I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad
In case you're curious here's what I mean.
Renaissance(distinct lines, stability and the individual man):
Baroque (bold, chaotic, dramatic):
Romantic(romanticize the simple hard working life):
Do you see the difference?
this post has re-wired my brain in the best way
it's funny because snape has several factors that could make his radicalization interesting and sympathetic: desiring escape from poverty (via the death eaters offering him financial compensation for his service, not the Bullied By Rich Kids angle), his abuse by his father and by lucius malfoy. but unfortunately the text barely even gets into these, because jkr decided that the marauders who risked their lives fighting voldemort rightfully attacking a literal proto-death eater is snape's primary and most damaging trauma instead. (it’s laughable how many snape stans crying classism wrt the marauders’ bullying - and most of the time also assigning blame to remus and lily rather than just the rich purebloods - also have positive things to say about lucius malfoy and his relationship with snape.)
and so of course, to find his entire adult arc sympathetic and acceptable as a redemption, his hatred of james and the marauders in general has to be seen as justified. which it fucking isn't, not only because they didn't bully him and he wasn't their victim, but because they are his victims first and foremost. snape relaying the prophecy got james murdered. it got sirius tortured for 12 years in azkaban. it's the reason remus and sirius both lost all their friends.
and we're meant to see snape gloating about the deaths and misery of the victims of his fascist war crimes, to abuse another victim of his fascist war crimes, the child he personally orphaned, as an actual redemption. not to mention neville, given that the longbottom torture was almost definitely because bellatrix knew neville was the other prophecy child. not to mention hermione, a muggleborn being abused by the former death eater who murdered people like her. and i don't doubt countless others who had their families murdered by death eaters or by snape specifically. "snape's just a mean teacher!!!1!" no actually he spends the entire series actively tormenting and abusing people he personally destroyed the lives of and/or are related to his death eater past while validating slytherin bigots.
it’s also why i find even fixing snape’s redemption in fanon hard to conceptualize, even though i’d theoretically be interested in exploring that. for that to work, but i first need a compelling and sympathetic motivation for his behavior, especially his treatment of harry. the whole “he was bullied so he’s a bully” doesn’t work, because he wasn’t bullied, lol. i have zero interest in any take that blames any part of snape’s radicalization or adult behavior on the marauders. and pretty much all his behavior is linked to that (i.e. his petty pathetic hatred of gryffindor), to the “victimization” that’s explored largely only through the lens of boarding school social dynamics.
My friend messaged me this link, after we had previously been discussing this and how uncomfortable the narrative was because of the reasons listed here. I had to dig out my login JUST to repost this.
Everyone keeps talking about how great it was to see Love Quinn again, and it was, but what about Guinevere Beck? I know that Love was a Feminist Icon who murdered people and Tumblr loves that content, but everyone just ignores that Beck was a normal woman who wrote poetry and was complex and lived her life and then she was stalked and murdered by her boyfriend in a scene that was probably so violent that it wasn’t shown onscreen.
I love them both, but Beck truly has my heart man
YOU: season 5
Spoilies for seasons 1-4 below:
Okay so they’ve said that people from Joe’s past will come back to haunt him and possibly bring him to justice. So, I’ve been thinking about who could be part of this group of people who’d want to take Joe down.
Blythe and Ethan would probably not have anything to do with it. Blythe sent Beck’s book to her agent and got it published. Neither she nor Ethan have anything against Joe because they don’t know that he’s a murderer. Paco and his mom also have no reason to go after Joe; he helped them. No one from season 1 knows that Joe is the one who killed Beck- except for Dr. Nicky. But Dr. Nicky found God in prison and has no urge to take Joe down (he says so in season 2).
As far as loose ends from season 2, Ellie is the obvious one. Her sister is dead because of Joe. Joe ruined her life and she’s definitely never forgiven him.
Season 3 has more loose ends than others. There’s Sherry and Cary, and Matthew and Theo Engler. Sherry and Cary were literally trapped in the cage by Love and Joe and Cary almost died. Love killed Matthew’s wife, Natalie, and severely injured Theo. Matthew was on to Love and Joe, too. He was very suspicious of them. You could even consider Dante a loose end because he’s the one who ended up taking care of Joe’s son, Theo.
As far as season 4 goes, Marienne and Nadia are the big loose ends. Joe abducted Marienne and trapped her in the cage for a long time and only got away due to the combined cleverness of herself and Nadia. Nadia is framed for Eddie’s murder at the end of the season, and she goes to prison. But she knows what Joe did to Marienne and the others; she knows who he is.
I’d love to see as many of these people as possible come together to take Joe down. I know Jenna Ortega (Ellie) is booked and busy as hell, but I really hope she comes back. An Avengers-esque team up of all the people Joe has wronged would make me so incredibly happy.
I honestly think Paco will come back, but grown up and not with the intention of taking Joe down. I think it will just happen, possibly with Ellie's insights. He's either going to continue on the cycle and if Joe sees that, he'll kill him. OR, he'll break the cycle and take Joe down for good. Nadia isn't staying silent in prison for long, I feel it in my bones.

beloved friends. treasured acquaintances. revered mutuals. we are gathered here today to pay attention to meeee
bro shut up i’m trying to recall the details of my prophetic dream
i love when characters don't get to die
this is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done. especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. like yes motherfucker there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. you get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. you get to try to make amends and do good. you get to live.
this is also about every self-sacrificial bastard of a protagonist who puts themselves in harm's way again and again and again to a wildly unhealthy and unnecessary degree. see, there's something so compelling to me in the unspoken suicidality of repeated heroic self-sacrifice, and the thing about implicitly suicidal characters is that i want them to live. and that can be used to make a death so much more tragic and impactful - noble sacrifices and last stands certainly can and have been done beautifully - but there's also something special to me in seeing such a character make it. because you'd die for the people you love, yes, but would you live for them?
