Looking around the mines, even if everyone was busy moving things in and out of conveyor belts, carts and like, they all seemed friendly and chatty. Myla could even see some benches or wooden pallets some bugs used to rest, gather around take lunch breaks but not a lot, as these were the work hours.
âIâm not judging⌠Myla. Nice, Iâll remember it easy. The nameâs Gambit, Iâm your local demolition expert.â
Just as she introduced herself, coming from the level they were at moments ago was a low rumble of explosion that made the ground and walls of the mines tremble for a bit but no one payed it mind. It was normal. Gambit dusted off her shoulder and set her arms on her hips, turning towards Myla once again. They stood on the wall side makeshift stairs or platforms that were open and had nice overlook of upper and lower levels of the area.
âAnyway, Iâm guessing youâre assigned for the picking where available clusters are. I donât blame you for wandering, this place is a maze the more we push through the peak side. Iâll introduce you to the work and rest areas so you donât have to worry. If you get lost again, you can always ask someone again. Most of the folk here are nice.â she took a moment to smile at the pill-bug before continuing her way downstairs. âSo, whereâd you come from?â
âW-Well the king sent m-me here. He s-said Iâd h-help clear debris and pick a cert-tain type of c-c-crystal.â Myla explains, then looking around. All of the mines were so pretty to her! The crystals gleaming with light, constrasting the cold purple stone. And there were so many faces to see too!
As the two reached the lower level, the sounds of bugs working and piking at the crystals became more clear over the machinery and railings. Gambit didnât seem to rush, she had her hands in makeshift pockets of her cloak while walking next to Myla.
âThe king, huhâŚâ she repeated, the matchstick tip lulled up and down from her mouth while Gambit was taking a moment to think. Why would the Pale one himself send someone as young and new to the mines? Surely, the requests for the crystals increased and a lot of bugs from this and other kingdoms are going crazy over their efficiency, especially now that trams are heavily used, thus more and more workers are sent to the peak. Something about it still didnât sit right with her. She shrugged one of her shoulders and sighed.
âAye! Itâs all about picking the right shards. Not all share the same glow.â
Gambit stepped closer to the high, busy cavern hallways of the level. The bugs all seemed to have their own designated spots for mining, working through rocks and shells surrounding the clusters and separating the two. Each had their own baskets for dividing good shards from the bad.Â
As one of the bugs was riding out a glimback with a cart attached to it, Gambit took one of the shards out. âItâs tricky âtill you get use to the variations of shimmer but if you notice a warm glow or even sometimes feel it on your fingertips, you know this is what youâre lookinâ for.â
Gambit offered the shard to Myla. Just like she described, the shard offered a warm tint of purple and shimmered brighter than any of the small, discarded pieces laying randomly on the ground.
