I hate to even talk about season 5 in this much detail because I honestly want to eject it from my memory, but did anyone notice that when Jonathan and Nancy were stuck in that room, calling for help, that Nancy called for Steve, yet Jonathan called for Dustin? Regardless of who you ship together, you have to admit that Jonathan was behaving irresponsibly. This moment has been used by us Stancies as evidence of their bond, but if you actually look at Jonathan's behaviour, you'll find yourself disliking him more and more. I'd go as far as to say I hate him. We saw what Will experienced (apparently the Duffers didn't because they gave us hardly any information in season 5 whatsoever) and as his brother, Jonathan was there. Don't make the mistake of thinking I mean this in an emotional or supportive context- there is an obvious bond between the two. I don't view this as as a result of anything Jonathan has done in the show. It is completely normal to be close with your siblings, especially when that same sibling was present throughout all of your major trauma. However, when it comes to Jonathan's actions, what he controls and decides on doing, they are consistently childish and immature. He left Will alone on Halloween despite knowing what he had gone through, all to attend a party that he wasn't necessarily comfortable in. He left his brother, a child, to chase a girl- a girl he barely had any contact with during said party apart from taking her home. Whether Jonathan was a minor or not, he is the older, more mature one in the relationship and should be a lot more caring. The scene in season 5 once again proves that he hasn't faced any significant character development. Rather than prioritise Nancy and their safety in general, he calls for the child in the situation. A literal child. He would rather keep his overinflated ego in tact than admit that he needs help. He would rather put a child at risk than look weak next to another man. I find it odd - and genuinely concerning- that no one relates this to the fact that he saw what his brother went through. What his friends went through. What CHILDREN were forced to face, and yet this is seemingly irrelevant to him? If you think that this man is at all a hero in any context, you need to seek serious help. I find that members of the ST fandom tend to settle for the bare minimum, particularly when it comes to this creature, and I can't stand it. Even if you aren't a stancy, his behaviour is disgusting for someone that is supposed to be a supportive figure. If you cannot separate your feelings about a ship to acknowledge that- once again, seek serious help. note: This isn't at all hate towards Charlie. He is amazing at what he does, and it's a shame he has been forced to portray someone so bland and unlikeable.
I'm tired of the talk about Nancy and Steve becoming like Karen & Ted when it's explicitly stated in the show that that would have been Nancy & Jonathan's fate...
That wasn't just explicitly stated. That was conveyed multiple times, especially during season 5 with how miserable Nancy/Jonathan became as a couple prior to their break-up. Nancy was getting drunk like her mother (at least that was the takeaway from the dialogue in the melting room scene), and Jonathan made himself emotionally unavailable like Ted (whether that was through Jonathan getting stoned on Purple Palm Tree Delight, refusing to visit Nancy in the hospital to offer her comfort after what happened to Nancy's parents and Holly, or else engaging in his one-sided pissing contest with Steve instead of actually putting in the effort to be a better boyfriend to Nancy and fix his relationship with her). Both the show and the tie-in novel One Way or Another placed a heavy emphasis on how Nancy no longer felt supported by Jonathan (much like how Karen doesn't feel supported by Ted) and that Jonathan was projecting his issues/insecurities/negativity unfairly onto Nancy, to the point she was internalizing it. That's also including how neither of them were communicating properly, resentments were building up on both sides for multiple reasons, and neither of them could relate to each other to the point they were being dishonest about innocuous details.
In the end, Jancy became more like Ted/Karen than Stancy ever did.
That damn camera.
I don't know about you peeps, but it's annoying how fans have downplayed Jonathan's behavior in season 1.
Like, I can't exactly blame them entirely. The narrative goes out of its way to lessen the blow.
It literally makes Steve destroying his camera a bigger deal than Jonathan taking pictures of his friends and Nancy without their consent.
Oh, Jonathan is poor, so by default, he is virtuous. And Steve's a bad man for destroying his property because Jonathan wouldn't be able to replace it easily. Barf. They really want us to be sympathetic to Jonathan's plight and disregard how he violated both Steve and Nancy's privacy.
I mean, even when he does "apologize," he just doubles down and attacks Nancy's choice of boyfriend. Upset that he got caught and tries to pin the blame on Steve for the situation that was literally his own doing.
Like Steve did some bad shit in season 1. Using queer as a slur, being complicit in slut shaming Nancy, insulting Jonathan's family when his kid brother is missing. But breaking the camera? 100 percent agree with it actually, weird to read people say that was going too far.
Like characters are tools and their actions send a message to the audience.
Steve messed up in season 1, and he gets punished for it, but he also cleaned up after himself. He gets his ass kicked and then he breaks up with his friends, cleans the graffiti off the theater, and rushes to apologize to Jonathan. The story lets us know that everything Steve did was not okay.
But that isn't what we get from Jonathan's story. Jonathan makes no sacrifice or is truly punished for his actions. No, actually, he gets rewarded. He gets rewarded in a way that spells it to the audience that he actually didn't do anything too bad.
His pictures reward Nancy and Jonathan in proving the existence of the Demogorgon. He gets to win a fight against his "bully." And then what kills me the most, is that Steve buys Jonathan a new camera! It's a way to implicitly tell the audience that what Jonathan did wasn't a big deal and it was Steve who overreacted. That Steve feels guilty and so, Steve is the party that was in the wrong in that confrontation.
And having Steve take the brunt of the blame for the Jonathan and Steve conflict really does hardwire fans into forgiving Jonathan rather easily even though he doesn't do anything to earn it.
Jonathan really is THE CHARACTER that did absolutely nothing and still gets rewarded for it.
And that is bullshit. How the narrative is trying to gaslight the audience that taking pictures of people undressing or in the privacy of their homes is like, "not a big deal" and yet, it worked. Fans will defend or ignore this piece of Jonathan lore, but like, the show does go out of its way to make it feel like it's okay.
So you're telling me....
The Steve that freaked the fuck out when he saw Nancy's hand bleeding... The Steve that didn't want Nancy going off on her own because he was worried... The Steve that punched through a wall, and beforehand, was about to seriously risk his life, to save Nancy....
Didn't bat an eye at her offering herself up as bait? And the Nancy that defended him in front of everyone... The Nancy the jumped into Lovers Lake as soon as Steve was dragged under... The Nancy that called for Steve to save her.... Acted the exact same when he was hanging off a tower? We were fucked over.

god jonathan really will only go to nancy when he feels like it and not for innocent reasons as to make her happy. he will literally let her deal with her own misery until she comes to him and even then it’s a toss up if he actually will help her
And even with how little he even sees her anyway, when he does, he just can't STAND that she's in pink. He doesn't miss her or feel happy to see her, he just hates she's in pink! Manchild of the year award
i'm gonna love you for a long time

Is Anyone Else Praying For Season 2?
Vincenzo Horse Scene . . . Still Not Over It
Vincenzo's preferred role in life is to be Cha-young's accessory first and comedy support second, it is my favorite thing
Me seeing people celebrating when their ships become canon
Steve finding the answer in the manual for Nancy, Steve completing the reactivation of the tower, Steve suggesting offering emotional support to Nancy when she's at the hospital, Steve being a key player in the success of the Turnbow Trap, Steve driving through the gate into the Upside Down with Nancy's blessing (that's all Steve needs), Steve suggesting that they keep moving until they find a solution and save Holly (I agree with Steve), Steve suggesting they switch up the teams so that people can work together, Steve trying to move heaven and earth to get to Nancy despite the great danger to himself, Steve breaking through the wall and helping Nancy through the opening, Steve asking if she's OK, Steve attentive to Nancy listening for Holly's cry, Steve coming up with the master plan (with Nancy's refinement), Steve ready go upgrade his weapon but deferring to Nancy's expertise--
DO YOU SEE THE VISION
The Duffers said: No

Steve such a grace-filled character played by such a grace-filled actor. He took everything and made it work. But he did in fact deserve better. They didn’t resolve the love confession in season 4. They didn’t give him any real closure.
