literally always thinking about how sydney described natalie as someone who "experiences empathy, but not sympathy" godddd. that's so fucking crazy to me. top character of all time. hey yeah we made a girl who feels everything and everybody, but doesn't feel bad for anything or anybody. and how much more painful that has to make her job. she's surrounded by people in pain, people trapped, people in emotional anguish, and she understands all of those feelings. their presence actively affects her. but it doesn't change her mind. she's in pain, actively, all the time, and she doesn't pity anybody. and no one is coming to save her.
she genuinely hates to see other people upset, in pain, mistreated. so she just looks away. their pain is her pain, but that doesn't mean she has to help them. there are things more important than how bad hurting others makes her feel. things like her own safety. she can't shut out the genuine empathy she feels for lumon's other victims, but she can always look away. it hurts her to see other people hurt, and yet, there's no sympathy there. just empathy with no spark, nowhere to go.

So do we think Cobel not telling the Board about Helly's suicide attempt was at Helena's own request? This is something that I haven't thought a ton about before now, but Helena wanting to keep it a secret would explain why she seemingly never told anyone (i.e. Natalie) about it herself.
I think the thing that most supports this idea is Helena's conversation with Cobel in 2.02 after the OTC. Helena says "I personally owe you a debt of gratitude." I had sort of assumed at first that this was just referring to the events of the evening, but Cobel's response is "It cost me dearly" to which Helena says "And still, you proved your loyalty tonight" which to me implies that what happened "tonight" is something separate from what Helena was saying she owes Cobel for.
Plus "It cost me dearly" is obviously referring to the fact that Cobel just got fired earlier in the day, which was specifically for keeping Helly's suicide attempt a secret, so it feels like this might be a fair assumption.
