Of course I want to take a moment to ponder on this particular, maddening detail!
Let's suffer together!!! Because everything in this show seems tailor-made to torture Mark and Gemma. Starting off with the testing floor closet, because there is something about the inhumane, clinical cruelty Gemma is treated with, about the fact that everything Lumon provides is markedly artificial and devoid of life, about the clothes she’s forced to wear—and then all of a sudden, before her very eyes is the last thing that remains of the real world, of her past life, her REAL LIFE. Her gasp in that moment breaks my heart into a million fucking pieces.
What was once a regular outfit becomes yet another symbol of loss, a dark omen for what is to come
And then we’ve got the Lumon approach, the twisting of the knife with every wellness session, the twisting of the knife with the cameras and the voyeurism, the twisting of the knife with every person that pretends to be sorry for Mark, the twisting of the knife with Cold Harbor. Mark infiltrates the testing floor with the knowledge that a biotechnology corporation has been (somehow) spying and manipulating his life, THEIR LIFE, FOR YEARS, but the degree to which that is true doesn’t truly sink in until he enters Cold Harbor and he sees—GEMMA, JUST AS SHE WAS, AND THE DISSASEMBLED PIECES OF WOOD. THE DEFINITION OF A SURREAL HELL. It seems truly like the image from a mythical underworld—here is the person you have mourned, the person you ruined yourself for, almost untouched by time, and in this moment she doesn’t recognize you. It’s like a rift fucking opens because their lives stopped the moment they were ripped apart and particularly to Mark, finding her in the same clothes makes the clock start ticking again. Like, those two years under Lumon happened in a pocket universe where time doesn't pass, where snow doesn't melt, and it's only through their reunion that everything regains meaning
