A headache steadily grew behind his eyes, both from the panic and the sun slowly creeping over the horizon. He should have guessed that this moment would come - this wasn’t supposed to be a permanent thing - but her presence had had an impact on him. More than he would’ve liked to admit. Quiet as she was, teaching her new things, the social aspects of the world especially, had opened up things within himself that he never believed would have existed. And with that awakening within him, she was creating a void with her absence. Don’t get attached, right? He should’ve listened to his gut instincts better. No one ever stayed, and with this life, anyone could be taken at any moment. “Cass!” He yelled for her name again as he searched the city thoroughly. He knew the place like the back of his hand, and by the time he’d determined she was no longer there, several hours had passed, the heat slowly building from the morning sun. It was time to look elsewhere. He sprinted to Pierce Station and hit the button for the Preserve. It was where they’d frequented, and thought he would find her there, knowing how much she was a creature of habit. But that meant being greeted by a herd of stalkers, creatures he didn’t really have the time for. He resorted to his grenades to take out the lot of them, sticking to higher ground as he went, trying to spot the familiar shock of blonde here somewhere.
She lay among the tortured creatures of the Preserve, sprawled in the grass, motionless and undisturbed by the wildlife. They must have forgotten her in her stillness or matched their scars to hers and thought her to be one of them. She was content to bide her time basking in the sun there, it settled nerves and halted the tension in her limbs. The first time he had brought her to the Preserve she had been on edge, just as she had been on edge everywhere they went. With time and a great deal of his patience, she had learned to relax and to slow down enough to appreciate peace. Her peace would be over soon, however--she had predicted the outcome and had calculated the time.
Gunshots. Wildlife fleeing and falling into lifeless heaps. The commotion had Cass on her feet, instinctively firing at the intruders. She didn't need to stop to identify her targets, stripes of black and yellow were telling enough of who they were. She took out one, then two, and then five before more fell on her and forced her to the ground. She took out one more, and then another before cold metal met the back of her neck and sent a jolt of electricity into the base of her skull. She cried out once and was silent, glaring up at the white coats standing in front of her.

It would be hours before he finally awoke, his bladder demanding to be emptied. His eyes burned as he forced them open and stumbled his way in the dark towards the toilet. Nothing seemed amiss so far, not until he returned and took care not to step on her. Except there was no “her” to speak of. Panic slowly crawled its way through the cobwebs of his drunken mind until it finally broke free and set his heart racing. “Cass?” he hissed as loudly as he could. No one else knew she stayed here, and he liked to keep it that way. Agents of the long-gone company still weren’t trusted around here, and the last thing he needed was for them to drag her away for something that wasn’t her choice. Hearing no answer, he quickly pulled on his pants and a ratty shirt and half-fell out the window - her favourite point of entry - and called out to her again. She’d just gone outside to get some air, he told himself. But with still no response, he was worried that she’d been taken. Or worse. With just his pistol tucked into the waist of his pants, he scrambled across the rooftops in search for her, his hands cupped around his mouth as he continued to yell for her.
The sun had just begun to creep over the walls of the floating city when she dropped down into an alley, an hour or more before her absence would be noticed.  In any other scenario she would have expressed happiness at way the sun warmed her limbs and turned her hair into gold, but in that moment it warned against detection.  The city would begin to come to life and she would find little safety in washed out shadows.  In that moment the sun meant death, or perhaps something worse.  She wasted little time making her way to the transport that would take her to the planet’s surface, looking back after the hunter for another second before she was gone.
The dirt beneath her feet offered comfort in the expanse it set before her.  Open space to move and fight.  Open space to put between her and her keeper.  She was used to the confines of small rooms more like a kennel than a living space, comfortable with all her sides closed in, but several outings with the hunter had taught her an appreciation of space outdoors.  It was a favorite place of hers she headed out for, predictable perhaps, but it was her choice and no one else’s; setting terms of her own to set the stage for what would come.  And she would face it alone, as she always had.  She had a tight grip on her weapon, swiftly moving away from her Sanctuary.  She would not be labelled a traitor, and it was that thought that kept her moving forward alone.

Late at night th hunt seemed always dead asleep--too many drinks to quiet too many unmentionable sorrows, it was a behavior she'd learned well in all her time at his side. And it was easy enough, with him in this state, to rise unnoticed. She required little preparation, having never gotten the hang of uneequpping her arsenal before she lay down to sleep, everything she could claim ownership of was strapped in some way to her body. But she lingered still in the darkness, a stare cast toward the room where he'd passed out. At one time she had balked at the concept of friendship and struggled to grasp what it was, but now she believed she understood it well enough. It would take asking Mordechai to verify her understanding, but that was a luxury she no longer possessed. In a blink she turned her back on his room and retreated to the window, opening it just enough for her to slip through and scale to the roof. She had mapped out the city in canopies and rooftops, taking routes that didn't rely on streets because she didn't dare set foot on them. Still a pariah in the city she'd spent countless nights in; still the enemy. He would wake alone and find no trace of her, gone as unexpectedly as each bottle of ale on those nights when he got carried away. Just as she'd intended.
