Don't forget, tomorrow night (04/18) visiting artist Sondra Perry will give an artist talk at the IMRC Center at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Through the use of video, installation, video-game software, and performance, Sondra Perry’s work probes the relationships between, identity, technology, politics and violence within the contemporary black experience. Perry states, "...My process is improvisational and holds no consistent aesthetic shape...Using materials and pre-existing media in the vehicles of performance and video production creates a space for the uncanny nature of the thing or object...The ability to strip, expand or abstract content of its form/identity, material, geological, digital, cultural, and physical is powerful and has the ability to be a radical act." On Tuesday, April 4th at 7p.m., artist Gedi Sibony will present his work as a part of Tuesdays at the IMRC, the UMaine Intermedia MFA program’s visiting artist lecture series. Gedi Sibony was born in New York City and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His work is in the collections of the MCA Chicago, MoMA, Carnegie Museum of Art, SFMoMA, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Gedi Sibony’s constructions draw from the tradition of minimalism in their pared down aesthetics and conceptions of sculpture as self-contained conceptual objects. Unlike the highly polished works of artists such as Donald Judd or Ad Reinhardt, Sibony’s objects adopt an impoverished style and are often made from found materials such as cardboard, plastic sheeting, and wood. Through these media, which are associated with both construction and debris, Sibony’s work elevates the humble qualities of everyday ‘stuff’ to create instances of poetic beauty. Artist and Intermedia MFA student Eleanor Kipping @elfelicia will give an artist talk at the @imrccenter on Friday, February 10th at 1pm. Brown Paper Bag Test, her recently finished installation will be open for viewing from February 7th to February 11th between 12:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at the IMRC Center located in Stewart Commons at the University of Maine. Viewings are free and open to the public. Throughout #blackhistorymonth, the UMaine Multicultural Center will host a series of events that celebrate and highlight African American history and culture. Brown Paper Bag Test is a socially engaged installation that addresses issues of discrimination within the black community based upon skin complexion and comparison of shade, formally known as colorism.
