Imagine Bruce having an eating disorder because he doesn't understand why he should feed such a monster
He doesnāt know how it starts.
He doesnāt realize that heās putting less and less food onhis plate, that more and more is being left.
Heās always hungry once he comes back to himself, but tiredenough that itās easier to just collapse into bed than consume calories.
He knows the Other Guy needs more food- significantly morefood- and with the amount heās been changing lately, he really should be eatingmore, but heās so tired of this andhonestly, he just wants to sleep and forget about the people he hurt.
He starts working through meals, making excuses about hisweight loss and pretending that he doesnāt feel hungry every goddamn day.
Clint leaves a plate of food in front of his door once-roast pork and mashed potatoes, the s cent mind-numbingly good- and Brucerealizes he has a problem when he almost throws the plate across the room.
He eats five bites and nearly throws up.
If heās okay, then the Other Guy will be okay.
If he doesnāt have enough to eat, the Other Guy wonāt.
If he doesnāt have the energy to transform, then no one getshurt.
He doesnāt realize heās hurting himself until he nearlycollapses during a briefing, arms wrapped loosely around his stomach.
āBruce? Hey, big guy. Come on, I hate briefs as much as youdo, but we canāt just fall asleep.ā Tonyās trying to make jokes, but he looksworried, and Bruce can see that the rest of the team isnāt too far behind.
āIām fine, Iām fine.ā He manages to argue, pulling himselfto his feet shakily. āJust didnāt sleep enough last night.ā
āMore like didnāt eat enough.ā Clint murmurs to Natasha, andBruce feels himself fill with rage. How dare they insinuate that heās nottaking care of himself? They donāt understand, they donāt know why heās trying to stop the monster that he is-

Bruce wakes up two days later in SHIELD Medical, hooked toan IV and significantly less pale than he had been previously. Clint islounging by his bedside, polishing some arrows and half-watching something onhis laptop.
āWhat happened?ā Bruce asks as he tries to sit up, startspulling at the wires around him.
āWhoa there. Could you think of anything less clichĆ© to say?Or do, for that matter? Stop pulling at the IV, you need it.ā Clint settles hishands on top of Bruceās with a smile. āYou havenāt been eating enough. Weāreworried. You- um- you passed out during the briefing, and then got angry. Youwere mid-change when you collapsed.ā
āDid I hurt anyone?ā He mumbles, instinctively wanting toknow how many deaths to blame himself for tonight.
āJust yourself, Bruce. Tonyās set up a few appointments. Youneed to start eating.ā
āIf I eat, I hurt people.ā

āIf I eat, I hurt people.ā
This is the best way he can explain it, his rationale fornot taking care of himself properly, that one life is not more important thanthousands.
āYou know thatās not true. You can help people, so many morethan you hurt, but thatās hard to do when you donāt eat.ā His therapist, surprisingly a SHIELD employee that Bruce had taking a liking to, says calmly. āYouāvehelped everyone on your team. Youāve saved lives with your discoveries. Do youthink you could do that now, when youāre starving yourself?ā
Bruce shakes his head.
-
āItās good to see you.ā Clint grins across the table as hepiles a plate full of steak, potatoes, gravy, and green beans. Bruce takes asmall spoonful of mashed potatoes and some green beans, trying very, very hardto not let his hands shake.
Natasha eats delicately, almost over proper, until Clintputs a hand on her back and whispers something into her ear. She relaxesslightly and slumps, exhaustion seeping into her features almost instantaneously.
Tony eats quickly, talking in between bites with his handsflying around. Silverware clatters around him as he tries to show off hisnewest invention using only cutlery, and Bruce grins at his enthusiasm.
Thor is almost as rambunctious as Tony, shoveling food intohis mouth and laughing at everything, but somehow never spilling.
Bruce realizes that heās overanalyzing and tries to bringhis fork to his mouth, but the only thought he has is that they donāt havemonsters inside them.
Natasha isnāt feeding death.
Steve isnāt causing harm by helping himself to more dessert.
Tony doesnāt have to worry about choosing between his ownlife and everyone elseās.
āBruce.ā Natashaās voice catches him by surprise, and herealizes that she and Clint are the only two people left in the room. āFeedingyourself doesnāt harm others. I know you think that taking care of yourselfmeans that you let other people get hurt. I still think that sometimes. But weneed you alive, and we want you to be okay.ā She runs a hand through his hair, briefly, and then leaves with Clint.
Bruce cleans his plate.
