LIES LIKE WILDFIRE

while at school, this book caught my eye thanks to the beautiful cover art. (i never was able to abide by the "don't judge a book by its cover" rule)

the plot seemed interesting so i picked it up! Unfortunately for me, the best things about this book were the cover and the synopsis.

overall, it wasn't a terrible read (meaning that i did eventually get through it) however the actual plot of the book didn't really begin until midway through.

im not sure if this book was meant to be targeted at a younger audience or if it was simply poorly written, but to me there was something that seemed elementary about the writing. the characters were generally likable but lacked depth aside from the main character, hannah (who was unlikable, in my humble opinion.)

there were many times that i was reading and just had to stop for a moment, because it was either cringe-worthy, or i had to take a second to absorb what the narrator was saying.

overall, i was disappointed by this book. i give it points for originality and a unique cover, but i can't give much praise beyond that.

A LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY

okay so to start, I had already read a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue which is the first book in this little ongoing series. I LOVED both that book and this one. A lady’s guide center's around a young girl named felicity who is an aspiring doctor circa 17th century Europe. 

In addition to the main characters in the first novel, this one introduces new characters. all of which are incredibly diverse and well written. In this series Mackenzie Lee abolishes all of the stereotypes usually presented in period pieces such as these. 

Mackenize Lee’s books are ones that I will always continue to recommend to people looking for adventure books with diverse characters. it includes poc, LGBT, asexuality, disability, and the ideas of defying gender norms of the time. its really IMPOSSIBLE not to fall in love with the characters in any of her books.

another bonus is pirates. if you like pirates as much as my girlfriend does you will like these books. 

Mackenzie Lee and her stories are always a 100/10 rating from me. if you want plot twists and fun banter and amazing characters these are a must read!! plus there are like four of them all with the same characters, just different plot lines. who doesn't  love that?!
