where: a coffee shop when: march 4th, 2024 who: any adult

“I’m sorry, they called out my name, but I think this might be yours.” they pushed the coffee cup across the counter to the person who’d been in line before them. although they didn’t remember the person’s particular order, the coffee they’d found beneath the lid was certainly not a black coffee double shot with a dash of soy milk as they’d asked, despite the fact that their name was on the cup. they did remember, however, who’d stood before them in line. “I haven’t drank from it yet, if that helps.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” Camilla reached for the cup and studied it curiously before deciding that yes, it did appear to be her tea. “I wonder how that happened. Thank you though. Hopefully yours won’t be too long in coming.”

“I’ve just realized that I’m allergic to beer. Can you believe that? Beer. What kind of nerd is allergic to beer? Well, me, I guess, but… Shit. It’s so cheap. And good. This is my worst nightmare; please take me away from this forsaken world. I need to find joy again.”

Camilla wasn’t entirely sure how she had ended up being the receiver of all this information but she tried to at least look polite about it. “That sounds very unfortunate, although personally I prefer wine to beer. Can you just start drinking something else to bring joy into your life?”

“Department of Mysteries.” One of the historic benefits of working as an Unspeakable was the apolitical nature of the work done in their Department; no matter whose hands the Ministry was in at the time, there was still research to be done, spells and potions to be refined, magical theory to expand upon. It would have been highly irritating to have her own work interrupted by political whims. "You’d think people would have gotten used to the new security measures by now.”

Camilla nodded, pushing the appropriate button and then clasping her hands together in front of her. Her lips quirked and she sighed at the comment; it was a very nice thought but she didn’t think a day had gone by without some sort of disruption so it didn’t seem very likely. “You would think,” she agreed. “I don’t know that everyone is paying close enough attention, or maybe they’re just hoping things will go back to the old ways.” The old ways which were far inferior to the current way things ran. “But since this is for our own safety, I hope everyone adjusts quickly. Disruptions just make the work day go much more slowly. Well, my day anyway.”

When: Feburary 29th, 2024 Where: The Ministry of Magic Atrium Who: Corinna & anyone who can go to the Ministry

Corinna Vance had been summoned to the Committee for the Disposal of Magical Creatures earlier in the day to discuss a potential thestral on the loose in downtown muggle London. While Corinna certainly didn’t mind that they’d summoned her, she had minded the attitude that had come through quite effectively by the members of the Committee. As if it was her fault that some bloody idiot had managed to let an invisible creature to most, loose. They’d asked her questions like, ‘Can we control it once it’s found?’– Well, of course. ‘Could Muggles see the creature?’ – Theoretically, they could, if they had seen death, much like any witch or wizard. The questions bored her and ultimately the conclusion the room had come to was the same one that she had recommended a week ago… Send her along with the enforcers that they chose to send. 

Now, she sat on the edge of the fountain, flipping through today’s Daily Prophet with an enlarged title article entitled ‘LEAP YEAR– NOT LEAP FROG’. She rolled her eyes as this was simply not news but rather just a date. Another day in the grand scheme of things. And yet, apparently this was the most notable news. Annoyed, Corinna huffed to herself, closing the paper and reaching her copy over to the person next to her. “Have this, it’s utter garbage but I cannot stand to look at it anymore,” she insisted, adding an eye roll at the paper. “Extra! Extra! Read all about it. There’s another fuckin’ day in the year. Let’s focus on that rather than– quite literally anything else,” she grimaced. Her mind longed for new information and this certainly wasn’t hitting her nerd-nerve for the day. “Apologies,” she sighed, calming herself. 

Camilla was on her way through the Atrium between meetings but paused when she spotted Corinna and changed paths. She had a few minutes before the next one and socializing was almost always a good thing. She took the paper instinctively, although she had her own copy of course, and wasn’t at all interested in reading it at the moment. Instead, she folded it and set it aside, laughing at the words. “I suppose there’s only so much they can really write about. Although the quality has seemed quite lacking, especially lately. Surely it would be better to get your mind off it though, rather than dwell on it.”

Susan had yet another busy day ahead of her. Things at work weren’t that bad, but mix it with Order business and worrying about her family, and Susan had a lot on her plate. 

After a brief, but somewhat satisfying, lunch with a representative from Singapore, the brunette was making her way back to the Ministry, and it was then that she witnessed a certain scene. Seeing the way Camilla responded to people voicing their very valid concerns made Susan’s blood boil. She didn’t know the other woman enough to know what her stance on the situation was, but Susan very much doubted that their values aligned all that much when it came to the matter. Still, she always had to be on the lookout — always careful — and so she approached Camilla with a smile.

“Busy day?”

Camilla flashed an expression that she hoped would be polite. What an inane question - of course it was a busy day. It was always a busy day at the Ministry. Losing her temper wouldn’t do any good, however, and considering she had a very long time left in her day, it would set a bad precedent. “Yes,” she finally said, sighing. “It’s been very busy ever since the announcement of the registry - busier than normal, even. I’m sure your department is just as swamped at the moment. I was just stepping out to get some coffee - a necessary evil to make it through the rest of the morning.”

“   i know.    it seems to be all anyone is concerned with.   ”     and something that ophelia has to hear far too many questions about,  given that her job at the ministry has nothing to do with the department that had issued the damn proclamation.    “   that sounds like it’ll do.    how about we walk together down there?    surely two of us can fend off any more of the people,   ”    she says,   lips quirking up at the corner.

Camilla nodded sympathetically; it had been on the tip of everyone’s tongue and had far too many people running in and out of the Ministry, not smart enough to figure out who would actually have the answers. “That would be lovely. Company and an ally in the scuffle.” She began walking again, her polite expression cooling, an attempt to ward off anyone who might try to ask questions. “How are you today?”

“   believe me,  i have no intention of asking you about that bloody registry.   ”    head shakes,  faint annoyance etching itself into ophelia’s expression and her voice,  though it isn’t camila she’s frustrated with    –   rather the general populace and their panic over the registry.   them and the ministry themselves for issuing it.   really,  who cares about half - breeds?    “   i’m only looking for something to drink,  that’s all.    ”

Camilla’s expression relaxed into one more polite as she recognized Ophelia. “That’s an immense relief. I swear it’s all I’ve heard about today and the past several days. But I was going to get some coffee - there’s usually a fairly decent cup in the kitchenette on the next level. Unless you wanted something stronger?”

where: ministry atrium when: tuesday, february 28th, 7:50am who: open

The air around them all had changed with the reveal of the Ministry’s latest proclamation; the registry that had sent an undercurrent of fear through the community, even though statistically speaking, it could not have impacted that many. No, the fear was mostly what it might mean for the future—who else might be targeted eventually, if this went unchallenged.

Nadia made her way swiftly through the newly heightened security checkpoint before entering the atrium, trying not to think about it. The plan remains the same, her grandmother had written from their villa in Italy, we stay out of it.

She was not one to disagree with Amalia Zabini, but perhaps neutrality was a more feasible stance when you were over a thousand miles away.

A scuffle behind her broke her from her reverie, for a moment, and she spun around; someone had failed the security check, and they were currently being escorted elsewhere. Nadia frowned, making her way to the lift; and barely making it in time.

“Thanks for holding it.” She said to the person next to her, without looking up.

Camilla found it amusing to watch everyone scurry about with such obvious alarm but she hid that under a cool expression as she marched through the atrium on her way to the lift. Her position was most effective because everyone underestimated her. She liked looking the part of a thoughtless socialite when the truth was quite far from that. But she did take a minute when she was facing away from everyone to smirk about it all. When she turned back around, she eyed the disruption curiously, leaning forward ever so slightly to catch what was happening.

Holding the lift was a happy accident but she didn’t acknowledge that. “Of course,” she said politely. “Which floor?”

“It’s really amusing that you think that could actually upset me. I know I’m good enough and things will end exactly as I want them to.”

“No, I’m very sorry but I don’t have any answers about the registry - that’s not my department. I’m sure someone at the information desk would be able to direct you to the proper department.” Camilla smiled polite, hiding her frustration at yet another question from yet another frantic member of the populace who couldn’t be bothered to pay attention. She had work to do - not at the moment, actually, she was looking for a cup of coffee, but it was the principle of the thing. “I swear the next time that happens I will hex - please do not ask me about the registry.” She turned as she heard yet more approaching footsteps, her polite smile a fraction chillier now.

Sunglasses perched on the bridge of her nose, Mina started into her cup of coffee as she did her best to ignore the constant noise and movement around her. Sure, nursing a hangover in public was a bad idea in the first place, but her father had decided to visit her mother that day, and to avoid him, she had decided to go out of the house. Through her window, worrying the neighbour and ending up with her dad waving at her anyway, but hey. She was hungover, and she did do her best. Now, she was sitting down at a small metallic table outside a café, where she doubted she’d see anyone she knew. It wasn’t that Mina didn’t feel like talking; it was that her head might explode if she tried to string in more than three sentences in a row together. Problem was, there were people everywhere, and she groaned as she saw the shadow of someone over her table, before raising an eyebrow at her coffee when she heard the scraping of the chair in front of her against the ground. 

“We’ve got a visitor,” she muttered quietly to her cup, before letting her chin rest in her head and looking up at who had sat down in front of her. “Yes?”

Camilla was not overly pleased about her situation this morning but there was nothing to be done about it. She wanted a place where she could just be without worrying over who might be watching her so the cafe was ideal, but it was too crowded for a table of her own inside. Which left her looking for a place outside. “I just want to sit,” she said coolly at the question, glancing across the table. “If you don’t mind, of course.”

When: February 4, 2024, morning Where: A cafe Who: Victoire Weasley & anyone probably adults unless your student has a reason to be out

A morning could not, and should not, be started without coffee and a good book. Victoire had picked up the mentality during her sixth year at Hogwarts, and over the course of ten years it had served her well. She was a regular at her favorite cafe, and had been sitting at the same table since she and Dominique had moved down the street. This morning seemed to starting off like any other - the blonde’s nose was deep in her latest novel, taking sips from her mug every now and then, with copies of various newspapers sticking out from her bag. She would go into the offices soon and truly begin her day, but this was her time for herself.

Unlike most days, though, Victoire could begin to feel someone watching her. Looking up, she marked her place in the book, before her eyes fell on another figure, locking eyes as she raised her brows. “Can I help you with something?”

Camilla hesitated before making her way to the table, because she really would prefer simply to go to work and begin her day. But she was meant to look for ways to be useful and although she doubted she would learn anything useful right now, a friendship could be beneficial in the future. When Victoire looked up, she gestured to the empty seat. “Is that open? I’d prefer to eat at a table rather than at my desk again. Crumbs in the parchment make my reports look sloppy.”

“Yeah, I have to say, as far as break-up related revenge goes—or even just any sort of revenge, really—turning your ex into a duck with cornflake skin is both extremely unexpected and wildly effective. Definitely the weirdest Valentines incident I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh wow, that’s . . . something. Maybe I’ll have to keep that in mind for if I ever need to take revenge on an ex. It seems a bit dramatic for my personal tastes though. I’d probably keep it for something very extreme. Not that I’m saying I would do such a thing, of course.”
