but like. ugh god. teenage boy confessing feelings to teenage girl telling her all the reasons he likes her. she confesses that she's gay. and as soon as he gets what she's saying he immediately rolls with it and makes her laugh and they become best friends. because he Meant everything he said that he thinks she's cool and funny and smart and makes him laugh more than he's ever laughed. like that doesn't change bc she isn't into him. he just loves her and wants her in his life.

the fact that you spend most of the season like assuming robin is Steve's Love Interest and only learn that she's not and that she's actually a lesbian toward the end is so beautiful. like you see all of these moments between them through the lens of romance and then it's suddenly recontextualized and now you have this like. allowance of deep emotional and physical intimacy between a man and a woman in a purely platonic context with absolutely zero chance of it ever dipping into romance. as well as like this recasting of robin's feelings of being excluded from the popular crowd and feeling like an outsider. robin suddenly becomes her own fully-formed character whose sexual unavailability to men doesn't impact her importance to the narrative or to the other characters—in fact, if anything it brings her and steve closer together, and after she comes out to him, robin becomes less acerbic, more open and silly, more comfortable.

the stobin bathroom scene is also like. one of the greatest scenes in the show i would literally call it the best if not for s4 running up that hill. because it's such a real human moment between all of the chaos. there's no overwrought inspirational monologues like it's a Conversation and the dialogue feels so natural. it also comes after like a full season of steve and robin developing their relationship and so it feels Earned like their vulnerability with each other was hard-won.

in comparison having will like. talk to robin about being gay for a couple of episodes. and then suddenly tap into this immense power he didn't know he had to save his crush. it just feels incredibly contrived and overdramatic. like why are these two things connected. will has spent like the past two seasons crying because he feels left behind by his friends having girlfriends and because his crush isn't reciprocated. it just feels so lame that like after four seasons of will not really. developing on his own besides learning to be nice to el and respectful of her and mike dating. they rush through this #acceptance thing by literally just having the lesbian monologue at him. like it's cute that they decided to have him become stronger through accepting himself but the execution is so corny and feels So incongruous with like everything we've seen with how everyone else's powers work.
