Through flashbacks in Thirteen (04 x 04), we see that the torture the episode’s perpetrator inflicts on his victims is a direct reminder to Megan of what she helped the US Government do to countless others. Megan deeply, horrifically hurts people —in ways that “characters” aren’t supposed to get hurt.

But this gamification was how she protected herself from the mental strain of her work. Without it, Megan doesn’t have an easy method to withstand the gore. Even worse, creating tangible and real harm to people who never deserved that level of harm forces Megan to confront her mission as an FBI agent and what “fidelity, bravery, integrity” actually means.
