The first pride was a riot, more specifically a riot against police violence. Trans women like Miss Major and other people of colour paved the way for the celebration of pride today. You cannot celebrate your pride this month, or any month if you arenât also supporting Black Lives Matter and the riots going on against police violence right now. Us white LGBTQ+ need to stand up for our black siblings and their rights, their struggles. unrelated to anything but my girlfriend and i watched hotel transylvania a while ago so tonight we decided to watch the second one and i am so disappointed in it. the first one is a great, funny, sweet movie that appeals to almost anybody and the second one has humour exclusively meant to cater to kids (a lot of silent shots with physical humour like oh a tennis ball hit him in the crotch or the fat mummyâs butt wiggles while facing the camera) while also somehow including heteronormativity (mavis & johnnyâs 5 y/o son and the werewolf coupleâs young daughter for some reason have a romantic storyline) and the trope where husbands hate their wives (p sure the only time johnnyâs dad smiles is when his wife canât talk) and mildly lewd humour (drac gives the invisible man a purple nurple, vlad says johnnyâs wig looks like his grandmothers âboobiesâ) and they include things that i am just positive are insensitive if not plain racist (like the mummy chanting in a fake egyptian language while doing dramatic movements + another scene i canât remember but noted when we watched it) and they totally reduce johnny to comic relief and make him look sad & pathetic & a pushover & make his formerly sentimental attachment to his exploring backpack just. weird. it sucked and iâm disappointed cause i loved the first movie! maybe i am just simply too old now to be watching animated family movies. maybe all the recent ones are like this. i donât know but i wanted to talk abt it
wait i have more to say because iâm dumb and care about a childrenâs movie
it felt like the animation style wasnât consistent throughout the movie which was pretty distracting, and it didnât feel like there was enough narrative dialogue? it was a lot of joke aimed at young children, vague plot dialogue, rinse and repeat. and donât get me started on the plot.
the whole movie is about mavis and johnnyâs son dennis not being a vampire, because he reaches his fifth birthday without showing any signs of being a vampire. this prompts drac to, in usual drac fashion, come up with a plan so that mavis will leave dennis alone with him so he can show dennis what real monsters are like in an effort to coax out the monster in him. so he gets johnny to take mavis on a vacation to his hometown of california where, because the subplot of the movie is that mavis wants to move dennis out of the monster hotel because sheâs worried it isnât the best or safest place for him, johnny will convince her that moving isnât a good idea because he and drac want them to stay living at the hotel. so johnny and mavis go off to visit california and drac takes dennis, frankenstein, murray the mummy, wayne the werewolf, and griffin the invisible man out to all their old favourite haunts so they can scare the monster in dennis our of hiding. and blobby the green blob monster tags along.
anyway. it SEEMS like the whole message of the movie is going to be along the lines of âitâs okay if you arenât what people expect you to beâ or âyou donât have to be something youâre notâ but it feels like thatâs all for nothing because at the very end of the movie, it turns out dennis IS a vampire! how do we find that out? winnie and dennis are taken hostage by vladâs henchman/boyfriend (no idea what he was supposed to be because the introduced new characters suddenly and with little introduction) takes them hostage because he finds out mavis married a human and had a child with one. winnie, one of the child love interests, gets hurt so dennis becomes enraged and sprouts vampire fangs along with super-vampire strength, thus beginning the ending scene where a 5 year old bat fights a bunch of bat-gargoyle-creatures. my girlfriend and i agreed it wouldâve felt much more impactful if dennis didnât turn out to be a vampire, but instead showed that he still has his own strengths & showed drac finally accepting that his grandson wasnât what he was expecting & hoping him to be. grr i care too much about a childrenâs movie and i am going to bed now
