Cardiff half sign up
So it's been a while since I posted last but I have just registered for the Cardiff half marathon in October. Signing up for another event has started me thinking about training plans, faster times, and new kit. Firstly, training plans. Where do you even start?? There are so many ones, claiming to be the best, cutting down your times and getting you into the best shape. I have opted for the up and running 10k to half marathon training plan. It's easy to follow, given out on free pamphlets at their stores, and perfectly suited for my schedule. SecondLy, faster times. I have committed myself to fartleks this year. A painful and grueling training strategy that terrifies me but claims to boost your speed amazingly. This high speed interval training can help to improve your speed and endurance- crucial to me being able to complete the half! Thirdly, new kit. Always my favorite thing about a new race. I am currently exploring the new sports collection in h and m, although they definitely lack the technology for long distances, they are perfect for slow short runs and pre and post run stretching. And obviously, my favourite and go to sweaty Betty will be a feature of this half marathons kit!!!
I ran the Cheltenham Race for Life last weekend for the fifth time. Race for Life is a series of womens-only fundraising events all over the country throughout the summer season of every year.
Every year thousands of women take up running to raise money for Cancer Research. The event is perfectly organised, booming with empowering female music, bright pink running gear covers the Cheltenham racecourse, and Cancer Research even produce their own branded race for life running kit!
I so strongly recommend the race to all the women that I know because it not only provides "part-time" runners with a goal to train towards but also raises money for a brilliant cause!
So just do it and race for life.

Valentines Day
Valentines day is looming, conversations can be heard all over campus of where the best restaurant is, which is the best valentines restaurant deal (I'm sold on the allâyouâcanâeat steak house), the best outfit to wear, what to buy for your other half, and the best night out for those singletons among us. One thing is resoundingly important for all the ladies on campus, looking your best. Valentines day is annoyingly placed just after the years most depressing month where, despite everyone's best efforts to stick to their New Years resolutions,everyone has let things slide and no one is feeling their best. So these are my energy boosting, body smoothing, and muscle aching suggestions to get you in top shape for this valentines day⌠1.) No workout would be complete without some fat burning cardio on the treadmill, cross trainer, or bike. It's not about losing weight at this point but about releasing the endorphins and adrenalin to keep you feeling happy, energized,and stress free. 2.) If you're like me and hate walking into the male dominated weight area in the gym Either purchase yourself a cheap set of weights (http://www.tigerstores.co.uk/) is very good value, or join a body pump class at your gym. Within one week you will feel the physical difference that a small amount of weight lifting does for your body. Toning and strengthening your body for the big day.
3.) Body smoothing moisturizersâespecially post gym work out. This is always a nightmare for me as I suffer from dry skin and always get extremely hot in exercise. I would recommend Nivea intensive moisturizer for your body and then vitamin e face moisturizer for your face.This both seem to most successfully rehydrate and cool the skin without feeling like your caked in a greasy moisturizer.

Great core exercise. Roll yourself over the top go the ball do your toes on it and your arms are in a push up position, shoulder width apart, then roll the ball towards you using your abs!
5.) Headband. This may seem like a simple running accessory but no, yet another staple item that can come in many forms. In summer I use a thin strap headband purely to keep my hair from my face. While in winter I use a thick and warm headband that covers my ears (keeping me warm and also keeping my headphones Iâm) that is black with pink reflective straps on. An essential for any running girl with long hair that refuses to stay put.
4.) Base Layer. Especially crucial for the colder months or the northern cities- base layers keep you warm and prevent and rubbing that can be caused by harsh seams on short sleeves. In a range if colours and fabrics your base layer can be many things but itâs my top essential because itâs warm, practical, and makes a 9am run on a frosty morning not seem like the most horrendous thing.
3.) My IPod. An obvious choice for most runner! A good playlist will get you through the hardest workout, whether thatâs a gruelling long run out in the countryside or a strengthening session in the gym. I used to use an iPod that needed strapping to my arm- I found this annoying if I wanted to quickly change songs or check the time. Now I use a small iPod shuffle, perfect and lightweight with quick access to all of the essential buttons. Although it doesnât hold up in long distance racing it does the job for training sessions and half marathons!
2.) A Water Bottle. Now this one may be controversialâŚsome people love to run with them whilst others (like me) canât stand to hold something while they run. If you want to run with a bottle make sure it is light weight and has a suitable hand hole for easy carrying on long runs. For me, it is always important to take on water before I run and to make sure that as soon as I get back I have a bottle of water already cooled in the fridge and rehydrate myself ASAP to speed up recovery.

1.) Running jacket. My running jacket is the perfect winter warmer! Made by Gore, it is breathable, has thumb holes, can be fully unzipped (crucial for any runners who, like me, can get very hot), and has plenty of reflective tabs. Running jackets can be thick, heavy, light, bright yellow/orange/pinkâŚyou name it, someone has made it. But the most important thing to remember is to make sure it has reflective panels on it, that it can be easily removed if the weather changes, and that it has pockets for iPods/keys/money.
