James looks down at his cards. Two of Clubs. The exact card he needs to win. He lifts his head to see Regulus sitting across him, eyes narrowed, glaring at Sirius.
Sirius, his face sporting a smirk as he returns Regulus's gaze, says, "So, Prongs. What's your card?"
Next to him, Peter murmurs, "Don't be a two, please don't be a two." The poor guy's been losing since they started. There's genuinely no way he could win, regardless of how much Peter believesâhopesâotherwise.
James looks down at his card. He could reveal his card now and end the game, taking the victory.
But...Regulus and Sirius had started this game demanding it be a competition. If Sirius won again, James'd never hear the end of it. However if he won, Regulus would hold a grudge for at least a week.
Past silent treatments from Regulus still haunt him.
If Regulus won...Sirius would be mad. Ergh. There's no solution.
"Jamie, what's the card?"
James's head snaps back up at his boyfriend. Jamie. His heart fucking melts every time Regulus calls him that.
James gives in immediately.
âJack of Hearts." His voice remains unwavering as he says the exact card that makes Regulus win.
"YES!" Regulus celebrates, throwing his cards on the floor. "TAKE THAT, SIRIUS!"
Peter groans, putting his head in his hands. Remus hides an amused grin behind the book heâs reading on the couch.
Siriusâs jaw drops. âJames, what the fuck?!â
âWhat?! What dâyou want me to do?!â
WellâŚhe did do that, but not in that way. Quite the opposite, really.
âAs if heâd lie to me,â Regulus says, his face showing the widest smile James has ever seen on him. All sweet and unguarded. His eyes sparkling with pure joy.
âNo. I donât believe it. James, show me your card.â
Jamesâs eyes widen. âWhat, donât you trust me?â His voice does waver this time.
Siriusâs lips press into a thin line. âJames Fleamont Potter.â
âJames?â Regulusâs joyful face turns into a confused one.
Someone snatches out Jamesâs card from behind him. âAha!â
âRemus!â James yells, scrambling to his feet to snatch his card back.
Remus manages to evade James, his face lighting up with delight.
âWhat was it, Moony?â Peter asks as James grabs his card back.
âMoony,â James warns.
âWhyâre you being so defensive, James? You wouldnât lie to me,â Sirius says. âRight?â
Remus just hums and sits back down.
âREMUS! What was the damn card?!â Sirius yells at his boyfriend.
âWHAT DO YOU MEAN EH?!â
âOKAY, FINE!â James admits, flopping back down on the floor ungracefully.
âJames?â Regulus furrows his eyebrows.
âI lied! I donât actually have the Jack of Hearts.â He tosses his card down face-up.
Siriusâs eyes land on the card. He clenches his jaw and then storms out the room without a word.
James groans. âShit.â
âYou couldâve won,â Regulus murmurs.
âAngry? No, baby, of course not. Why would I be angry?â
Regulus snorts. âYou made me win.â
âYou called me Jamie. Of course I did.â
âWaitââ James turns around fully to face him. âWait, Regulus. Did you do that on purpose?â
Regulusâs smile gets wider as he stays quiet.
Jamesâs jaw drops. âYouâre a menace.â
âAnd you love me anyway.â
Remus looks up from his book. âJames, you better console Sirius. Iâm not dealing with that today.â
James sighs again. âYeah.â
