That’s not what the word means, and pretending it is kind of misses the point on purpose.

"Centred” here is about focus in conversation, not “prove to me a historical era where trans men were universally prioritized.” Because no one serious is claiming that existed.

Also, “show me sources when trans men were centred” is kind of a trap question because it assumes centering has to look like dominance or obvious prominence to count. It doesn’t. It’s about default framing in specific discussions.

So when people say “decentre trans men,” they’re usually talking about not defaulting to them as the assumed reference point in every trans-related conversation, especially when other groups are being discussed.

For one thing, it’s taking a small group of people and then making assumptions about an entire demographic’s background. Plenty of trans women have never used 4chan, and plenty of people who have used 4chan don’t end up hating trans men.

More importantly, the argument skips over a lot of other possible explanations and jumps straight to a single cause. Online conflict between trans men and trans women can come from community tensions, algorithm-driven outrage, interpersonal experiences, differences in priorities, or just the fact that the most inflammatory voices get the most attention. None of that requires a shared 4chan upbringing.

I also think there’s a selection bias problem here. People are much more likely to notice and remember the trans women who are openly hostile toward trans men than the much larger number who aren’t. If you spend time in spaces where conflict gets amplified, it can start to feel like a widespread phenomenon even when you’re mostly seeing the loudest examples.

And honestly, saying “they all developed as trans people on 4chan” risks becoming the same kind of oversimplification that people criticize in other contexts. It reduces a diverse group of people with different histories, ages, communities, and experiences to a single stereotype.

People who claim all trans men are just quirky girls who never medically transition are obviously wrong. And people who act like testosterone is magic and solves every issue are also wrong. But neither of those things is the reason you need FMS.

Your need for FMS comes from your individual body, genetics, transition goals, and how testosterone affected you—not from somebody else’s misconceptions.

The better criticism is that these people erase the diversity of trans male experiences. Not every trans man gets the same results from T. Not every trans man passes effortlessly. Some need voice training, some want facial masculinization surgery, some pursue multiple surgeries, and some don’t pursue any. Pretending otherwise creates unrealistic expectations and misinformation.

But that’s different from saying they’re responsible for your medical expenses.

Someone can spread inaccurate ideas about transition without being the reason your transition requires a particular procedure. The stereotype is harmful because it’s false and dismissive, not because it literally caused your need for surgery.
