Through my body of work, I wish to explore the relationship between humans and nature. The facets of each structure of the body lend themselves beautifully to winding vines and unfurling petals. Flowers have a delicate, yet complex presence that echoes the characteristics of human personality. They complement one another. Within my work, I highlight the harmonies between complexity and intimacy in combination with humanity and nature.

I have kept my pieces small and have made it my objective to make many of them so that the viewer can be immersed in a variety of color and line, which, when examined closer, reveal intricate floral elements. My entire concept was derived from explorations occurring slightly before our guest critique. Following my statement of intent, I dropped the concept of Ebru. It was not working as quickly as I had hoped it would. Someday I will find the right recipe for it.

Research that I have conducted since starting this body of work has inspired me to push my ideas further and create more complex and colorful forms. Colossal was an excellent resource for ideation. I was also able to create photos like the one pictured with a website called deepart. I plugged in a photo of myself and combined it with one of my previous drawings. It got me thinking about what I could accomplish with the markers. I was having a good amount of fun experimenting with cornstarch, water, and paint, but I was not getting the results that I thought I would. Everything came out fairly faded and would only “print” on newsprint because it is unsized paper. I have altered my goals to focus on my maximalist floral drawings incorporating elements and characteristics of the human figure and personality.

My final body of work will be at least 4-5 more pieces than I already have completed. Materials used will be paper, pencil, prismacolor markers (0.1, 0.8), and chartpak markers. They will be hung on the gallery wall in a square format. My personal time table will include 10 hours per week devoted to drawing and research. Before the next in-progress critique, I expect another 1-2 works will be completed.

It’s been difficult to manage everything when it comes to drawing and I’m heavily worried about my hours. A lot has been going on. I almost wasn’t able to continue to my student teaching experience to graduate in the Spring. I’ve been devoting all of my time to the demands of my student teaching and education responsibilities that I haven’t even painted in a week... I’m worried that my senior show will be lacking because I’d already decided it would showcase painting.
