Dear Diary, So what’s with all the dead flowers? What’s the appeal here? It was an urge to start drawing after completing an illustration course and there happened to be a dried rose on my desk, which I’d been saving for a special occasion. I’m no hoarder but I tend to keep flowers past their life because I believe that life goes on past the point of having moisture, flexibility and a sweet aroma. Sounds a little creepy. Flowers have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. I’m attracted to the smell of dried flowers. You could say it comes from having native Australian flowers in the house as a child. Any sort of flora is usually long lasting in Australia. The harsh, hot and dry climate produces some of the hardiest plants on earth. They’re woody and smell like the earth. I appreciate the hardiness of flowers, the organic smell as they decay and dry. Sometimes fresh flowers can be overbearing, pungent and force to be looked at. They’re the life and soul of the party. Dried flowers are the wise old soul sitting in the corner, or in the shade of a tree. They are mysterious and are full of stories. For me this is the thing I am attracted to most.
