Back At It Again
Just as he thought that he would be facing another grueling fight so soon, one in which his fate was unclear, one of the towering bodies fell like a sack of bricks. And standing behind him was none other thanâŚ
âSorey?!â
Sorey was a sight for sore eyes, if there was ever a better descriptor. Mikleo definitely felt worlds more confident in the outcome of this skirmish with his most trusted companion at this side. More importantly, Mikleo was just relieved that Sorey had been unharmed after his own re-abductionâŚ
Mikleo clubbed his nearest assailant upside the head with his staff in their distraction and darted over to Soreyâs side. Happy reunions could wait. For now, they had to dispatch their attackers.
âTheyâre serious about this, Sorey⌠Now that they know youâre involved with me, theyâll try to get you too, so be careful. I donât want to hear any whining when this is over!â
But if they were together, then theyâd be able to overcome it. There was no question about it.
With Sorey at his back, Mikleo leapt into the fray again.
A few good whacks and a lot of bruises and broken bones later, they had finally sent the last man running for the hills.Â
MikleoâŚhad had suffered a few more hits than he wouldâve liked, but considering that the skirmish had followed a long sprint, Mikleo was exhausted. He fought the urge to double over to catch his breath, instead turning back to Sorey to check him over.
âSorey! Are you alright?â
Never wanting to fatally injure any person or thing in a violent skirmish, Sorey was careful to hold back this time, though of which came at the expense of taking a few hits himself. Back dusted and clothing disheveled, at least the fighting was all over now, meeting Mikleoâs concerned mug with a crooked grin of his own.
âYep... all in one piece. Thanks, Mikleo.â
Placing a hand over the otherâs shoulder for slight support--it was going to be a pain returning to the Hive City lifestyle again--he looked around at the dreary taint surrounding them; the semblance to the Lord of Calamityâs owned space was near uncanny, albeit less painful to reside within.
âBut it looks like weâre stuck again. The others may or may not be here this time, but we better find someplace to take a rest in and make plans... Figure our hut from before is still down near the sewers?â
Back At It Again
They had just left Lastonbell. That was the last thing Mikleo remembered.
But Mikleo blinked, and suddenly, the vast, sprawling plains of Rolance had been replaced by a grey skyline. His companions were no longer by his side. Sorey was no longer by his side.
âSoreyâŚ?!â
He looked around frantically for Sorey, for Rose, for Lailah and Edna, for anyone, but as his field of view swiveled about the place he was standing, he realized that this landscape looked very, very familiarâŚ
âThis isâŚHive City?!â
Mikleo calmed down soon after, slowly walking through the streets and taking in the surroundings. Not much had changed since his and Soreyâs last adventure here, though the Malevolence had certainly grown thicker. Mikleo didnât panic, though. If he hadnât succumbed to it yet, then that meant that Sorey, his vessel, mustâve been close byâŚ
But where? How could he find one person in a city of thousands?
Give or take a half hour of walking, Mikleo realized he was being watched. He took note of it, but continued on his wayâor at least he wouldâve if two burly men hadnât stepped in his way.
âYou have no place hereâŚâ
ââŚExcuse me?â
Though he didnât need clarification to catch onto the bad intent. Malevolence poured from the men in thick streams. Were they in the process of becoming hellions? And yet, there had been no hellions the last timeâŚ?!
Mikleo had no time to think about it. The men lunged, and Mikleo jumped back, bringing out his staff.
He had been faring well on his own for the first little while, but more hellionized NPCs had been drawn by the commotion. It was beginning to look like an uphill battle; without full use of his Seraphic artes, Mikleo could do little but rely on melee attacks.
Even that was stretching the limits of his physical capabilities. He had had no choice but to run, and while he managed to throw some off his tail, others still followed. Mikleo ran, turning this corner and that, until eventually, he ran into a dead end.
âGhâŚâ
Of all the timesâŚ! He turned around to find that at least five of the men had followed, and brandished his staff defensively.
âYou still want moreâŚ?!â
â--Exploring these ruins again, Iâve realized that Iâd let myself get too worked up.â
The malices of war had certainly torn Soreyâs heart asunder and filled him with the need to assess himself as the authority of taking all responsibility into his own hands. Though the Shepherd of legend appeared to be of god-like strength to the mere soldiers of whom he had blown back in demonstration of his capabilities, he was certainly just a frail human at his most inner core. All of the senseless killing, the choking taint that rose up and spread over the blood stained soil, and the appearance of the Lord of Calamity that threatened to take all beacons of hope in an instance...
How could he have not wanted to try and correct the wrongs of human kind at their very most flawed?
But Sorey digressed.
If he had tried to follow on through with taking the responsibility of everyoneâs burdens all at once he would have simply, in Ednaâs most blatant terms, âgotten his legs all tangled up.â
So thatâs why he had to reassess himself--thatâs why he could not forget the promises and goals he had set before he had gotten caught up in all of the problems of the world they lived in--because if he didnât take things slow, focusing on one objective at a time, surely, heâd fall before he even made it to his true journeyâs end.
âAll right! Letâs continue on then!â
... But the next few footfalls seemed hazy, Soreyâs vision filtering out of focus as his eyes were coveted with a black veil, ears filled nothing but with a numbing, crackling noise that crescendoed into a high pitched shriek leading to his lost consciousness.Â

The sight of their very faces on the screen was just as shocking to Mikleo as it was to Sorey, Mikleo nearly jumping out of his skin as he watched his face on the screen changing in terror as well.
âWhâSorey!! What did you do?!â
Mikleo was regarded as the more level-headed of the two, so he had to play the part in this moment, right? Regardless of how terrified he mightâve been.
âH-here, give that to me! Give it here!â
Though as he fumbled to take hold of the phone, his finger brushed against a circular object on the screen, and it flashed white for a second with a clickâbefore the screen faded back, Soreyâs and Mikleoâs shocked faces frozen in place.
ââŚHuh?!â
â---..................â Silenced into a dumb-founded stupor, Sorey could barely form a coherent word, jaw-dropped and absolutely horrified at the certain turn of events. All he could do was stare at the cellular device before blinking and turning to the water Seraph beside him.Â
âYou.... donât think... it stole apart of... our souls or something...? Haha...â

âI donât know⌠It seems a little dubious.â
Leaning over Soreyâs shoulder to take a peek at the strange looking thing, Mikleo couldnât begin to puzzle its functions. What did the glass serve? Why did the squares and pictures light up when Soreyâs finger touched them? It was spookyâŚ
âI got one too, butâŚI havenât taken a good look at it yet. Should we really trust the âcharityâ of the scientists? It seems a littleâŚâ
That wasnât to say that he wasnât curious, though. After all, what harm could such a small device do? It wasnât like it would explode or anything⌠Right?
Sitting down beside Sorey, he leaned over for a closer look at the screen. It was then he noticed a peculiar buttonâthe âcameraâ option.
âWhat does this thing do?â
âHmm... but Iâve seen so many people using these regularly. They seem really convenient for those that live here..â Not to mention that having a pocket sized navigation device that could constantly keep you connected to other people with the press of a button was rather miraculous in and of itself. Of course, being the Shepherd, Sorey could connect and communicate with Mikleo in ways only available to them, but not everyone could appreciate that sort of convenience. In a way, things sort of balanced themselves out in Hive with repercussions such as these. Perhaps, that was the point? But then why give everyone else these...? âEh?â Accidentally pressing the button that Mikleo noticed, the screen faded to black, filling Sorey with a sort of momentary dread. In the next second, the camera application was activated, the sight of their faces suddenly appearing before them on the small window absolutely terrifying Sorey.Â
âW-WOAH?! O-our faces?! OUR FACES APPEARED?! How do we stop this?! Wh-whatâs it doing?!â

âItâs rather... generous of the Scientists to give us a gift simply for being here for some time..â Turning over the blue-colored device which was smooth and sleek, did Sorey fumble about trying to turn it on, pressing the screen and its buttons in hopes of getting it to work. Boy, was he a little excited--this world and its fascinating level of technology was something Sorey could never fully grasp in concept... but did he ever love to try and trifle with it! It was almost like exploring in a sense; you could never predict what was going to happen with these sorts of things until you indulged yourself. âThese are called... cellular phones? I think we can communicate from far away with these so long as another person has one! Thereâs even this thing called, uh... GPS? It can actually navigate you anywhere without the need of a map! Like a spiritual guide or something! Isnât that awesome, Mikleo?â

âOh... well, I guess...â
âIâd ask a friend to use their artes and put it out with a water spell?â
A angry Scorpion arrived (CA Intro/Open)
cruelelegance:
Adiane left the tiny, hospital-like room she woke up, in a storm of fury. Her fists clenched, one holding a small figurine of her Gunman. {A social Experiment? How DARE them taking away my Sayrune?!} She never signed up to partake in some weird game that was created by stinking HUMANS. In all her anger, she doesnât even bother paying attention to her new surroundings. A gigantic city, split into different sectors. Each sector having the size of a small city itself. But Adiane just throws that model of her Sayrune at the head of the next unfortunate person thatâs crossing her ways. She might not be able to ride that toy, but at least she can throw it at peopleâs head.
âIâll CUT THEIR HEADS OFF, THE MOMENT THEY OPEN THEIR FILTHY MOUTHS!!â
--And suddenly, a sharp pain struck Sorey against the back of his head, causing him to see stars for a moment as he crouched down to clutch at his throbbing cranium. Picking up the assaulting item in question-- a toy ship?--Sorey was no sooner startled bfy the bellowing of a rather infuriated woman. This wasnât going to end well at all.
âI... Iâm sorry? Um, is this yours, maâam...?â Standing upright with the model in hand, was Sorey almost fearful that his head was about to be severed by such a sharp tongue. I feel like sheâs going to eat me...

The Inkling looked up as the much taller person spoke to him and bent down to meet his height. This was⌠confusing, to say the very least. What was going on? This was just bizarre in every single possible sense of the word. The boy scuffed his show on the gravel, looking down in slight embarrassment.
ăăł:彥 â  âWell, yeahâŚÂ âs supposed to fire a lot more ink, though. Like- a lot more. âNuff to cover a ton of ground. But this is just⌠insultinâ, really. I feel insulted.â He briefly explained. The weapon in his hand also wasnât as big as some of the other weapons back in Inkopolis, it was arguably bigger than the N-Zap, though, but that could be debated.
âYeah, helpâd be pretty nice, thanksâŚâ Well, at least this was better than nothing, despite how awkward it felt for the Inkling.
âInk, huh...â Like.. a squid then? Or was that a sort of octopi reference instead? Come to think of it, this child kind of... resembled a sea creature now the he took a closer look. Such... interesting tendrils coming out of his head. âWell, Iâm sure things will work out. If you fulfill some requirements, sometimes people are allowed to get their belongings back. Not too sure what those certain requirements are, though. Uh, Iâm Sorey, by the way. Iâve been here for several months now..â Starting them off on a casual walk, careful to watch his stride in coincide to those shorter legs tagging beside him, Sorey could only offer his kindness and aid to someone just thrown into a similar situation. Not to mention how young they were... all in all, he was just too much of a meddler to let something like this go. âWere you given an apartment number or anything like that? If not I can at least show you to the right district..â

Taint
Soreyâs hand was warm, his grip firm. It was a comforting feeling; a warmth that chased away the chill of the Taint.
âThe us from an alternate worldâŚ? InvadersâŚ? Is that even possibleâŚ?â
But how could it not have been, when two Soreys stood before him? When the one that had tried to corrupt him suddenly charged with the intent to kill?
âSorey!â
He made to move after his friend, but his arms felt so heavy and his legs would not obey him, threatening to collapse on him again. Was it the shock? Or the overwhelming Taint that had been nearly forced into him?Â
Nngh⌠Move⌠MoveâŚ!
Watching his own Sorey succumbing to his darker counterpart filled Mikleoâs heart with dread, and it was the desire to protect that finally forced his protesting limbs into action.Â
âUnleash the double stream! Twin Flow!â
Jets of water burst forth from thin air, jutting in between the sparring doubles. Mikleoâs assault didnât end thereâstalagmites of ice erupted from the ground, acting as a wall to screen them both as Mikleo ran to Soreyâs side.
âThatâs enough! We need to retreat! We canât beat him like this!â
Just when Sorey felt his arms about to give out from the searing pressure pushing down on him, no sooner was the doppleganger finally swept away by a furious rush of water. One of Mikleoâs artes, no doubt, it gave him the time to hoist himself off of his back, suddenly breathing heavily as if he had been holding his breath this entire time. That other Sorey... he was on a completely other level of power!
âNngh... thanks.. Mikleo...â Forcing himself back on to shaken legs, Mikleo was by his side and ready to flee almost immediately, taking his suggestion to heart and giving a nod. He felt so sick, and his body was past its normal limits... He wanted nothing more than to vomit and collapse, but now wasnât the time... Not when they were both in serious danger. âL-letâs go..!â
A flint? Start a fire? What was wrong with this kid? Was he even being serious?
âChill the hell out, kid. Thereâs no need for that.
How would you plan on starting a fire in the middle of a city anyway? BesidesâŚthis place is filled with smokers. One of them is bound of to have a fuctioning lighter anyway.â Â
âE-eh..?!â Almost baffled by the sudden turn around, Sorey tried to recover, bowing his head just slightly as he choked over his own words.
âYou...didnât want to start a fire..? Sorry, I just assumed... um..â Well this wasnât going smoothly at all..
what better way to celebrate fatherâs day than to smoke a cigarette? too bad his lighter had just run out. fuck. oh well, time to finally socialize.
âanyone got a lighter or something? pretty please?â
âUm... a lighter..? Oh, did you mean flint? I could get some and start a fire if you needed one!â

Taint
âNnhâ!!â
Ah⌠Of course. When a Shepherd fell to the Taint, all the Seraphim under him would follow. Sorey was aiming toâ!
âSâŚSorey! Stop itâŚ!â
But nothing he could say would deter the dark Shepherd from continuing, the pain and discomfort of the Taint seeping inâ
No!
But he couldnât fight back, rendered helpless by the iron grip around his neck and the suffocating Taint. Was this itâŚ? Would he become a tainted Seraph? Would he become a dragonâŚ?
SoreyâŚ
âMIKLEO!!!â
All of a sudden, both Taint and choke hold relented, Mikleo falling to his knees as he was released, coughing as his lungs begged for air. An outstretched hand entered his peripheral visionâSoreyâs hand.
What
But this Sorey was, without question, the one he had grown up with, his emerald eyes still so bright and shining.Â
âSâŚSorey?!â He looked to and fro between Sorey and his dark doppelganger. âWhatâŚwhatâs going on?â
Seeing Mikleo deranged and confused, Sorey pulled him up regardless, standing firmly in front of him as his eyes never left the sight of the doppleganger before him. The oozing taint emanating from his being--from every pore--it was unsettling. To think that the Sorey from another alternate possibility would have fallen so deeply into despair and corruption...
 âWhatâŚwhatâs going on?â
âThese are... the invaders, Mikleo. Theyâre the us of another alternate world! You canât be fooled by his appearance!â
âWhatâs that? And whoâs to say you arenât the replica? That you arenât the failed possibility? You ignorant little Shepherd... you have no right to talk about me so passively!â
With that, the other charged with malicious intent to harm, Sorey taking the leap forward off of his dominant heel to meet swords in battle. It was dangerously even, if not in the favor of the alternate--their exchanges always leaving a painful numbness soaring through Soreyâs sword arm as he fought to power through the taint already effecting his own being.Â
It hurt... it felt as if his insides would be crushed each and every single time that darkness seeped in through his skin and into to his soul.. but he had to keep fighting. He had to push back this dangerous force that sought to take away one of the only people Sorey cared for most in this universe!
If I fail, not only will I meet a similar fate, but Mikleo will--!
âUuagh..!â Thrown backwards in defeat of their current skirmish, and back hitting the pavement hard, Sorey could not leave himself vulnerable for even another second as he brought his sword up defensively, squaring off against the doppleganger who pushed blades in attempt to reach his throat.... âI... I wonât...--!â
âIâll end you... and reclaim this world...!â

ăăł:彥 â-  This is waaay too weird. Like, abnormally strange. All that this Inkling remembered before arriving to this unfamiliar place was that he was excited for the upcoming (yet delayed) Splatfest, cast his ballot into a team, and participated in a couple Turf Wars until he was tired enough to go to sleep.
Suddenly he finds himself here, at some giant city arguably bigger than Inkopolis, being talked to some scientist that didnât look like an Inkling at all, or anything else for that matter. He just looked strange. No tentacles, barely anything resembling anything that heâs seen before.
But what worried the male Inkling even more was the fact that he was suddenly limited. Only able to turn into a squid three times? Given a weird excuse for an ink gun that barely even shoots ink at all? As far as heâs concerned, he felt⌠lost and sorta hopeless. He just hoped that something would be clear to him soon.
He used the gun to shoot a couple ink pellets that only made a tiny splatter on the ground. That was depressing. Now what? The Inkling stood around in the very small crowd, looking for someone to help him out. So suddenly, he called out to anyone.
âEh⌠Hello?â âŚWait. What did he just say? That obviously wasnât Inklish at all. What was going on?!
When wandering about Hive, it was easy enough to stumble upon newcomers, and even easier to spot them. Always looking so uncertain and afraid... but who could blame them? This place truly wasnât for the faint-hearted. And Sorey could sympathize, too, given that he, himself, had been a greenhorn several months past. However, even in his instance, there had been those to extend kind words and suggestions to him, so it was only fair that he give back in return. Thatâs why he was so quick to jump to the aid of others, giving them that little push in the right direction or what have you. (And also because Sorey had a penchant for meddling.) This time, it was another child--and a rather unique looking one at that--tendrils tied back like hair would as he donned a colorful gun of a kind Sorey had never seen before. Worried that the childâs intentions be skewed, the weapon was actually nothing to be worried for; it shot only a few instances of what looked like colored splatters, a pleasant surprise of which brought an intrigued grin to the Shepherdâs lips. Â
âWoah, that was surprising.. does your weapon fire paint..?â Striding over and bending his knees to the childâs height, Sorey offered the most sincere of smiles, making sure to exude not even a hint of uncertainty as he looked at those lost, large eyes before him. âDid you need help? Iâve been here awhile, so...â
