if he's willing to endure being with her for the sake of your safety. Before she made him go back out into the city to find a new wife--well, a new victim, he looked gaunt. Almost like he found his life grotesque. Then he came back here with you andâŠthere was color in his face again. Like he's allowed himself to live while he wooed and married you. There's a happiness in him when he's with you that I only ever saw glimpses of back when I was--"
Her words fell dead, but you had a feeling you knew what the sentiment was. Back when I was alive. Back when I was his wife.
"Why Miss Edith Cushing, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were playing matchmaker with your ex-husband and his current charlatan of a wife," you mumbled, trying not to look to deeply into her words, her testimony of Thomas' time before you. You were already having enough trouble keeping your affections for him at bay whenever he engaged in your routine of a kiss to cap off the night, marking yet another rung on the progression ladder. Lucille's incarceration becoming ever closer.
You decided to hide the duplicated papers in between the pages of his sketchbook, thinking the chances were slim that Lucille would look into them since he only kept concept art of the toys he wished to work on within it. Flipping through the pages to evenly distribute the additional papers, you found a set of sketches that had absolutely nothing to do with toy designs.
The last few pages that he'd worked on in the journal were filled with sketches of you. Some depicted you asleep, others as if the image he had in mind was of you next to him at the dining table. And a full page that showed the bedroom you shared with the baronet, you perched on the edge, a light wash of orange painted on the page, like the scene was illuminated by firelight.
That was the day you arrived at Allerdale Hall. The fleeting moments of desirous bliss you had before reality came crashing down on you.
"You say this marriage is all an act for you both now, but it doesn't look that way. Not from where I'm standingâŠwell, floating." Both of you shared a chuckle before she posed a question at you. "Y/N something I noticed at night when he makes his way back to youâŠthere's an excitement in him, as if he can't move fast enough."
"I--I didn't know about that part," you answered her in hushed tones as you made your way to your shared bedroom, maneuvering the barely moonlit halls with what little candlelight remained. "I usually try not to look at him before we sleep. I fail, of course, but I make the effort. Granting his request for a kiss after he washes the night off of him was already a miscalculation on my part--"
"Completely understandable miscalculation," she quipped, managing to quietly open the bedroom door wide open. "Far too handsome for me to even think of knowing any better back then."
"My thoughts exactly," you mumbled, stepping into the bedroom and disposing of the used candlewax before stretching and allowing yourself to relax from the night's clandestine activities. "Goodnight, Edith."
"I'll talk to the spirits inhabiting the corridor where the cylinders are hidden," she offered, a faint whispering joining her once again before you heard her echoing chuckle. "It seems your husband's rushing to make his way to you. You still have quite the night ahead. Goodnight, my friend."
You could feel the fatigue setting in as you let the tub fill for Thomas' bath before putting away your tools and your blades, mentally preparing yourself for another night of insufficient sleep. Just as you had for the better part of the last two weeks.
Right as you made your way back to your side of the bed and shook your hair loose from your bun, Thomas walked through the open door. You gave him a small smile. "I should be done with the documents tomorrow, Edith and I will work on transcribing the recording cylinders that can lead the case more to Lucille than you two days from now at the latest."
"That's wonderful news, darling," he beamed at you, running his gaze over you briefly before walking toward the bathroom. "I shall see you in a few moments," he told you, his voice echoing across the tiles. A few seconds later the sound of the water sloshing and a sinfully satisfied groan filled the room as he sat into the tub. "You truly are a godsend, my wife. Thank you."
You did your best to ignore the fluttering in your stomach hearing him call you that. You wouldn't hear it for much longer with the progress you were making. "You're welcome," you answered back, fighting back your own sounds of relief once your back hit the bed and you allowed yourself to finally relax for the night.
The cumulative efforts of the last dozen or so days seem to have finally taken its toll on you, your eyes fluttering shut as soon as your head hit the pillow. You hadn't been able to hear the sound of Thomas padding his feet on the floor and back to you, or his little gasp as he saw you in your slumbering state.
"NoâŠ" he sighed, climbing into bed with you. "Y/N, darling, please tell me you haven't completely fallen asleep yet," he said softly, brushing your hair away from your face.
"Hmm?" You leaned in to his touch, feeling a strange sense of comfort when your cheek rubbed against his slightly calloused hand. "'M awakeâŠ" you mumbled, slowly opening your eyes. He gave you a tender smile when your eyes met his, and you couldn't help but return it.
It was only in these moments just before you both went to sleep, your parts in this perilous operation done for the night, that you could allow yourself to almost feel as if you were a normal married couple. Just laying in bed together before going to sleep, sharing a quick goodnight kiss before he pulled you into his arms, cradling you against his chest.
Perhaps even indulge yourself, even for a moment, in the dangerous truth that once this was all over, you would miss these fleeting moments of peace with him. You'd miss how he held you through the night and how you'd wake up wrapped in his arms. How in the last few days he would greet you in the morning with a soft kiss to your nose before you both made your way out of bed and stepped out of your room.
You would miss him when all this was over. When you'd both signed the divorce papers and went on your separate ways, and you were back in your apartment in the city, going to bed alone, you would miss him.
He leaned in and pressed his lips to yours, a small sound coming from the back of his throat as he sighed into the kiss, almost as if he was relieved. "This is the only thing getting me through the nights," he said solemnly, settling more comfortably into the bed as he kept kissing you. "Knowing that this was what awaited me when I get back."
Instead of your usual night routine of a few kisses and he would pull you into his arms, both of you falling asleep to the sound of the other's breath evening out, he moved his body closer, kissing his way to your neck, his hand traveling down the side of your body until it settled at your waist. His lips began to trace along the neckline of your nightgown, the contented hums against your skin combined with the feel of his lips on you had you struggling for breath. "Thomas--"
He kissed his way back to your lips, your shock from his confession letting his tongue slip past your lips and tangle with your own. It was like flames licked all along your body at the contact, both of you moaning into each other's mouths as your fingers weaved into his onyx curls.
"Thomas, wait--" you tried to say, placing your hands on his chest in a paltry attempt to get him to pause for a moment, failing to fight against your eyes fluttering closed and your entire body melting under him the moment his tongue delicately ran along the roof of your mouth.
"I want to lay with you," he said once he pulled away, looking at you with those wide pleading eyes that likened him to a pup asking for a treat. "May I?"
For the love of all things good in this world say yes, you hissed at yourself. You struggled to breathe properly, fighting against every instinct to give in as he repeatedly whispered "please" into your skin. Trying to not let the curiosity and desire consume you and see how far your husband was willing to go.
This was the fantasy you wanted to lose yourself in, where by some miracle when all this was over and you both made it out alive, that you'd found something with each other that neither of you wanted to lose. That after all this perhaps you could have a life together, preferably far away from Allerdale Hall and the figurative and literal ghosts that roam the corridors.
The fantasy that perhaps when you were both safe from Lucille and she was serving her time behind bars, locked away where she couldn't harm anyone anymore, that Thomas might not want to sign the divorce papers. Because maybe he was falling in love, too.
"We've come so far already, we can't afford to lose focus now," you answered him, your voice coming out so small it was like the words all but refused to get through the lump in your throat. "Once all this is done, and we're free of her, you'll be free to do whatever you pleaseâŠwith whomever you please."
The last part left a bitter taste in your mouth, like it physically pained you to say the words.
"You're right," he sighed, leaning away enough so that he could look at you. The expression on his face was akin to that of a wounded pup, making the guilt and regret from your decision overwhelm your system. "Of course." He moved over to his side of the bed, taking a breath before hesitantly touching his fingers to yours. "May I still hold you?"
You didn't think twice, moving over to him and settling into his arms. "Yes, of course." The words refused to be spoken, but you'd found a strange comfort in his embrace. That despite the very real danger you both found yourselves in, and the looming dire consequences of Lucille and the business end of her cleaver if you made so much as one misstep on this perilous endeavor of yours, you felt almost a safety in his warm embrace.
And while no one would ever be able to get you to admit it, it made getting up out of bed in the mornings near impossible. You didn't want to leave him. You wanted him all to yourself.
All the more reason why you needed to be done with this and go your separate ways. You should never be so selfish as to beg him to stay with you and deny him yet another freedom. So much had already been stolen from him.
He brushed a lock of your hair away from your face before asking softly, "How long do you reckon before Scotland Yard comes here after you send the papers?"
"Not long," you answered him, your words full of confidence in your peers. "I'll include a summary of my findings to help them through the papers I've sent them, process them faster. I'll also try and emphasize the urgency of our situation, that we're currently living in a manor with a woman that has the intention and means, not to mention the stomach, to kill me. That we have very good reason to believe our lives are in imminent danger. Should get them moving pretty quick."
"And what are we to do until they arrive?" You could feel him tensing as he anticipated your response.
Bile flooded your stomach from what you had to tell him. "We keep routine." His beautiful face looked so pained as you said the words. "She has to believe that there's nothing wrong, that everything's going to plan. If she gets even the slightest whiff that we're up to something and she kills me. Maybe even you if she finds out that you helped."
He took a shuddering breath, pulling you closer against him so he could press a kiss to your forehead. "Let's hope they move quickly then," he mumbled against you, pressing more kisses on the same spot as he took calming breaths. "I can barely stomach any more of it." His breath hitched at his words, his tone rife with shame.
"I'm sorry," you whispered, placing your hand on his chest, feeling his pulse sprinting like a madman. "This burden shouldn't be on you. Never should have been. She's stolen so much from youâŠ" Your sentiment caught in the back of your throat as you did your damnedest to fight back tears. "I'll do my best to make sure she doesn't steal any more of your life away."
"What if she figures out what we've been up to? Or if she gets impatient and realizes there's no money coming after all this time?"
It took you a moment before you could answer, the implication hanging over you both now like the Sword of Damocles. "Then Scotland Yard will arrive here to a corpse. Either mine or hers."
Tears welled in his eyes as he pulled you closer, pressing a tender kiss to your lips. "I won't let her hurt you, I swear it." He stole a few more kisses from you before he cradled your head against his chest. "You should sleep, I can feel how tired you are."
"Exhausted," you confessed, settling into his embrace, the comfort from his hold blanketing over you as your cheek rubbed against the soft hairs on his chest. "Goodnight, husband."
You couldn't resist calling him that. In a few short weeks you'd never be able to again.
He pressed his lips to the top of your head, stroking your hair before he whispered, "Goodnight, my darling wife."
As the minutes passed, and the only sounds that filled the bedroom were your breathing and the crackling of the fireplace, Thomas found himself unable to succumb to sleep just yet. He was still riddled with so many questions that he couldn't bring himself to ask you quite yet.
What if by some freak accident of a chance, Lucille comes across one of your colleagues when she runs her errands in the city and they were to mention who you were, and what you did before you married him? What if now that she was armed with this new information, she deemed you too much of a threat and decided to do away with you like she'd done with so many other innocent women?
What if she decided to make it even worse, and ordered him to kill you instead? Spout some nonsensical notion that he needed to get his hands dirty this time around so she could see if he still had the stomach for it?
He knew he wouldn't be able to hurt you, that he would be completely unwilling to. But would he be able to protect you against Lucille?
And the question that had him looking upon the coming weeks with a mix of dread and hope, all depending on how you would react if he were to even muster up the courage to say the words: What if you stayed together after this fleeting partnership of yours? What if you were open to exploring what a life together would truly be like? Move away from Allerdale Hall and find a place in the city?
"What if I begged you not to leave me?" he whispered into the empty silence, stroking the backs of his fingers along your cheek. "What if I've fallen in love with my wife, and I want to turn our marriage into something real?"
