The camera belonged to Pierre Gilliard, a graduate of the University of Lausanne, who taught French for thirteen years to the children of Emperor Nicholas II.
According to the recollections of Gilliard himself, he bought the camera shortly after moving to St. Petersburg, at the very beginning of the 20th century.
With a Kodak camera, Pierre Gilliard, who in 1913 became the mentor of Tsarevich Alexei, photographed members of the royal family both in the Alexander Palace, where the Romanovs mostly lived, and in Livadia, where they rested in the summer, and in Tobolsk. Gilliard decided to go to Siberia with the Romanovs and rode with them to Siberia, where in April 1918 he took the last photograph: Nicholas II and his five children sitting on the sloping roof of a village greenhouse.
“Pierre was always there,” says Iraida Bott, deputy director for scientific and educational work of the Tsarskoye Selo museum. - He filmed all breakfasts, dinners and walks, filmed Nikolai and Alexei. Only thanks to Gilliard's photographs one can understand: father and son were close, they went ashore together, talked. The important thing is not the professionalism of the photographs, but the fact that it is a document invaluable for history, which gives us the opportunity to understand his relationship with the royal family through the prism of Gilliard's textual memories. "
The photographs taken with the Kodak Bulls-Eye were first published in Pierre Gilliard's book Thirteen Years at the Russian Court: Emperor Nicholas II and His Family, published in 1921. The camera itself was kept for a long time in Switzerland (original paper photographs are still kept there), where the French teacher returned a few years after the murder of the royal family. Subsequently, the camera was donated by Gilliard to his goddaughter, whose son handed it over to Tsarskoe Selo in August 2015.
