Character development, in general, is defined as the growth of a character’s depth and personality, including their appearance, history, mannerisms, etc. Make sure you do this to your character(s) as soon as writerly possible.

Please. 

Most stories start out by developing the appearance of their character before anything else. And while you can certainly do that, it can get in the way of the connection your reader makes with your character. That connection is the thing that will keep them reading, so you want to make sure you start building that first and foremost.

So how do we develop our characters? Glad you asked! There’s tons of ways, including (but of course not limited to):

Accents / catchphrases. You would never confuse “Zoinks, Scoob!” with “Gotta catch ‘em all.” If your character has a quick saying that they say all the time, or a favorite word, your reader will start associating that with your character. (Plus, you can always bring it back around if/when that character dies. Parallels!)

Rich backstory. You don’t have to have your character spill their guts to every person they come across, but if you spend some time hashing out the details of your character, things will go much smoother for you. There are tons of character sheets out there on the Internet that you could fill out. Eventually, the tiny details you decide on will leak into the story at the most unexpected of times. Remember: you are entirely in charge. Your word is canon. Create at will. There is no wrong answer.

Habits. Habits are an intensely human thing. Whether your character twists her hair, bites his nails, or bounces their leg, slipping these characteristics into your narration will give your reader a clear mental image. This will strengthen that connection between your reader and your character, which is of course the whole point. These habits can also manifest as nervous tics. Because your characters will be under stress (thanks to a thing called plot), giving them a nervous tic like stuttering or pacing can develop them further.

OK, yeah, fine, physical appearance is a way to develop your characters, too. Physical appearance is important, don’t get me wrong, but there are other things! Think outside the box! If the only development you give your character is the freckles scattered across their face, then your reader has only a mental image and has no emotional connection to your character.

Trinkets! Talismans and baubles can serve not only as a developmental point, but also as a hook or as a memory (start your story with a detailed description of this trinket with no explanation, have your character give this trinket to a loved one before/during/after death). Some good examples of trinkets that develop the character are Katniss Everdeen’s mockinjay pin and Star Lord’s Walkman.

Personal style. How they wear their hair, how they dress, piercings, tattoos, jewelry, how they move (gracefully, etc), all these things can develop your character. Pick and choose a few to assign to your character, and then for the love of god stay consistent.

Essentially, anything that makes your character unique among other characters will develop them. Make sure you incorporate some of these character details as soon as possible!! Your story relies on your characters; if you don’t have strong characters, you’ll likely run into a wall.

Oh, and these developmental details can totally change! The changes in a character’s development is what makes up their arc. (In fact, it’s actually really unrealistic if they don’t change over time). Happy writing!
