"No. No more chemo. She keeps trying to get me to go, but I'm too goddamn tired and too goddamn old." Berthold sighs again--it's the only way to get enough oxygen in his rotting lungs. "She's gonna take it hard when I go. Ma's gone. Ain't got you. Just that shithead keeps selling her dope. Why she picks him over you--hey, here's the stop." He doesn't even bother digging for a wallet. "Get me Pall Malls. Red. Carton of 'em."
âCâmon Bert, stop talking like that.â Roy says, trying to not himself       start thinking about when worse comes to worst.Â
He takes the long way to the liquor store, eventually turning on the       radio when Bertholdt goes almost silent. When they do stop, he       fishes through his pockets, digging for spare change. âHow much       is a carton anyway? You might actually save some money if you quit.â Â
"Doctors," Berthold spits. "Fucking *vultures*." He sits forward in the passenger seat, gripping the dashboard. "You know what those goddamn doctors do? Fleece you until you're dead. Not a goddamn thing they can do I can't do myself." He shakes his head and bites his lip, remembering. "Not a goddamn thing they can do. I'm done for, kid. Couple months more of roasting--my goose is cooked."
âMight help if you sat back.â Roy waits until Bertholdt is buckled in,       easing on the gas and brakes so he doesnât swing forward.Â
âRiza told me about the treatments. Whoâs been taking you?â For a     moment he wishes he had, then maybe then he could have gotten      more of the man than closed ears and fuzzy memory. âIâm sure the      chemoâs hard on you, but youâve got a couple of years left on you      at least.âÂ
My girlfriend has been trying to suggest some different animes for me and her response to the last one was âTravis Willingham voices the main characterâ and now I just may consider....Â

"I got plenty of fresh air--pumped in every day." It takes a lot of effort to stand, but he manages it, shuffling unsteadily to the door. No shoes, no coat. He doesn't even grab the keys hanging from the hook by the lightswitch. "Come on, I ain't got all day!"
âRight.â On their way out, Roy grabs the  folded up the walker, carrying    it out to the car. He watches for the usual change in expression,    disappointment, anger, all of which he brushes off quickly. âI donât want to     hear it, Bert.â He says, opening up the  trunk. Helping him into the car is    another hassle, the old man never did like his help. âWhenâs the last time    you saw the doctor anyway?âÂ
"Riza? Isn't she at school?" Berthold sighs, rubbing at the pain in his temple. "She took all my smokes. She's always taking stuff. Selling it. That's how she pays for that nasty habit of hers, you know. Nasty habit. Good thing you got rid of her when you did. No sense tying down to..." He shakes his head, but it clears nothing. "I need my smokes. You got your car here? Let's go down to the bodega. Before Riza gets here. She'll make you dinner. But I need my smokes."
âI ought to get you a patch.â Over the years heâd learn to disregard       anything heâd say about his daughter, nothing good ever came from       it when he actually listened anyway. âThose smokes you like are       gonna kill you.âÂ
Roy gets up again, reaching out to adjust the tubes of Bertâs       cannula. âBut, some fresh might do you some good.âÂ
"They want my things. I see them looking in here, you know! Everybody wants *my* stuff." Berthold gestures wildly around the room. "I got some valuable stuff hidden in here. Riza keeps moving it. You should take a look, pick out what you want--before I'm dead and the vultures get to me. They're trying to radiate me from that van. Goddamn nurses followed me home. "He blinks, and looks at Roy as though seeing him for the first time. "What're you doing here?"
âItâs me, Bert. Roy. Weâve been talking for about fifteen minutes.â       Itâs only when he realizes how far gone Bertholdtâs gotten that he       starts to remember the guilt. âTheyâre just vans. They wonât take       anything from you unless you let them.âÂ
He pulls the blinds closed, making his way back to the chair,       âWhenâs the last time you saw Riza? Do you remember?âÂ
"That waste of space--what would she tell me? I wanna know where the hell you been! What, I gotta start dying to get a little attention?" Berthold huffs and blows the steam from his coffee. Movement outside catches his eye. "You see that van? Here yesterday. Damn vultures."
âNow, you should know not visiting is no oneâs fault but mine.      Iâve been busy, a lotâs happened since I used to come here.âÂ
Roy gets up from the chair, peeking through the half opened      blinds, âWhat do they want from you?âÂ
"So my deadbeat daughter managed to track you down, then." Berthold squints into the coffee cup and takes a sip. "It'll do, I guess. Water in this building's absolute shit." He's halfway through with this cigarette and already reaching for another. "So. What do you have to say for yourself?"
âWhat am I supposed to say?â Roy sighs, moving to sit in one      of the hardly used armchairs. âWhatâd she tell you?âÂ
He picks up the lighter from the coffee table, flicking it on once      before passing it over. â---if anything.âÂ

Berthold can hear the lock twisting, but it's too far to get up. "Riza! I told you don't come back! I'm old, not invalid!" He coughs roughly. "Riza! Bring me the coffee if you're going to be here! And the newspaper!"
The house still smells mostly of cigarettes, the stale air almost       unchanging after all of the time heâd spent here when he was       younger. At Bertholdt barks orders, Roy picks up the accumulating       stack of the last half-weekâs newspapers, then moving on to mess       with the coffee pot.Â
He tries to remember; black, two sugars, take the spoon out       afterward. When he comes in the living room, the old man is in       his usual spot, smoke wafting as he continues to take a drag       despite the oxygen tank at his feet.  âYouâll say I made it too       strong for you.â Roy says, setting the cup down on on of the       side tables. âNever did get it right.âÂ
Madame just stares at him for a long moment. "That's not the way I raised you." But then she sighs and pours him another drink. "You got a good reason for it? Or a bad one?"
âNone that make you proud of me.âÂ
âYou donât⌠you donât know what heâs like.â
The phone isnât even hers. Solf knows the passcodeâhe checks her messages from time to time. He must be busy now, or he wouldâve sent a message. Wondering why she hasnât checked in.
âItâs notâheâll get bored of me eventually. And then it will be over. But you donât just leave Kimblee. Not until heâs done with you.â
    âThen go.âÂ
Itâs like an off-switch,  he thinks, you pick and choose which      fight is yours and which to call it quits. Right now at least, he      doesnât think itâs worth it.Â
âGo do whatever it is you do now.âÂ
"Well, it had to be bad if she hurt you back." Madame pours him just a finger and slides it over. "You gonna confess to me, or should I send you back to the nuns?"
âNo reason for the nuns, theyâd just send me back.â The scotch    slides down smooth, he only wishes the haze would come faster.    âCheated on her.âÂ
When he says it he starts to feel nauseous. âOne of the     students on campus---met her at the bar one night, I donât     remember anything after that.â
I could nap for fifteen years.Â
