Amazing reply. I sometimes forget how clever Xiao Yan Zi was in the original series.

Hello! Sorry for the long, long delay in responding - just rediscovered Tumblr's mailbox :)

Yep, you're right - most of the original cast didn't stick around for HZGG 3 (released in 2003) due to other engagements. Some folks did (Zhou Jie, Wang Yan, etc.) but the loss of several key cast members certainly affected the series' reception. As for a remake, Qiong Yao actually remade the entire series a couple years ago, combining all three parts into one production. The cast was entirely fresh though; she also modified several plot details and added a few new characters. Oddly, in my mind the HZGG storyline ends with part 2 - guess the beauty of fiction (unlike real life) is that you get to pretend what's real and not real ;)
