I GET DOWN

With a soulful style, all their own Tortuga's been hitting the local scene in a big way after their performance at The Bluebird Theater in February. Consisting of Ryan Mahrer and Tyler Arndt the duo, local to Colorado, has a new release in the works entitled ‘Silhouette’ with Philos Records out of Kansas City that you don’t want to miss. From ending ski season in Summit County with a performance at Lake Dillon Tavern to talking Backwoods Music Festival you’ll only catch up with Tortuga in this interview.

Aryonna Richard: Your new EP Silhouette is dropping April 12th what can you tell me about teaming up with the nationally acclaimed Philos Records in Kansas City?

Tortuga: We’re certainly excited for this release. Philos Records has been amazing to work with. Jordan and the crew over there really know what they’re doing. Excited to be added to their roster along some of the national acts they’ve worked with previously. Jordan’s been there throughout the creative process for Silhouette - both the music and the art. He’s given great insight and has been an all-around awesome guy. Tyler put together the visuals in case anyone is wondering.

AR: How do you believe this EP will be different from others you’ve released?

Tortuga: Silhouette is definitely a more hip hop based release in comparison to previous works. This is also why we partnered up with Philos Records for the release. But we wouldn’t say it’s all that “different” from how we’ve created previous tracks. We’re just always looking to bring new sounds, elements, and melodies into our production - mostly because we like to see what happens. These turned out pretty funky, so we thought Philos may be interested. Thankfully they were, and Silhouette came to fruition. But we have a number of formulas for the way we create the music we release though. A lot of the sounds in these tracks are coming from a place of inspiration. We find a melody we like within ourselves or within something someone else has created and build off it. That melody can come from anywhere.

AR: How does it feel to have such a large goal come to fruition so quickly?

Tortuga: “At this point we can’t say we’ve done enough to feel satisfied. A lot of amazing artists come out of Denver - many paved the way for what we’re attempting to put together right now - so we try to stay very conscious minded of our “accomplishments” in that sense. We’re going to keep our heads down and keep doing what we’re doing, though. We hope you all like it!”

AR: It looks like you have an upcoming performance in Summit County. What can you tell me about joining the Nocturne Entertainment Crew?

Tortuga: “They have been awesome to work with. Derek, the owner, reached out to us recently, and we were really excited he did so. We’re also really excited to see what we can do with them in the near future in the local area. As for the show this Saturday, it’s our first in Summit County and first at the Lake Dillon Tavern. Nocturne Entertainment could not have picked a better weekend. Ski season is winding down, and everyone should be ready to get out and have some fun. Should be one for the books so please join us!”

AR: Anything special lined up for this performance?

Tortuga: “We never like to spoil the surprise.”

AR: How does it feel to be hitting the local music scene in such a big way?

Tortuga: “It feels amazing, but we honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without the support from you and the I Get Down family. Working with you guys has been amazing. Thank you again for everything you’ve done for us. We also have to take the time to thank all of our friends from around the state and country. Really, that’s been the driving factor behind all of this for us. The support is felt on so many levels for both of us.”

AR: Who else on the (local Denver scene) lineup would you recommend your fans check out?

Tortuga: “We’ve played a fair number of shows in the last - almost - year and everyone we’ve worked with has been awesome. To name a few - Decadon; Tkettle; At.Play; DJ TOFU; Digital Beat Down; TwoScoopS out of Fort Collins. Valdeezy is an up and coming duo to watch out for out of the Denver area. All of these artists are worth looking into. All are out of Colorado also. Support your local artists people.”

AR: I noticed Tortuga on the lineup for the Backwoods Music Festival in September how does it feel to be preparing to play for your largest audience to date?

Tortuga: “We’re excited for this show. Probably the most excited we’ve been for anything up to date. We’ve turned a lot of our focus to social media and knowing that a festival of that size feels comfortable endorsing us is fulfilling in that way. We’re hoping to confirm a few more dates for this summer so stay tuned!”

AR: How do you feel the national exposure will help the movement around your music?

Tortuga: “It’s hard to say exactly. But we’ve always felt festivals are a great way to gain exposure to new people. Ideally, you play in front of a new fan and if they enjoy your performance they bring the experience of your music back to their hometown through the music you have available online. An awesome example of this form of marketing is when Zoogma came up with their “What the Fuck is Zoogma” idea. It seemed to do so much for them as far as captivating people's interest and driving them towards their music both at the festival and afterward online.”

AR: Anything, in particular, you are working on for your set at Backwoods?

Tortuga: “We’re always trying to come up with new ideas for our live performances. As of now we don’t have anything we can share. But, we’re looking forward to it and can’t wait to bring the Colorado name to Oklahoma, alongside some amazing national acts. We’re aiming to make a big impact for our first show outside of the state, though.” 

AR: Any hints you can give me about what else is in the works for Tortuga this summer?

Tortuga: “No hints haha. But big things are in the works. Please stay tuned!”

You’ll learn about the sound he’s creating, what to expected from his headlining performance, and his ultimate vision for SoDown in this exclusive interview.

Aryonna Richard: So you believe in “seizing every opportunity, trying new things and ultimately living the most epic life possible”  Can you tell me about an earlier experience that pushed you to try new ground and pursue music?

Ehren Wright: “My good friend Eric invited me to go to my first electronic show (which was Pretty Lights in 2010). We got a group of friends together and went all in. My life hasn't been the same since.” 

AR: What instruments do you play/when did you start?

EH: “I play saxophone and guitar; I started saxophone about two years ago, and I started guitar maybe 3-4 years ago.” 

AR: When did you become interested in producing music?

EH: “In the year following Pretty Lights at Red Rocks in 2010, I was going to tons of shows and I felt I needed to make the jump into it as a career.” 

AR: When did you begin creating music as SoDown? Can you tell me about a particular experience, from this period, that pushed you to pursue the dream further?

EH: “I started SoDown in 2013; I had my first show that year as well. That was a big inspiration. I love sharing myself and my music with people; I think live is where my music shines most.” 

AR: What inspires you to produce music?

EH: “Interacting with the people around me. Creating something that moves the soul as well as the body.” 

AR: How would you describe the sound you're creating now?

EH: “Funky, soulful bass music with live saxophone.”

AR: I noticed a new remix of Unlimited Gravity’s Neck Check on your Sound Cloud, is there anything you can tell us about the track? 

EH: “I actually wrote that track over a year ago. It took me a super long time to release it, but it stood the test of time in my mind, which is saying something since I'm such a perfectionist with my music.” 

AR: As a growing force in the Colorado music scene, do you feel like there’s anything specific about this area that attracts so much creativity?

EH: “The people and the landscape. Everyone is so open around here, I think the plains and the mountains keep us all humble.” 

AR: How does it feel to be a part of the initial Sonic Bloom lineup along with fellow  Colorado favorites SunSquabi? 

EH: “It feels awesome! Those guys are all my good friends.  It’s going to be a great time as always.” 

AR: Are you preparing anything special for your set at Sonic Bloom?

EH: “Of course! I work really hard to make sure every set is different and unique for the setting. Sonic Bloom will be a big one.”

When purpose meets passion, the combination ignites the path for a vision to take way, and that’s exactly the fuel leading Lucid Vision in his ultimate pursuit to use music as a catalyst for change and awakening. I felt it exuding from him from the second we sat down, just a few days away from his co-headlining show at The Bluebird Theatre. 

With a defined dream, raw determination, and the mindset, “I will continue until my last ounce of energy” it’s no wonder Dalton Kieta aka Lucid Vision is a staple in the Colorado music scene who’s gaining national attention through upcoming projects like The Untz Festival taking place in Mariposa, California. You'll only learn about the man behind the vision and how he will stop at nothing to make it lucid in this exclusive interview.

Aryonna Richard: So you believe in ‘Spreading light through sound.’ Can you tell me about some of the early musical influences that inspired you? 

Dalton Kieta: “I’ve felt the power of music, and I’ve seen it bring thousands of people from their homes to obscure places. I’ve seen music bring people to tears. I’ve felt the inspiration and meaning that music brings to life. It’s an art form that is never complete, but continuously evolving.”

AR: What instruments do you play? When did you begin?

DK: “I play the guitar, piano, and computer (which I do consider an instrument). Much of what I do involves layering, resampling, and massaging with various effects. When I started, I had no musical background, was never in a band in school, never studied music theory or audio engineering, and then I dove right into composing electronic music. I began about five years ago from square one, but I feel like I’ve had the ability to articulate myself through music since about two years ago.”

AR: What can your fans expect from your upcoming show at The Bluebird Theater?

DK: “One aspect of the event that I am extremely excited about is that we are bringing out a top line professional visual experience that incorporates a twenty foot wide, custom built lighting rig. I’ve been working with Cole Kegans of JC Lighting and SSS Productions, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve put together.”

AR: In January of 2011 you followed your passion and started producing music as Lucid Vision can you tell me about a particular experience, from this period, that pushed you to turn the dream into a reality?

DK: "I had a friend that started creating music, and after he got over that initial learning curve and the music began to get good, I realized that I couldn’t just stand by and watch someone else live my dream. What do I have to lose except my life? I thought. There’s a famous quote by Slug of Atmosphere, “ The only guarantee in life is a life worth dying for” I realized WHY NOT go for this.

As a senior in high school, I asked myself how I could obtain the $3,000 needed to get the equipment I needed to make music. I decided to sell my car (an Infiniti i30t). All my friends thought I was crazy. Exchanging my freedom and social life to produce music. I guess I was crazy because the music sucked for a while, but I kept going.

I took AP Music Theory at Cherry Creek High School, and I couldn’t get it, and I ended up failing the course the first time I took it. I knew if I could get a four or higher on the AP test that I could pass the course as a whole. So I said to myself ‘If you can’t pass Music Theory 1 how are you ever going to be good enough, if not better, than Pretty Lights? I had to keep going. I worked hard, figured it out and received a four on my AP test. This experience was one of my defining moments that and the decision to sell my car. The first walls are always the toughest."

AR: How did you come up with the name Lucid Vision? 

DK: “Through seeing musicians I admire like Pretty Lights and Emancipator Ensemble I started to get a vision of my fullest potential or my higher self. Music compelled me to chase this idea and make it lucid. One of my intentions is to inspire people to build their dreams. No one can motivate other people to do that without, first, living their dream. I wanted a name that encompassed my motives."

AR: How would you describe the sound you're creating now?

DK: “Honestly I would describe it with two words, ‘Colorado Style’. My influences come from early Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, and Emancipator. I’d like to think that my music tests the boundaries of soundscape and reaches extremes at times, but does it in a tasteful way.” 

AR: What can you tell me about the experience of prepping for your co-headlining show at the Bluebird with Skydyed?

DK: So one thing a lot of people don’t know about me is that I am very active on the music business side of things as well, and I am the event manager for this show. I had some help from a colleague Cody Brubaker, but for the most part, I hired all the acts, rented out the stage production and lighting, organized the deal with AEG Live, employed the graphic designer to create the flyer, and contacted the sponsors.

Every day I am in communication with around 15 to 20 people and sometimes I need to step away from my phone, emails and social media just focus on what brought me to this in the first place. The music." 

AR: Tell me about the ultimate vision you would like to create with your Lucid Vision persona?

DK: “Ultimately, I am in the music scene to share the feeling of inspiration and determination that's ignited within me through music. My vision is to use the music as a tool to help catalyze the awakening and empowerment of society. My intention is to inspire people to create their dreams as well, and the only way I can do that is by living my own first.”

AR: As a growing force in the Colorado music scene, do you feel like there’s anything specific about this area that attracts so much creativity?

DK: “A large amount of smaller local venues catalyzes the scene and gives musicians who are just starting out a chance to test their skills.”

AR: Our company Motto is “Live Life. Have Fun. Get Down.” Is there a particular saying that guides your life?

DK: “We got this.” 

At the end of the day, remember to maintain a mindset of growth and always welcoming new opportunities. Lucid Vision’s ability to innovate is the distinguishing trait that truly separates him from other musicians. In regards to the place he’s at right now in his career Dalton ultimately feels,  “I am a novice, and I know that I still have a lot of learning to do. I will always look up to other musicians and be open to other ways of doing things.”

Get Social with Lucid Vision! 

As the sun set in Denver, Colorado I met up with Ryan Mahrer and Tyler Arndt the two members of Tortuga an emerging electronic duo, pushing the boundaries of sound production. Fusing the musician’s perspective with that of the sound engineer, these artists combined their talents to create one unique sound.

With roots that run deep, Ryan would say his love of music, began as a family affair. His father being a huge supporter of the Creed Clearwater Revival and The Beatles which influenced his taste from an early age. A case of sibling rivalry also fueled his motivation to learn and study music. As a child, his older sister flourished as a pianist but it didn’t take long for Ryan to catch up. He now plays the piano, guitar, and bass guitar.

Unlike Ryan, Tyler’s early musical influences came from forces beyond his control. In 5th grade, he was forced to learn to play the clarinet, which he enjoyed until skateboarding consumed all of his time during middle school. He took a guitar class in the 8th grade and learned a few chords but didn’t discover his true passion until learning more of the technical side of sound production.

Having met in Elementary school, 5th grade to be exact, Ryan and Tyler have been encouraging one another with their, individual ventures into music for years. In 2010, Tyler purchased a program and started learning the technical elements of sound production. He started making what he called “noises” until the small hobby became a passion. At that point he realized, he wanted to focus on the actual semantics and music theory that comes with producing a song.  At the same time, Ryan continued playing instruments honing his skills and discovering that his love for music wasn’t simply another hobby. Through the two’s mutual interest in producing music, they eventually came together to form one sound through two ideals.

With Ryan bringing the musicians perspective and Tyler the experience of a sound engineer, Tortuga was established in August of 2014. Despite a difference in location, Ryan in Denver and Tyler in Atlanta, their debut EP “Back Home” was released in February 2015, just six months after forming their initial concept. The track's  production took place on two separate computers; with the two members using Dropbox to work individually on the joint-venture. Production is the key area of emphasis behind their sound with Ryan and Tyler both understanding how to produce music and create tracks themselves. Tyler primarily brings the lower tones of drum and bass while Ryan comes in with their sweet melodies.

Already more than performers Tortuga is working to build a grassroots movement around their music and look at Derek Vincent Smith of Pretty Lights for inspiration. Their goal is to create a record label with musicians under Tortuga. To quote Ryan, “We don’t want just to be artists. We want kids to represent themselves through our apparel, if their producers through our label, we want to create an entire brand behind it.”

It may just happen faster than the pair thinks, on Feb 14, 2016, you can catch them opening for Donnie Miller of Decadon and PawS an artist local to the Denver area at the Bluebird Theatre. "Most people that I talk to about I GET DOWN always ask how it started, where it came from, and more importantly what it means. Well, here it is...

When I graduated college from Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ) I moved back to Iowa to work for my father and utilize my Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management.  Seemed like the safe move.  Seemed like the smart move.  So I spent weekends with my folks and worked in Chariton, Iowa for a construction company at a grocery store distribution center.  Real exciting.  The town was roughly 4,000 people.  The people were very friendly and respectful, very hardworking and passionate about their little town.  But for a 22 year old that recently graduated, it was not what I was looking for.

At this time I was making very amateur electronic mixes with the very computer I type at today.  I learned from my great friend, Gabor, the simple workings of a free software and somehow made it work, along with his help.  So that summer of 2011, I actually played 2 shows at Mojo’s Bar in Columbia, Missouri, where my brother CJ had an “in” with the event manager.  It wasn’t a big deal, maybe 115 people at both shows, but it was just fun for me!  The first show that I played in Columbia, CJ actually made me a shirt at a local shop that said “I GET DOWN” in big black letters on a Hanes basic t-shirt.  That folks, is where it all started. 

I still remember the conversation between CJ and I prior to the infamous first t-shirt.  He basically told me that the entire year before that my response to every question was not “yes”, definitely not “no”, but always “I’ll get down”.  Over time we had always talked about having something develop from the classic phrase, but after some time it became clear a potential path for our future.  With that shirt on, it was one of the best nights of my life.  For once I was the one on stage making folks dance and controlling the mix.  It was invigorating.  I can’t thank CJ enough for the opportunity.  That night I GET DOWN was truly born.

As I worked the construction job all summer I became unfulfilled.  I envied a life of ultimate freedom and in all honesty, missed some of the “college life” freedoms I had months prior.  One day I walked into my boss’s office and said “Dad, I gotta quit, man.”  I was extremely grateful for the job and opportunity he gave me, but it was time to move on.  I had planned on teaching English in Barcelona for only a couple of weeks before this.  I applied, got into the program, got lined up for a flat and that was that.  The look on my father’s face was pretty rough, but at that point as a young, dumb kid, what the hell?  You might as well take a shot right?

The following months were some of the best of my entire life.  I met great people, traveled to amazing places, and had some of the greatest experiences I could’ve ever asked for.  I got certified to teach English in Barcelona after a month, which was nice.  After that I found a relatively easy job as a substitute teacher for an Irish lad that broke his ankle and needed surgery.  If you ever have any desire to live abroad, look into teaching English, it’s the key to many doors!  All in all I went to 9 countries in 9 months.  I lived in Barcelona for a little over 4 months, and Phuket, Thailand for over 3.  Over the course of that time I experienced Spain, Amsterdam, Portugal, Morocco, Italy, China, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.  It was truly wonderful.

Every single country I visited got to experience me as well.  I sported the same New Balance 420 shoes, North Face backpack, and I GET DOWN white t-shirt.  It seemed like no matter where I was, no matter the language, I always had people coming up to me and saying “I GET DOWN, too!”  It became something more to me at that point.  Something greater.  Something bigger than me.  It became a movement.  That folks, is where it came from...

After I traveled for almost a year I found myself in Denver, Colorado for a wedding in May of 2012.  I had learned of a Project Engineer position at my old company that had a branch in Denver and was able to score an interview the day before the wedding.  That next Monday I had landed the job and was moving to Denver one week later.  Wow.  

For three years I worked at a high-rise building in downtown Denver doing engineering work for a major building renovation.  When it was challenging, I liked it.  When it got repetitive, I bailed.  I don’t want to dog the corporate world too much because I know a lot of our society works for corporations, but it just wasn’t right for me.  I wasn’t enjoying my days at work.  I wasn’t thriving under the millions of tons of steel and concrete above me.  I was trapped.

In January of 2014 I made the decision that ultimately started I GET DOWN Clothing & Apparel.  I sat down, cranked out a business plan, talked to a bunch of designers, assembled a team and started brainstorming ideas.  Over a few weeks we were cookin’.  Obviously a lot more went into it, but we’ll leave that for another time.

I GET DOWN has transformed from being a simple phrase to a clothing company, but more importantly it’s transformed into a movement. It is now a movement of like-minded individuals that strive to radiate positivity, inspire creativity, and motivate people to make the world a better place.  The movement is about living your life to the fullest and carrying out your passions.  I GET DOWN is a way to bring energy to every day life and make even the most minor of experiences fun and positive.  Whether it’s skiing, longboarding, and music or reading, knitting, and baking; everyone gets down in different ways, and we should be proud of that!  Each and every one of us is different.  Different likes, dislikes, passions, pursuits, dreams, goals. Those differences are what can make us better as individuals. Learning about different people, ideas, experiences, ambitions, truths, cultures, lies and stories may be the easiest way to explore what one’s individual happiness in life is. The path to get there is the best part.

So I encourage you.  Yes, you!  Start thinking about ways to not only help yourself and your personal journey, but also your friends, family, and their personal journey’s.  You get out what you put in from this world.  The more you are negative, the more negativity you will bring on yourself.  When you radiate positivity, smile, be thankful and helpful, you will see how your life gets better in a hurry.  Put yourself out there to the world.  Do things you’ve never done before or that scare you.  Better yourself not only for yourself, but for the people around you.  Read a book!  Give someone a compliment!  Pick up 1 goddamn piece of trash!  It’s not hard people.  The world needs positive, energetic, fun people to even out all the chaos.  I know you can do it.
