izuku’s smile softens & he utters a quiet  ‘ thank you ’  as the other sets down their drinks , allowing a peaceful moment of silence to pass . just the fact it isn’t awkward is enough to make izuku feel glad .  already aware of the todoroki’s unfortunate circumstances , he can only assume that his presence is a welcome change ; another reason that makes izuku want to stay . he’ll stay for as long as he’s allowed if it helps in any little way .

       thoughts drift their way backward to the earlier days of their knowing each other ,   of a boy with wild eyes & broken digits protruding his fists .   albeit , his friend learning more control brought a sense of relief to his heart .   they’d both taken things too far the one time they’d faced each other in such a way ,  & if the teachers hadn’t intervened . . .

Toshinori nearly feels like chuckling, holds it to himself. There’s nothing funny, per say, on Shoto’s words, only his own thoughts of how much his former colleague would be annoyed about this. He lays a hand on the young man’s shoulder, motioning for him to straighten up. “ I have only been doing my job— all I can hope is that I have managed to pass on some of the knowledge I gathered over the years, and… you are but one of my students. I would never dream of treating you any other way. ”

        back slumped against the wall ,   he’d  been camped out in that hallway for god knows how long by this point .  it didn’t matter anyways ,  nothing he could do or say would change that the exam had been failed .   over a stupid argument ,  over some shiketsu high kid provoking him so much so he couldn’t think or act clearly .   it hadn’t taken more than a moment of leaving the arena to get the scolding of his life from dear old dad ,  regardless of if other exiting students (  who passed their exams , nonetheless ,  )  to overhear every detail .    couldn’t get a word in edgewise ,  even if he’d wanted to ,  and it left shouto cold and retreated into a familiar shell of himself .    (  what was that back there ?   that ’ s the best you could do ?   was all of our training merely a joke to you , shouto ?   and here i thought you said you’d be fine without my guidance anymore   !   maybe we’ll need to  change that . your performance today made a joke of our name.    see you at home , boy .    )         

what does that mean , i don’t know ? brows are furrowed as he tries to think , tries to understand from shouto’s point of view . a difficult task , since they themselves were so different . he swallows a gulp , shifts where he stands ,   ‘ . . THAT’S ALRIGHT . ’   & he means that wholeheartedly . if shouto doesn’t know if he can love him , then izuku won’t hold anything against him . he’s still his friend . 

           ‘ todoro — ’   he suddenly cuts himself short ;  he doesn’t know what to say . what even is there to say ? taking in a quiet breath izuku timidly continues ,   ‘ . . shouto . ’  his own hands are entwined in front of his torso , thumbs brushing against his fingers , an effort to ground himself .

          ‘ you deserve to be loved , you know that , don’t you ? & also to love others . . ! you’re allowed to love & be loved . ’   is that something the other needs to hear ? but regardless . . izuku wants to let him know . 

      what the hell ,  shouto  ?    why would you  say that  ?     he ‘d never longed more to be able to retract a statement than now , and yet it weighed down the oxygen around them to a choking pressure.     it was too late  &   the todoroki boy knew this to be fact .    teeth were gritted together so unyielding he swore they’d shatter and fall to the cement .   an exasperated whine left his lungs , hands swinging to tear at split hair .  they remained there , palms clammy and resting on the back of a pounding head .  every word received from the other only made his cheeks burn brighter ,  and he hated it .  this was all so foreign ,  so delicate    ━    nothing that had ever been felt before in his life .  it had triggered so many frozen-awake nights of scribbling onto notepads of words he just might’ve said once , or just staring at the ceiling .   where were those desperate pronouncements now ?   it felt like an eternity that he’d been silent ,  and the fear of being the cause of midoriya ever crying was stiffening his limbs up .  something had to come out , no matter what it may be   (  anything to make this better !    )     

           ‘    i never  learned   that .    ‘      did it make any sense ?   he couldn’t be sure ,   and meeting eye contact to check if the utterance was received wasn’t an option or his own waterworks may start to brim .   ‘    this wasn’t part of the plan i had ,   midoriya  .   i don’t know where to go from here .   i don’t want my issues to burden you   ━   there’s too much you need to focus on first .   my father ;    what would he say  ?   what would we   do   ?    what is this ?   ‘
