On this date in 1933, the Emergency Conservation Work Act was placed on President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s desk to be signed. A part of The New Deal, this was an effort to bring America out of the Great Depression through work relief and jobs programs. The Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, was a direct result of the act, providing employment for 3 million young men, ages 17-28, over the course of its nine year operation. Between May 11, 1933 and March 31, 1942, ten CCC camps were established within, or on leased land adjacent to, Shenandoah National Park. At any one time, more than 1,000 boys and young men lived in camps supervised by the Army here.
