I could see him being the kinda guy to prep roadtrip snacks the night before, and going with something plain like regular old saltine crackers, sometimes with cheese or peanut butter and banana slices.

Yes. For the first time when someone at Torchwood One sends out an office-wide email looking for folks to join a new D&D campaign. Ianto feels embarrassed even opening the email and does it like someone trying to win an online auction using the office's highspeed internet rather than someone opening up an email sent to one of the office's listservs.

See, the thing is, Ianto has always wanted to play D&D or at least try it once. But he had had appearances to keep up and the circles he ran in as a teen wouldn't have taken kindly to this kind of nerd shit. Sure you could like Star Wars, everyone liked Star Wars, but you didn't play Magic and you sure as hell didn't play some pansy make-believe game like D&D. No, you beat the shit out of kids like that and then took their money to buy booze, cigs, and drugs.

But he's at Torchwood now, where, if Ianto's being honest, even the coolest people are fucking nerds. Because you had to be if you're in the alien-fighting business.

So he responds to the email (being very very careful not to click 'Reply All').

And he joins his first campaign.

And he loves it.

Then the Tower fell.

Then he lost his friends.

And at first he hates Torchwood Three. And he resents his coworkers.

And when he finally doesn't, when they're friends, it's busy because Torchwood Three is staffed by one immortal and four sleep deprived nerds. And...

Well, Ianto's friends die. That's what they do. Because life isn't a campaign, you don't get to come back next time as a different character, and they rolled a lot of fucking nat 1s.
