Our Girl - Sidney Crosby x Daughter Reader - Pt. 1
Sidney Crosby x Kathy Leutner (romantic), Sidney Crosby x Daughter Reader (platonic)
Summary: You have Spina Bifida, but that doens't change how much they love you.
Warnings: spina bifida, traumatic birth, diagnosis, hospitals
You are here! | Part 2
Word Count: 3,150
requests open :)
Spina Bifida is a congenital condition that effects every 1 in 2,000 births.
And no one thinks it will be them
The clinic room is dim, lit only by the soft blue glow of the ultrasound screen.
Kathy is smiling before the wand even touches her stomach.
Sidโs already leaning forward in his chair, elbows on his knees, like heโs watching a Game 7 overtimeโexcept this time, his hands arenโt clenched from nerves. Theyโre open, resting on Kathyโs thigh, thumb brushing slow, absent circles.
Theyโve done this before. Once at twelve weeks and once at sixteen weeks. Just quick checks. Everything perfect both times.
But twenty weeks is different.
This is the one where they get to see their baby.
โReady?โ the tech asks gently.
Kathy nods immediately. โYeahโyeah, weโve been ready for weeks.โ
Sid huffs out a quiet laugh. โMonths.โ
The gel is cold, but Kathy barely reacts. Her eyes are locked on the screen the second the image flickers into view.
There.
Their baby.
You can see her head, her tiny spine, the curve of her body. She shifts, just slightly, like she knows sheโs being watched.
โOh my God,โ Kathy breathes.
Sid doesnโt say anything at first. He just stares.
โThere are some findings on the ultrasound that we need to talk about.โ
Sidโs hand is gripping Kathyโs now. Hard.
The doctor turns the screen slightly, pointing.
โThis is your babyโs spine,โ she says. โAnd hereโaround the lower back, at about the L2 levelโweโre seeing an opening.โ
Kathy stares at the screen, not understanding.
โAn opening?โ Sid asks, voice tight.
โItโs a condition called myelomeningocele, which is the most severe form of spina bifida.โ
The words donโt land all at once. They kind of scatter.
โWhat does that mean?โ Kathy whispers.
The doctorโs voice stays calm. Steady.
โIt means that part of your babyโs spinal cord and nerves havenโt developed properly and are exposed through an opening in the spine.โ
Kathyโs breath catches.
The doctor continues, gently but clearly.
โBecause of where itโs locatedโat L2, in the lumbar regionโyour daughter will not have normal movement or sensation below that level. She will not be able to walk independently, and itโs very likely she wonโt be able to stand without significant support.โ
Sid closes his eyes for a second.
Kathy just stares.
Not blinking.
Not moving.
โThere are also other things that often come with this,โ the doctor says. โMany children with myelomeningocele develop hydrocephalusโfluid buildup in the brain. To treat that, they usually need something called a VP shunt.โ
Kathy swallows. โWhatโs that?โ
โItโs a small device thatโs surgically placed to drain excess fluid from the brain into the abdomen, where the body can absorb it. It helps relieve pressure and protects the brain.โ
Sid nods slowly, like heโs forcing himself to understand every word.
โThere can also be bladder and bowel challenges,โ the doctor continues. โYour daughter will likely need lifelong support with those functions.โ
Kathyโs hand drifts down to her stomach.
Instinct.
Protective.
โThere may be orthopedic issues as she growsโthings like scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine, hip dislocations, tightness in her joints, and clubbed feet.โ
The list feels endless.
Heavy.
โBut,โ the doctor says softly, โthereโs more.โ
Kathyโs eyes flick up.
โWe also see signs of something called a Chiari II malformation.โ
Sid exhales sharply. โWhat is that?โ
โItโs when part of the brainโthe cerebellum and brainstemโare positioned lower than usual, extending into the spinal canal. It can affect things like swallowing, coordination, and sometimes vision. Some children have a reduced gag reflex, difficulty feeding early on, or shaky eye movement issues like nystagmus.โ
Kathy feels like sheโs sinking.
Like the chair is disappearing beneath her.
Like she canโt get enough air.
โBut I need you to hear this too,โ the doctor says, leaning forward slightly.
And something in her tone shifts.
Warmer.
Stronger.
โMany children with spina bifidaโespecially with the right supportโhave normal cognitive development. Your daughter has a very high chance of being intellectually typical.โ
Kathy blinks.
โThat means she can learn, think, communicate, form opinionsโbe independent in her own ways.โ
Sid looks at her then.
Really looks.
โShe can have a full, meaningful life,โ the doctor says gently. โShe will face challenges, yes. Significant ones. But she can also be strong, capable, and completely herself.โ
The room is quiet.
Too quiet.
Kathy finally looks back at the screen.
At their daughter.
Still.
Small.
Perfect.
Her voice breaks when she speaks.
โSheโs stillโฆ our girl.โ
Sid nods immediately, his hand coming up to cradle the back of her head.
โYeah,โ he says, rough. โYeah, she is.โ
He looks at the screen too now.
At his daughter.
His voice is quieter when he addsโ
โNothing about that changes.โ
Kathy leans into him, tears slipping silently down her cheeks.
โBut everything else does,โ she whispers.
Sid presses his lips to her hair.
And for the first time since they walked in, he doesnโt have an answer. He just holds her tighter.
And stares at their little girl, already loving her more than anything in the world.
Months later, the delivery room is loud in a way Kathy didnโt expect.
Not chaoticโjust full.
Voices, movement, the steady rhythm of machines. A team already in place before sheโs even fully aware of them. Neonatology. Neurosurgery on standby. Nurses moving with quiet efficiency.
Everything is prepared.
Because they already know.
Sid never lets go of her hand.
Not once.
โYouโre doing so good,โ he keeps saying, over and over, his voice low and steady against her ear. โYouโve got her. Weโve got her.โ
Kathy nods, breath shaky, body exhaustedโbut her mind is locked on one thing.
Her daughter.
โIs she okay?โ she asks between contractions, again and again. โWhen she comes outโis she going to be okay?โ
No one lies to her.
But no one leaves her alone in it either.
โWeโre ready for her,โ one of the doctors says gently. โThe second sheโs born, weโll take care of her.โ
When it finally happens, itโs fast.
A rush of movement.
One last pushโ
And thenโ
A cry.
High. Sharp. Immediate.
Kathy sobs the second she hears it. โThatโs herโthatโs herโโ
Sidโs head drops forward for a second, relief crashing through him so hard his knees almost give out.
โSheโs crying,โ he says, voice breaking. โSheโs crying, Kathโsheโsโโ
But he doesnโt finish.
Because the room shifts.
Not panic.
Not exactly.
But urgency.
Controlled. Focused.
Their daughter is only briefly liftedโjust enough for Kathy to see a glimpse of her face, red and scrunched and aliveโ
โand then sheโs turned carefully, very carefully, onto her stomach.
โWhyโwhy are theyโ?โ Kathyโs voice spikes.
The doctor is already speaking, calm but quick. โShe has an exposed spinal lesion on her lower back. We need to protect it.โ
Sidโs chest tightens.
He canโt see it clearly from where heโs standing, but he sees enough.
A small, fragile sac at her lower spine.
Uncovered.
Vulnerable.
Everything in him wants to move closer, to do something, but thereโs already a team surrounding her.
They place her proneโon her stomachโso thereโs no pressure on the lesion.
A nurse immediately covers it with sterile, saline-soaked dressings and a clear protective wrap.
โIs she okay?โ Kathy asks again, voice shaking harder now. โWhy arenโt they bringing her to me?โ
โThey need to stabilize her first,โ someone says gently.
But Kathyโs already crying.
Sid leans down, pressing his forehead to hers. โSheโs here,โ he whispers. โSheโs here, okay? Sheโs fighting.โ
Minutes later, they bring Sid over.
โDad, you can come see her.โ
He hesitates for half a secondโjust enough to look back at Kathy.
โGo,โ she says immediately. โGo with her.โ
He crosses the room slow.
And then he stops.
Because there she is.
So small.
So real.
Wrapped carefullyโbut not like a typical newborn.
Sheโs still on her stomach, her lower back covered in that protective dressing. There's tubes and monitors everywhere. But he can see her tiny chest rising and falling.
Her legs are still.
Completely still.
Sid swallows hard.
โHey,โ he whispers, crouching down beside her. โHey, baby girlโฆโ
His hand hovers for a second before he gently touches her shoulderโone of the only safe places.
She reacts.
Just slightly.
But itโs enough.
His throat closes.
โSheโs strong,โ one of the nurses says softly. โShe came out crying, which is a great sign.โ
He nods, eyes burning. โYeah. Yeah, she is.โ
Within the first hour, things move quickly.
They donโt wait with myelomeningocele.
โIn the next 24 to 48 hours, sheโll need surgery to close the opening on her spine,โ the neurosurgeon explains to both of them once Kathy is able to see her.
Kathyโs still in bed, pale and exhausted, but she refuses to rest until she knows everything.
โTheyโll cover the exposed nerves, protect the spinal cord, and reduce the risk of infection,โ he continues. โItโs the first step.โ
Kathy nods, clutching the blanket. โAnd the fluid in her brain?โ
โWeโll monitor closely,โ he says. โMany babies develop hydrocephalus in the first days or weeks. If that happens, weโll place a VP shunt.โ
Sid glances at Kathy.
They both remember.
A tube.
Draining fluid from her brain to her little tummy.
Later, in the NICU, Kathy finally gets to see her up close.
Really see her.
Their daughterโs eyes flutter open briefly.
Dark.
Unfocused.
Perfect.
Kathy reaches out carefully, her hand trembling as it brushes her tiny arm.
โHi,โ she whispers, tears slipping down her temples into her hair. โHi, my girlโฆโ
Sid stands beside her, one hand on Kathy, the other resting gently near their daughter.
โSheโs so little,โ Kathy says.
โAnd so stubborn already,โ Sid murmurs. โCame out yelling.โ
Kathy lets out a soft, broken laugh.
But then her eyes drift.
To the monitors.
To the careful positioning.
To the reality of everything they were told.
โSheโs not moving her legs,โ she whispers.
Sidโs jaw tightens.
โI know.โ
A long pause.
โBut sheโs here,โ he says quietly. โSheโs here, Kath.โ
Their daughter makes a small sound.
Not a full cry.
Just a soft, protesting noise.
And Kathy smiles through her tears.
โYeah,โ she says, voice shaking. โYeah, she is.โ
That night, neither of them leaves.
Not really.
Even when the nurses insist on rest, on sleep, on taking turnsโ
they always come back to her bedside.
Watching.
Listening.
Learning her.
The wires.
The dressings.
The careful way she has to be handled.
Itโs overwhelming.
Terrifying.
Nothing like what they imagined.
But somewhere in the middle of itโ
Sid leans down close to her, voice soft enough that only she could hear if she understood.
โYouโve got a whole team already, kid,โ he murmurs. โAnd youโve got us.โ
Kathy reaches over, resting her hand beside his.
โWeโre not going anywhere,โ she whispers.
And their daughter, their tiny, stubborn, incredibly here daughter breathes steadily.
A month later, the discharge doesnโt feel real.
Not at first.
There are too many papers. Too many instructions. Too many pauses where someone looks at them just a second longer than normal and says, โCall us if anything feels off. Even if youโre not sure.โ
Kathyโs holding the baby when the nurse starts going over it all again.
โSoโher shunt,โ the nurse says gently, nodding toward their daughterโs head. โShe had the VP shunt placed to manage the fluid in her brain. Itโs working well right now, but you need to watch for signs that it might not be.โ
Sid is already nodding.
Heโs been listening to every word like itโs game film.
โWhat kind of signs?โ he asks.
โIn a baby this youngโvomiting, especially repeated. Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking her. A high-pitched cry thatโs different from her normal. Bulging of the soft spot on her head. Rapid head growth. Irritability that you canโt settle.โ
Kathy instinctively adjusts the blanket around her daughter, like she can protect her from all of it just by holding her tighter.
The nurse continues.
โAnd because of her Chiari II malformation, watch for any changes in her breathingโpauses, noisy breathing, trouble feeding, choking, anything like that.โ
Kathy nods, eyes fixed on her babyโs face.
โOkay.โ
โThereโs more,โ another nurse adds softly, stepping in with a small stack of supplies.
A stack is an understatement.
Itโs bags.
Boxes.
Care kits.
โYouโll need to continue her catheterizations as instructed,โ she says. โThat helps her bladder empty safely. Weโve included everything youโll need to start.โ
Kathyโs throat tightens, but she nods again.
โAnd for her bowel programโyour care team will help you build a routine as she grows.โ
Sid glances at the supplies, then back at their daughter.
Itโs a lot.
Itโs so much.
But he doesnโt hesitate.
โOkay,โ he says. โWeโll figure it out.โ
The nurse smiles at him. โYou will.โ
By the time theyโre actually walking out, Kathy feels like sheโs carrying something made of glass and gravity at the same time.
Their daughter is strapped into the car seatโcarefully positioned, extra padding to keep pressure off her back.
Sid checks the straps three times.
Then a fourth.
โSid,โ Kathy says softly, exhausted but amused.
โI know,โ he mutters. โI justโyeah. Okay.โ
He closes the car door like it might shatter.
The drive home is quiet.
Every little sound from the back seat makes Kathy turn her head.
Every breath.
Every shift.
โSheโs okay,โ Sid says gently, glancing at her.
โI know,โ Kathy whispers. โI justโฆ I want to see her.โ
โTwo minutes,โ he says. โWeโre almost there.โ
When they pull into the driveway, neither of them moves right away.
Home.
It looks the same.
Exactly the same.
But it doesnโt feel the same.
Sid exhales slowly. โOkay.โ
Kathy nods.
โOkay.โ
Inside, everything is ready.
The bassinet.
The changing station.
The impossibly tiny clothes.
All of it set up weeks ago with excitement.
Now it feels different.
Heavier.
More real.
Kathy settles onto the couch carefully, cradling their daughter against her chest.
โSheโs home,โ she whispers, almost like she doesnโt believe it.
Sid stands there for a second, just looking at them.
Then he moves.
Not toward the couch.
Toward the hallway.
Kathy blinks. โSid?โ
โIโll be right back,โ he says, already halfway down.
She hears doors opening.
Closing.
Footsteps.
Thenโ
โโฆweโre gonna have to widen that.โ
Kathy frowns. โWhat?โ
Sid reappears, gesturing vaguely toward the front of the house. โThe doorwayโitโs not wide enough for a wheelchair.โ
Kathy just stares at him.
He keeps going.
โAnd the front stepsโweโll need a ramp. Same with the back patio. And the yardโthere are dips back there, we should probably level it out so nothing gets caughtโโ
โSid.โ
He stops.
Finally looks at her.
Their daughter is curled against Kathyโs chest, fast asleep, tiny hand tucked under her chin.
โShe is one month old,โ Kathy says gently.
Sid blinks.
โโฆI know.โ
โShe is not using a wheelchair tomorrow.โ
โI know,โ he repeats, softer this time.
Thereโs a pause.
And then Kathy smiles.
Because she sees it.
What this actually is.
โYouโre already planning how sheโs going to move through the world,โ she says.
Sidโs shoulders drop just slightly.
โYeah,โ he admits.
Kathyโs smile widens, eyes shining.
โThatโsโฆ really sweet.โ
He huffs out a quiet breath, rubbing the back of his neck. โI justโI donโt want anything in her way.โ
Kathy looks down at their daughter.
At how small she is.
How new.
How completely unaware of every obstacle being mapped out ahead of her.
Then walks back over, dropping down beside her on the couch.
He reaches out, brushing a finger gently over their daughterโs cheek.
โSheโs still gonna run the place,โ he murmurs.
Kathy laughs quietly. โOh, absolutely.โ
A small sound escapes the babyโjust a sleepy little sigh.
And both of them freeze for a second.
Watching.
Waiting.
She settles again.
Kathy leans her head against Sidโs shoulder.
โWeโll learn everything,โ she says. โAll of it. The shunt, the routines, everything they told us.โ
Sid nods, resting his head lightly against hers.
โYeah.โ
โAnd when sheโs ready,โ Kathy adds, glancing toward the hallway he disappeared down earlier, โweโll figure out ramps and doorways and all of that.โ
Sid smiles faintly.
โDeal.โ
They sit there for a while.
Quiet.
No monitors.
No hospital noise.
Just the soft, steady breathing of their daughter between them.
And for the first time since all of this began it feels like maybe, just maybe, they can do this.

Iโve said this before and Iโll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
โoh we shouldnโt teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where itโs noisy or they need to be quietโ
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
Update: you guys this is an amazing resource for learning asl. Bill Vicars is an incredible teacher. His videos are of him teaching a student in a classroom, using the learned vocabulary to have conversations.
Not only is the conversation format immersive and helpful for learning the grammar, but the students make common mistakes which he corrects, mistakes I wouldnโt have otherwise know I was making.
He also emphasizes learning ASL in the way itโs actually used by the Deaf community and not the rigid structure that some ASL teachers impose in their classrooms
His lesson plans include learning about the Deaf community, which is an important aspect of learning ASL. Knowing how to communicate in ASL without the knowledge of the culture behind it leaves out a lot of nuances and explanations for the way ASL is.
Lastly, his lessons are just a lot of fun to watch. He is patient, entertaining, and funny. This good natured enthusiasm is contagious and learning feels like a privilege and not a chore
And itโs all FREE. Seriously. If youโve ever wanted to learn ASL
as a reader myself i can't imagine complaining about fanfiction.
heads up:: complaining about what you can't find under the x reader tags won't make it any easier to find. and also as someone who used to write...do you know why most writers started writing? because they couldn't find the content they wanted to read
so for the love of GOD PLEASE shut up about the lack or overload of smut or fluff or whateverthefuck.
writers aren't your fucking genies and all your fanfictions wishes aren't obligated to come true because you whined under 100+ x reader tags.

Could be better but it's not the worst, i got sick last week but I'm better now.
I'm currently looking for work while in a work thing to help me find work. (I don't know how to describe it since I can't find an English word for what I'm in)
It's not really an event, it's sort of like schooling i guess, basically we get money for going there and the people there are supposed to help us find a job/ work Training, because here in Germany you have to go through training for 3 years for any job you want to take.
or like getting interrogated on your mother's family's criminal and psychological history for or some shit for three weeks and then you need to ritually sacrifice a wild boar to actually get the job, usually its a combination of the two :)
Well you do still have to meet with your future employer and see if they'll accept you to do your training there.
But yea you go through training for 3 years which consists of regular ass work and School either two days every week or what's known as Block school which is like a week or two of regular work and a week or two school.
I'm interested in becoming basically a medical assistant so I'd work under a general practitioner as an example. Basically a nurse just for a GP and not the Hospital
Technically i already had a place last August but i quit during my Probation time. Here you go through a few months of probation (the time frame for the probation is specified in the contract you sign) and during that time either you or your Employer can decide to end the contract without having to give a reason. After the probation time is over though if you want to quit or your employer wants to fire you, you/your employer has to be notified in a time frame of four weeks with a reason as to why you're quitting/why you're getting fired.
I ended my work at the Eye Doctor i was at during my probation because I didn't feel exactly comfortable, it didn't have anything to do with the doctor or the other workers because that's the eye doctor i go to but mostly because this specific office also does surgeries on eyes, think for taking care of cataracts. And that's not what i wanted to learn.
Anyway, i hope i get another place soon.
(is it noticeable i like explaining how stuff works here in Germany?)
i saw this notification, read it, and shouted "PROBATION!?!?" in my head because usually i've only heard that word used for the prision kind of probation.
anyways yes that kind of probation makes more sense when explained further.
hmm eye doctor would certainly be interesting, personally i'm not sure if i would do it for any other reason than learning resources to help with my poor eyesight and the condition i have.
and dw! i love hearing how things work in other countries, this is very interesting!

๐ฅ bf!tamsy who, after enough nagging, finally gives in and lets you see the scars spread across his chest, eyes softening despite himself as you trace the jagged edges with the light drag of a fingernail.
โข bf!tamsy who takes one look at the tear in your clothes and doesnโt even consider sending you to august. absolutely not. he quietly takes them from your hands, needle already threaded, because thereโs no way in hell heโs going to allow that scatterbrained man lay his fingers on fabric thatโs been against your skin.
๐ฅ bf!tamsy who lets you curl up on his lap without a word, you pepper soft kisses along his cheek, and he waitsโpatient, indulgentโas they drift closer to his lips. when your bottom lip brushes his labret piercing, it catches just enough to remind you itโs there, cool metal against warmth.
โข bf!tamsy who feels the moment you lose focus, fingers coming up to toy with it instead, curiosity overtaking intent. a quiet chuckle slips from him at that, fond, as his finger brushes against your hip.
๐ฅ bf!tamsy who sings you lullabies when you tell him you feel restless. his slight accent catching onto the tips of his melodized words. the cadence deems itself unfamiliar to your ears, however, itโs hard to care when you drift off within minutes every time.
โข bf!tamsy who always makes sure you end up seated beside him in the car whenever enjin ropes team eager into another mission with team akuta. he lets you rest your head against his collarboneโbut only on the ride back, when the job is done and youโve already worked yourself thin doing exactly what was asked of you.
๐ฅ bf!tamsy who fights the muscles in his face, forcing them into stillness even as a shadow of a grimace threatens to slip through when your weak, fevered body clings to him in desperation. the mission heโs dispatched to is mandatory, but before he leaves, he gathers what little composure he has left and presses a careful kiss into your clammy palm, (despite all the germs heโs sure are wandering the surface).
โข bf!tamsy who lets you fuss over his injuries, deliberately steering clear of eisha just so your pretty hands can tend to him instead. he tilts his head, quietly amused, listening to you ramble about him needing to be more careful next time.
โnow, now, my dear.. thereโs no need to get so worked up.โ
๐ฅ bf!tamsy who lets you braid his long, pretty hair to your heartโs content, patiently allowing you to intertwine his locks into a two-toned braid. he has one condition though, you have to face him while you work, so he can watch the adorable little expression you make when youโre concentratingโhis words.

hi everyone. this is mira @simplybakugou iโm tagging people that read the mystic academia series because iโm an idiot and fell for a scam that led to my account being hacked and deleted. iโm working with tumblr support to both recover my account and regain access to it as well.
please reblog this so people know i didnโt just delete my account out of nowhere.
i will still be working on bakugouโs route of mystic academia but please be patient while i navigate this incredibly difficult and fucked up situation.
When are you going to continue the masterlist for the mighty nein? Ignore this if it sounds mean, or you're already doing more mighty nein or aren't feeling well both physically or emotionally, or if you have writer's block
I as it stands right now am not intending on writing anything, i made a post a few weeks ago. I think it's pinned somewhere i my Master post that I'm on a Hiatus, i don't know when or if I'll return since my life has become pretty hectic and I barely have time to write.
I may write small blurbs for the mighty Nine or other Critical role campaigns but definitely no new stories at this point.
Also don't worry it didn't sound mean or anything, you were simply curious I can't fault anyone for that. Thank you for enjoying my stories while i did write them.
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

@nanamineedstherapy I fucking love you for saying the things I could never put into words.
I was looking for fics and in my search I found a dope post delving into fictional men but there are some specific parts that really fuckin spoke to me:
I would reblog the entire thing but it was too big and the parts in red are the ones that really spoke to me.
I'm guessing you guys have already noticed but i haven't posted anything in a while, mostly because I've kinda lost interest in writing fanfictions, at least for now. I haven't written anything in months and i doubt I'll be able to in the next coming months because I'm starting work Tomorrow and that's gonna take up a lot of my time, so for the time being this account will be achieved/ put on a indefinite Hiatus, I'll still post on here just no Story's.
I don't know if I'll come back to writing, I'll have to see, but i hope you enjoyed my writing, at least what little i did post. Thank you for reading and i hope to see you all again.
